Chapitre 27: Waiting

Dominic was waiting for Nick to leave the hospital to find out who was selling drugs to him. A reason? None; he just wanted to waste time.

The possibility of things changing since his appearance in this world could be significant; from his existence here, things could vary from one point to another, and just to know how much they changed, he needed to follow Nick when he left the hospital.

By then, doctors and their families were being evacuated to the shelter, and the last trucks with supplies were being carefully brought to the refuge.

The warehouses nearby had been taken over by Dominic, even though some were in use. This was something he didn't care about because, five years from now, no one would be alive, and no one would claim those warehouses.

While Dominic was eating, he was listening to the radio about the strange things happening in the state, and then he knew that today was indeed the day when everything would collapse.

"Everything is getting worse; once they announce the closure of schools, it should be time to start looting." Dominic was very ambitious, knowing that taking all the weapons from armories was the best thing he could do.

The weapons would eventually fall into the hands of inconsiderate people, so as long as he had a better stockpile than others, it would be much better. Of course, every armory owner would be invited to the refuge in exchange for their weapons.

Dominic could be a bad person, but he was never inconsiderate. He also started releasing information online so that smart people could survive what was about to happen.

The rules were basic: stock your warehouses with food and shelter for sixty days. In that time, Dominic could send help to those who really needed it and create a strong refuge where people who could build a better future for everyone could survive.

During this time, he was thinking about how to beat and gain ground on other organizations; he knew that as time went on, those humans he could trust were becoming fewer because they were losing their humanity.

Everyone does horrible things to survive, and that includes him, but many others take advantage of the power they always wanted and commit unjustifiable wrongs. Those kinds of people were the ones he would never accept into his refuge.

"Dominic, two-thirds of the people have accepted and are on their way to the refuge. Where are you?" Tobias was in a control tower not far from the refuge's location; he would handle issuing the latest news and what people should be careful about.

"Are you listening to me? You should be here with your girlfriend right now."

Dominic finished eating and said, "There's still time; don't panic. Besides, it's not like the end will happen overnight."

"The longer you stay out, the more dangerous it will be."

"My golden rooster is on the move; I'll call you later." Dominic ended the call, and his brother-in-law watched Nick leave the hospital. A few hours had passed, so as soon as he finished eating, he left and put on his motorcycle helmet to follow Nick.

Starting his motorcycle, he made sure to follow Nick at a safe distance of at least two hundred meters. He lost him at times, but other times he knew where he was. Truth be told, he was somewhat smart; what would have happened if he had continued in the hospital?

Ambulances could now be heard everywhere; there was chaos with every accidental death that happened, and the undead were appearing in broad daylight.

The police were confused, civilians were confused, and that would generate uncontrollable chaos. How could they be blamed? Seeing a police officer empty the magazine into an African American would generate a lot of outrage; no one would understand why he does it, and that would spiral out of control in a few hours.

Taking advantage of the time he was killing, Dominic took out his phone and called Emma. "Are you at home?"

"Yes, I stayed at home as you mentioned; is it happening?" Emma asked with a slightly subdued voice, something Dominic noticed.

"What's wrong with you?"

"My mother has a fever; I don't know if we can move her to that state." Emma wouldn't move her mother in that condition.

Dominic thought about it and said, "In a few hours, I'm coming to see you. If everything is okay, a helicopter can pick us up on the roof of your building."

"Is that possible?"

"Of course, you have nothing to worry about. Leave this to me, and I'll sort it out." Said Dominic before hanging up the call and watching Nick leave with his friend from the cafeteria.

Without thinking too much, he made sure to follow them without being obvious. If things continued to happen as in the original story, Dominic would pull some strings to take advantage of other situations.
