The Hermes Family Pet Breeding Base, Emerald City.
...
Seven had made a choice, even though it seemed so foolish and miserable.
He got dressed in his regular leather garment and packed his silver hair to the side, banding it with a wide elastic ring that helped it stay still on the side.
His pale skin was shiny and charming, but the cuts and bruises pasted around caused a pitiful ugliness.
This was due to the countless battles he had fought with various Pets in his family's Breeding Base and ended up not being able to defeat any. Most times, he was the one almost getting killed.
But today was going to be different.
Walking out from the small cottage built in a corner at the base, Seven glanced straight at a huge building by his right.
He was ready for this one last battle.
Since he was 16, the right age when every youngster begins their journey as a Vanquisher, he had been struggling to vanquish his first Vessel.
After the apocalypse, the world had changed, and the era of Vessels and Vanquishers had begun.
Vessels are terrific creatures that have been affected and changed by the devastating effects of the apocalypse. There were still Vessels who came with the apocalypse. However, the strongest humans had made sure they were chased far away from the world or captured and kept in their base...
Vessels are of two stages, Pets and Beasts.
After the great cataclysm, not only the actual world suffered the effect, but the entire universe. New strange races appeared from nowhere and took over the neighboring planets with an ambition to destroy humanity.
The humans were forced into a great war that destroyed half of its population, almost losing their planet to these cruel races. However, it was after the Three Generals discovered that they could kill these terrifying creatures that raided their world and hacked their souls that they managed to win the war.
These creatures became loyal and protective of those who hacked their souls, forgetting the fact that they were made to devour humanity.
After this discovery, humanity defeated every force that came against them, raising them as the strongest race in the universe except for the Voidspawns, who were deadly powerful but showed no interest in the land of humans.
The process of killing and hacking a Vessel's soul was called Vanquishing, while those who had a successful vanquishing became Vanquishers.
In this transforming world, it was everyone's dream to become a Vanquisher. Those who ended up not becoming a Vanquisher are regarded as a piece of trash, just like Seven.
Although he had been failing to vanquish his first Vessel since two years ago, there was still hope.
A hopeless hope.
Seven grabbed his sword, placed at the side of the door, and walked over to the huge building. This was where the Pets were kept and trained.
It was the twentieth time he was going for a vanquishing attempt, but he was having quite a bright face today even though he had failed the other times.
Now this was the simple truth...
Weeks ago, Seven obtained a system after almost dying from the rage of a Metal-skinned Crocodile in this same base.
Since this system appeared, Seven's life seemed to have transformed a little.
[Vanquisher Achievement Task: Vanquish your first Vessel.]
[Vessel Recommendation: Vanquish the Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat.]
This was why he had a bright look on his face, unlike other days.
The foolish and miserable thing was that this Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat was the most neglected Pet in the Hermes Family Pet Breeding Base.
Everyone believed that there was nothing a Cat-type Vessel could offer to a Vanquisher.
They were regardless as "useless".
However, Seven had been deeply convinced by the system to vanquish the Cat... It wasn't as if he would ever succeed in trying to kill other Pets in the base.
"Here we go!" He shouted as he dashed into the pet building.
Families weren't allowed to store Beasts in their bases, so one could only find Pets in a family-owned base except for the First-class families that assembled pets as much as they wanted.
The Pets in the building roared from several angles as he walked in. They were all kept in a large walled compartment, making it impossible for a breakout.
The reason for this harsh approach was the fact that Seven had confronted them many times. Although he didn't win, he had become their greatest enemy.
Seven ignored them and continued walking until he reached the extreme of the building.
In the last walled compartment, a Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat with long whiskers and pointed claws could be seen lying on one side, far gone in a deep sleep.
Seven smiled upon noticing this and quickly brought out a bunch of keys from his garment pocket. Since he was aiming to get his first Vessel, he was given the keys to all compartments in the base.
Gently, he inserted a key and made a silent twist. The steel door opened without a sound, and he walked in slowly and quietly.
After walking close to the Cat, he pulled out the short sword from the rope around his waist, raised his hand, and attempted to stab the Cat in its belly.
However, just as his hands were landing for a strike, the Cat suddenly woke up and reacted.
MEOW!
Although it was too late.
Seven was fast enough to make a successful stab before the Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat could escape.
It died.
At that same moment, the system he obtained sounded in his head.
[You have slain a Starless Vessel, Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat.]
[Do you want to hack its soul and make it your companion?]
"Yes," Seven quickly replied.
[Soul of Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat hacked. Vanquishing in progress...]
[Vanquishing complete.]
[How long do you want this Vessel to be your companion?]
Seven hesitated for a while and replied.
"Forever!"
[Duration of Companionship: Infinite.]
[Vessel rebirth in progress...]
[Vessel rebirth completed.]
[You have gained your first Vessel, Starless Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat Pet.]
[You have gained three Skills, and so have your Vessel.]
[Vanquisher Skills: Telepathy, Share, Refuge.]
[Vessel Skills: Luminous Whiskers, Clawplay, Copycat.]
Seven couldn't help but smile... In the end, he had achieved this two-year-long ambition, even if it was what everyone despised.
"Finally, hehehe!"
[Congratulations, you have become a Vanquisher!]
My new piece! I hope y'all will enjoy it!
Seven was the seventh child of his parent, only older than the last child who was now even a Vanquisher before him.
When he was born, his father made a Fate Detection to see a hint of his future just like other families do, only to be disappointed by a miserable revelation.
His fate was to become weak and useless all through his life and die like a "nobody".
As a strict man who only cared about greatness and value, his father, Eduard Hermes, despised him and decided not to give him a name.
This was why he was called Seven...
Just the seventh born of the family that is.
