Chapitre 10: Inspection (2)
After everyone entered, Felix took a sharp breath as he tightened his backpack and stepped forth.
But, the moment his right foot entered into the vicinity of the bridge and came in contact with the road, his eyes widened as a terrifying chill went down his spine.
Until now, Felix just stood there still without shifting an inch as if a strong current went through his body making his body tremble. His face lowered, no one could see what expression he was wearing right now.
His hair billowing in the breeze, he slowly closed his eyes to double-check what he felt earlier. And, right after 2 seconds, his eyes opened wide again but there was something unusual about it now.
A glint passed through his eyes as his eyes shone brightly under the moonlight and a small and secret smile spread across his mouth. Even though he couldn't see through his sweatshirt, he could feel that his arms were covered in goosebumps presently. If his old man could see his expression now, then he could tell what Felix was undergoing right now wasn't fear but sheer excitement.
'It's here!' he mumbled in a low voice and strode forward hurriedly.
Alex who was busy examining the bridge when turned back to look for Felix, she found him moving towards them in large strides. She could see the serious expression he had on his face.
"Felix boi, there's something diff..." before she could even finish her words, Felix walked past her without paying any heed to her. He didn't even glance at her which surprised her excessively.
'Felix boi...!?' she muttered as she saw his departing back reflected in the moonlight and the lights of the bridge; the only two sources of light which were present at that point.
Including Alex, everyone else saw how Felix walked past them and continued to move forward in a specific direction. It seemed like he was familiar with this territory but that wasn't the case at all.
This was Felix's first time in a foreign country moreover, in this unknown area. Then, where was he going? Was it to examine the place? Or did he found something here? Everyone had numerous distinct thoughts in their mind yet they continued to watch as he walked away from them, the sound of his footsteps gradually subsiding.
"Rob! Steve! Pause the recording for now..." Nick said aloud in a displeased mood.
Even though they were puzzled by Nick's sudden interruption Rob and Steve still complied with his request and paused their recording.
"Did you see that just now Mike? He didn't even listen to Alex. What is this behavior? And, you Alex? What now? Look at him! He behaved like we were not even present here," he pointed in Felix's direction.
Alex didn't know what transpired, which brought Felix to act like this. Without responding to Nick's objection, she kept staring at Felix who was already far away from them.
She wasn't angry about his behavior at all. What she had in her mind was instead entirely opposite. She was troubled. They had already developed a friendly connection between them. Then, why? Why Felix behaved like that? Was she wrong about him? Or maybe she did something inadvertently which provoked Felix? What was the reason? She kept thinking for a while yet she couldn't come up with an answer.
Celia too furrowed her brows in concern, "We should ask Felix. Maybe he discovered something? Or sensed something?"
Mike nodded as he said in response, "That's right! Nick! Don't jump to conclusions. He's new. Just let him do whatever he wants. He might be examining the bridge. It's not like he's restricting our work or doing anything against the rules."
"What!? Are you guys still taking his side? I can agree with his way of work but what's with that attitude? Correct me if I'm wrong Alex. But, did you find his current behavior likable? Tell me if you aren't upset right now!?" Nick smirked in his mind after saying.
He knew that the only way to handle Felix was to devalue his status first in Alex's eyes. Only then, he can continue with his actual plan to court Celia.
Alex frowned as she heard his grievance, "Don't say it like that. Even though we just met in the morning, I can say that he's not someone who disrespects or hurts the feelings of others. He must be thinking about something that's why he couldn't pay attention to what I was saying."
"Tsk!!", her reply annoyed Nick even more. He wasn't expecting Alex to defend Felix still.
'Looks like this Felix have quite an impact on Alex. Sorry brat! I don't have any problem with you. But, since you came into the team, my Celia has been taking glances at you without you noticing. And, I don't want that to happen. I've been trying to court her for months yet I didn't succeed. I mean eventually, I will. I will never allow my Celia to interact with any other guy like that. She's mine!'
he thought inwardly; a blueprint of his evil plan was already in his mind ready to be executed.
Felix on the other hand came to the middle region of the bridge. He glanced on both the left and right sides of the bridge. Both sides had barriers above the railings and the bridge lights affixed on the poles were grounded under the pathways.
He stepped to the right side and came to the boundary of the bridge. He could discern the height of the bridge as he peeked down.
'It should be around 50 meters I think,' he spoke in a low voice to himself.
