Essenla frowned upon hearing these words.

"You think this has something to do with their Mother Tree?" she asked. "What even is it, anyway? I know they worship it or something, but not much else other than that."

"The Mother Tree is there," Gram said. He pointed his spear at a nearby tree, then moved his arm so it pointed at a different one. "And there. And there. It's the forest itself, Grommett. It covers the entire continent."

"Wait, wait, wait," Essenla stammered. "How can one tree be an entire forest?"

"It's simple, isn't it, Grommett?" Gram said, tapping his spear with his thumb. "The Mother Tree is like mushrooms, yes. An entire network of underground roots, with many offshoots. But only one is the source, Grommett. And that source is their God."

"So… all of this comes from one tree?" Essenla muttered, looking around at the village with wide eyes. "I've never heard of such a thing before."

"That must be why the goblins want it dead," Morne mused.