He was only being recognized as the seventh son of Edouard in the Mid-class Family. All his loved ones looked down on his misery, including his mother who was probably persuaded to see him like someone who wasn't worth her motherly care.
After that day, his life had been all hell. Truthfully, he was way too weak compared to other youngsters while growing up. It was after he was sixteen that everyone came to notice the level of his uselessness, having been unable to vanquish his first Vessel for two years.
Although the weak Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat had always been in the base, Seven had never been intending to vanquish it just because everyone knew that it was a weak Vessel...
Now, after receiving the strange system that called itself the Ultimate Evolution System at the moment of its arrival, he had been convinced to take the Cat as his companion no matter how weak it was.
After the vanquishing, the Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat had been resurrected at that spot, suddenly awaking with a new aura and an entirely different intention around Seven.
This was the way of the strange vanquishing process...
[You have unlocked the Ultimate Evolution System.]
[You have gained 5 Ultima Coins.]
[Do you want to check your stats?]
The system was no longer strange to Seven after understanding a few things about it weeks ago. Apparently, it had promised to make a final opening if he could get his first Vessel... Now, Seven was only eager to see what these stats is.
"Yes, please," he replied curiously.
[Vanquisher Stats:]
[Name: Seven Hermes.]
[Bloodline: Human.]
[Profession: Vanquisher.]
[Rank: Primal-tier.]
[Evo Units: 0.]
[Skills: Telepathy, Share, Refuge.]
[Vanquishing Space: One Vessel Allowance.]
[System Ultima Coins acquired: 5.]
---
[Companion stats:]
[Name: Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat.]
[Bloodline: Vessel.]
[Rank: Starless (Star-0) Pet.]
[Evo Units: 0.]
[Skills: Luminous Whiskers, Clawplay, Copycat.]
[Vanquisher's Companionship Duration: Infinite.]
Seven came to discover that the stats were all about his identity and progression stage.
Staring down at the Cat, he shook his head in slight disappointment and bent. Although it was normal for every Vessel to return to the very bottom of their power after a vanquishing, Seven was only frustrated with the weak aura of the Cat.
Now, the Cat was calm and collected around its new companion, staring right at Seven's eyes. Seven patted its fur and forced a smile...
"Unfortunately, you are mine now... We would have to go to the University of Vanquishers together.
MEOW!
"You bitch, do you really think I'm weak?'
Strangely, what the Cat actually said wasn't what Seven had heard. He had heard a different, understandable statement at that instant, causing his eyes to light up in shock.
"What? What did you just say?!" Seven shrugged.
[You are using your Skill: Telepathy.]
[Skill Description: You can hear and communicate with your Vessel at any time.]
"WHOA! Isn't that crazy?! No one in the entire Terraverde could communicate with their Vessels in the same language! Even the best geniuses could only understand their Vessels through body language!"
Seven was stunned.
He couldn't imagine how he would be the only one to communicate with his Vessel on the entire planet...
After recovering from the shock, he decided to reuse the Skill again... The Skill was automatically activated after all.
"Do you want to go to the best University in Emerald City?"
MEOW!
"Yes, master!"
With broadened eyes, Seven smiled widely after confirming the Skill again.
"Now we should get going then!" Standing on his feet, he took the Golden-horned, Silver-furred Cat on his arms, not minding keeping it in his Vanquishing Space.
With a joyful smile, he walked out of the main base building and approached the small cottage. This was certainly the last moment of his stay here after two years, and he was glad.
Seven wasted no time packing up his belongings before leaving the stinking cottage. The level of his eagerness to return to the family house couldn't be expressed at that moment, but it was still noticeable.
Although he wasn't expecting anything good, he only needed his father to enroll him at the Vanquishers University as soon as possible.
He had wasted too much time just for his first vanquishing and really needed to catch up.
The Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat kept staring at him as he walked through the pathway that led out of the base. Several workers who fed and trained the Pets in the base threw cold glances at him as he walked past their various duty spots, but he didn't mind paying them any attention.
After all, he already knew what was in their mind.
"That useless fellow... He finally vanquished the Cat! HAHAHA!"
"That's what he deserves... That's his match!"
Seven was familiar with the teases and curses of the workers here, so he didn't seem to be shaken by their scoffing.
When he got to the exit of the base, he made no hesitation to go through it and continued walking.
It was quite fortunate that the Hermes Family house wasn't quite far from the base, making it possible for him to journey with his legs.
It wasn't as if he couldn't go home in these two years; it was because his father ordered him not to return until he got his first Vessel.
Although he knew his father would be disappointed seeing him with the well-known weak Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat, it was still a Vessel after all, and his father would have no choice but to accept that fact.
"I hope he wouldn't ask me to find another or else I would go crazy," Seven muttered after those thoughts, glaring.
Soon, shockingly, the Golden-horned, Silver-furred Cat jumped off his arms and charged away.
Seven was on the verge of screaming, thinking that his vanquished Vessel had escaped.
However, it was a different case.
The Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat had just charged at Red Double-tailed Lizard crawling at the side of the pathway.
Before Seven could know it, the Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat unleashed its claws on the small Red Double-tailed Lizard's body and yanked it apart.
Those claws were pretty short, but they were as sharp as the cutting edge of a sword.
[Your Companion, Golden-horned Silver-furred Cat has used its Skill, Clawplay.]
[It has slain a Red Double-tailed Lizard.]
[It had gained 2 Evo Units.]
Seven was rendered speechless after these messages at that moment, looking at his Cat devour the Lizard without hesitation.
[Your Skill "Share" is acting in this circumstance...]
[Your Skill "Share" has been automatically activated.]
[You have successfully shared the Evo Units gained by your Companion, 50-50.]
[You have gained 1 Evo Unit.]
Now this made Seven astonished even more.
