Luca knew that if he had Sophia close to him while he addressed the reporters, she would be exposed to new sets of eyes and it would put her at risk.

However, he also saw the bigger picture. 

For her safety during that moment, with the cameras pointed toward them, people would know who she was and associate her with him. He was part of the untouchable class. Even if his father's closest men had mistrusted the organization due to the mystery surrounding Vince's death, they wouldn't touch Sophia if they didn't want to start a full-on war.

Only those at the docks knew who killed Vince for certain, but the fact that Luca walked away from the situation and not in handcuffs made suspicions rise and put other members of the family on their toes. 

While there were many people genuinely sad at the funeral, he recognized glances of suspicion and mistrust when he saw them.
