Chapitre 2: Thoughts of a Tree Slayer
Satisfied, Aaron looked after the treetop as it first fell slowly and then faster and faster to the ground following the laws of gravity. Exhausted, the axe slipped from his powerless fingers. All the pent-up rage was suddenly blown away and there was now one tree less in this world.
For centuries the tree had defied wind and weather, survived droughts and icy winters. A natural store of CO2, as experts used to say. A miracle of nature, worth protecting and preserving. Now there was one less of these trees and the earth just kept spinning.
Let's be honest, Aaron had never in his life given even a thought to the protection and preservation of trees. They came at just the right time for him to break down accumulated aggression. He had started some time ago with small thin and young trees and then worked his way forward. Now he had arrived in the king's class, so to speak. The thicker and older they were, the more he relaxed while felling. There was something meditative about it…
Sure, beyond the forest his family and all the other hypocrites still existed, but with each passing day his coming of age approached. In the near future he could move out of his family's hated villa whenever he felt like it - or he could simply continue to delight his loving family with his presence. Wasn't it wrong to run away from his problems like a coward? It put a smile on his lips as he imagined how happy his family would be if he stayed.

I should give her more compliments, otherwise she would get the idea to forget my presence. My brothers and sisters will surely be happy about my existence. And the old dick with them. He is no longer the youngest, eats a lot of unhealthy stuff, smokes and certainly has high blood pressure. The first heart attack comes sooner than later. Or diabetes. Or a stroke. Testicular cancer would also be nice. What a satisfaction it would be if he became infertile and couldn't get it up again. Or he gets lung cancer. Maybe you have to cut off a leg or a foot. Or it's a combination of the disease patterns. Has he caught AIDS after all this unprotected sex? A nice little rumour on the Internet would certainly cheer his grandparents up.
Aaron interrupted his thoughts. He noticed the silence in the forest. The impact of the tree on the forest floor had been much too quiet. The usual cracking and bursting of the branches of the tree crown had failed to take place. His gaze wandered from the tree stump down to the thick trunk and from there towards the treetop. His eyes widened in surprise as the trunk ended in nothingness. Where the treetop was supposed to be, there was only empty forest soil.
Slowly Aaron walked along the thick trunk, in the direction where the crown of the tree should have been. Astonished, he frowned as he reached the end of the trunk after a few dozen meters. It was as if the thick trunk had been cut off neatly. The cutting edge was perfect and showed no blemishes. Interested, Aaron bent down. But when he stretched out his hand to the cutting edge, it disappeared in front of him. Surprised, Aaron pulled his hand back. He saw waves forming in the middle of the air, then looked at his intact hand. Very slowly he stretched out his hand again and watched in awe as it seemingly disappeared into nowhere. The waves spread again, as if on a smooth surface of water.
"Fascinating," Aaron whispered entranced. The treetop hadn't disappeared into nowhere, it was just somewhere else now. "It's like money in the financial crisis - it wasn't destroyed, it just belongs to someone else now." It was now a matter of finding out who or what this other person was in his case. Full of curiosity, Aaron stepped into the unknown.
