Chapitre 42: Chapter 41: The Hottest Thing Since Sliced Bread

Interior, Earl's Diner, Temperance, South Dakota....

Layla sighed as she ventured back into the diner and proceeded to get herself ready to face the seemingly never ending crowd of people that had come in for a bite to eat no matter the time of day nor the type of weather. Derrick made his way over toward her at the bar with a big grin filed across his face as he had been among the few whom had guessed what she'd been doing on her break once Brick saw his way to venturing outside for a few minutes. The old timers Rooster and Gunther had been the among the remainder whom had guessed what their illustrious leader had been up to when he had gone out telling the group that he needed some air after chugging down the last of his beer and swiping another piece of pie before his exit. Layla rolled her eyes as she took note of Derrick and his smug expression.

She knew she would never get to have any sort of pretend normalcy with him hovering around her.

"What?" she asked in annoyance.

"Nothing." replied Derrick with a smirk. "You know aside from one of your patrons taking to cherry pie quite a bit."

Layla fought the urge to strangle him before her cheeks turned red and focused her attention on wiping down the countertop.

"He's not even here." she said knowing all too well what he'd been getting at. "He had pressing business and thus went to attend to it."

Derrick smirked as he looked over his best friend.

"I'm sure he did." he replied with a sly expression. "I take it that you two got plans for later, I know I would if he was in my bed this morning."

"Shhhh." whispered Layla annoyed with her friend always reminding her of what he walked in on. "I told you not to bring that up."

Derrick smirked.

"Look girly, there's no shame in admitting you have improved taste." replied Derrick. "Everyone knows that if I was in your shoes I'd be shouting it from the rooftops."

"Everyone knows that if it had been you, you'd have been shouting because you already spread your legs for him." replied Layla. "In case you've forgotten, my Dad doesn't even want me spending the night at a house where a boy could be interested in me let alone spending time with full grown man, despite what the laws of consent are here in Temperance."

Derrick sighed.

"Well you got me there." he said calming down at last. "The last thing we need is Mr. Quinn putting a damper on all our fun."

Layla rolled her eyes as she continued wiping down the countertop. It had not been lost on her that her best friend had been near on impossible to deal with when it came to more personal avenues of discussion.

"Older man or not, your biker man is hot." he added once the silence had settled. "He's about the hottest thing to hit Temperance, South Dakota since sliced bread."

Layla shook her head and tossed the dirty rag she'd wiped down the countertop with at Derrick whom had nearly fallen out of his seat in a bid to avoid it.

"Hey that's disgusting!" growled Derrick.

Layla smirked as she watched him react to the mess she left behind.

"Then you would be right at home with it." she countered before heading into the back to finish a round of dishes that had begun to pile up while she and Phoebe were serving.

Derrick narrowed his eyes at her as he watched her go leaving him and his incessant questions behind.

LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

The Backroom, Earl's Diner, Temperance, South Dakota

Phoebe seemed to be floating on a cloud of her own as she moved about dishing on her current relationship with the Howler M.C. biker member known as Arthur "Gearhead"Carrey. Layla could see the reason she'd been charmed, he was after all one of Brick's boys and had a talent for cars and bikes alike.

They chatted up a storm whenever Arthur came into the diner and it was obvious to anyone whom had seen them together where their newfound association would lead.

"It's only a matter of time before Art asks me to be his girlfriend." said Phoebe with a smile. "He's not as big or as bad as most of his brothers, but he sure knows how to make a girl feel special now and again."

"Well, I for one am happy for the two of you." said Layla with a smile.

She had been of the same mind when it came to having someone make her feel special in her life but said nothing about her and Brick to anyone, not even Phoebe for fear of it getting back to her already overprotective father.

"Would you believe he took me out on his bike a few times." continued Phoebe lost in her memories of her evenings with Arthur and not so focused on Layla's budding relationship with Brick Kenneally, whom had been his club president. "I cannot describe to you just how good it felt to go off with him in a carefree moment, the roar of the engine, the speed of his bike, the cute way he looked at me when we were kissing."

"You kissed him?" asked Layla not at all surprised but keeping up appearances none the less.

"Of course." replied Phoebe with a sort of nostalgic smile. "Art can fix just about anything with those wonderful hands of his and to top it off he's a very good kisser."

Layla shook her head as she continued with the dishes as Phoebe went on her stroll down memory lane.

"I'm gonna see him again tonight when our shift ends." she added. "Might just let him get lucky before he heads off into the sunset."

Layla shook her head again at Phoebe's boldness.

"You hardly know him." she said a bit shocked.

"What's that got to do with anything?" asked Phoebe with an arched brow. "He's hot and he treats me nice unlike some assholes I've dated in the past and he's leaving town soon, how long did you expect me to wait for an opportunity like this if I'm not sure if he's ever coming back."

Layla sighed.

She knew he'd be back, because she knew Brick wouldn't stray too far from her, but she didn't want to reveal all of that to Phoebe, not when she hadn't even come to terms with just how much she wanted Brick herself.

"At least use protection." said Layla, ever the more responsible one of the two.

"Now where's the fun in that?" asked Phoebe joking as she noted the horrified look on Layla's young face. "You are a riot, it's too easy to mess with you."

Layla narrowed her eyes and splashed a bit of dirty sink water at Phoebe before the laughing woman ventured back out to continue serving the guests that remained and the new arrivals.

Between Derrick and Phoebe, Layla didn't know which one of her friends had been worse when it came to personal matters. As she turned her attention back to cleaning the remainder of the dishes before her, Layla's mind ventured back to Brick and their plans for the evening before he was set to leave town on business for Sheriff Tillman.