Unbeknownst to him, Alex and others were already behind him.
"Now will you explain it honestly or still wanna give excuses?" The sudden voice behind his back made him come out of his trance. He turned to look back only to find everyone else staring at his face intently. The one who spoke was none other than Nick, who stood there while folding his hands, demanding an explanation from him.
"This..." Inarticulate and speechless, Felix didn't know why his teammates were staring at him like that. Just what had he done wrong? Why they are looking at me like that? I don't think I offended anyone. Various thoughts were circulating inside his mind.
"Brother Felix! Alex called you out earlier but you didn't even pay attention to her. You left us all and walked past us as if we were not even there at all," Paul who was holding his SLS device explained the situation when he saw Felix perplexed.
"Ah!" When the sudden realization hit him, he instantly looked at Alex only to find her giving a wry smile.
Guilt. It's been such a long time since he felt this emotion. When was the last time he felt like this? He wondered.
"Everyone! I'm really sorry about my actions earlier. I wasn't paying attention. That was my fault." He immediately apologized honestly.
"It's okay Felix! It happens. Just remember to inform us all before you go anywhere. Our team isn't based on just professional work. We have developed a great friendship among ourselves too. We have gone through so much together, especially Alex, Nick, Paul, and me. Although, Veronica and Celia joined us later. They have become an important part of the team now. You are the junior on our team. This is your first day and first investigation with us. So, what you did earlier might have displeased any one of us. Alex doesn't forgive people easily. I'm surprised she didn't even say a word about your behavior. So, you must cherish your relationship with all of us Felix," Though Mike's words were a bit sharp, they contained truth and also teaching.
Instead of getting annoyed or feeling insulted, Felix immediately nodded in acknowledgment and said,
"I understand leader. I'm really sorry! This won't happen again."
Everyone nodded and smiled except Nick who humphed at his response.
On the other hand, Veronica had her mouth opened slightly as she gazed at Felix. His current behavior even surprised the royal lady.
Unlike other people who would have felt insulted by Mike's lecture, Felix didn't even show any annoyance on his face. He immediately apologized as soon as he came to know about his mistake. And, the best part was that he never asked for any forgiveness. This surprised her excessively. He left the decision to them. Whether they will forgive him or not, it was now their job to decide. Her favourability of Felix suddenly went up by 10.
"Good!" Mike nodded in appreciation.
"Sister Alex!? Can we talk for a moment?" Felix looked at her waiting for her reply.
Nodding her head slowly, Alex and Felix both went further away from all of them to have a private talk.
As they left, Mike smiled and instructed, "Alright!! Paul! Get ready with your SLS. Celia! Switch on your ovilus. You will join Alex with her EVP sessions once she returns. Nick! Place your cameras on both of the pathways for now. We'll place more of them at unusual spots later, once Alex finds them. Also, switch on your thermal camera and keep looking for temperature drops."
He took a breath, glancing at Veronica, and continued, "Veronica! Since we are on an open site. Geopod is not needed I think for now. And, even torches and paramid aren't needed I think. You'll help Felix as he returns.
I'll hold my EMF. We'll first try to get a response with our devices first. Later, we'll move to unusual spots once we find them. If we do get solid pieces of evidence then, we'll proceed further. All clear?"
"Yeah!!!", Everyone exclaimed loudly as if they were all set to investigate.
Meanwhile, Felix and Alex both strode and came to a halt far away from their teammates.
Felix looked at her as he saw the lightings of the bridge reflecting on her face; especially, her enchanting blue eyes which seemed much more saturated than usual. Those eyes were breathtakingly beautiful. Combined with her gorgeous face, she seemed like an ethereal beauty.
Alex turned her head towards the left where Felix stood. They were standing quite close.
"Sister Alex!", He started to speak, "I'm extremely sorry Sister Alex! I didn't mean it like that. I was focused on the site and something just clicked my mind so I went to examine it. I was so concentrated that I didn't even hear what you said. It was all my fault. I'm really very sorry."
"It's okay Felix boi! Fufu~ You have already apologized twice before. Also, I don't think this was such a huge matter. I was just worried. I thought I unknowingly said something to you which made you act like that."
"Nooo! I'm really sorry. It was my fault, so you must accept it. Also..."
"Fine! I accept your apology. Fufu~ What else you want to say?"
Felix looked at her intently as he smiled brightly and then he said something which made Alex blush unduly.
