"Jayde..." Her mother stopped, hands twisting nervously in front of her. "You're not...exactly... Well, you're not human."
Jayde stared at her mother only a moment before she started laughing. "You're joking, right? How am I not human, when you're a human?" She looked around, expecting the others to be laughing with her, but they all stared at her silently, faces blank masks. She turned back to Natashia. "What do you mean?"
"You're a Vampire."

Within her first month at Kushim Uruk Academy, Jayde has a mermaid for her best friends and finds out she has a dragon shifter as her soulmate. She also learns her mother didn't tell her everything when she ends up being chased and kidnapped by guys in ski masks.
