Benedito's eyes looked empty as he looked down to me. Everything about him felt cold and inhospitable. He seemed to have aged in just a minute. I wanted to panic that he would go spiraling but if I acted like he would then I would show him I had no faith that he could handle this. 

"What's going on in that head?" I held his hand to my lips and pressed kisses to his bruised knuckles. Even though at the time I felt like he did not protect me, he had. More than because even though I would never admit it, I had no idea what I was thinking when I attacked Tomas. I felt nearly possessed, maybe it was blind rage or whatever it had been but I just wanted to knock his teeth out.
