An hour later, Jack had finished his second cup of coffee, the Morning Newscrossword puzzle, and the cryptogram—in pen, and he was proud of that—and he glanced over the list he’d made.

The faucet in the kitchen sink was leaking, the window in the back door needed to be re-caulked, and he’d noticed one of the slats in the backyard fence needed to be replaced. Although Tom didn’t do repairs, the people who had owned the house before he bought it had a workbench set up in a corner of the garage, and Tom had left it there. Jack decided to see what was available to him.

As it turned out, the faucet just needed a new seat washer, and Jack took care of the leak immediately. Unfortunately, the caulk in the tube was dried out, and there were no spare slats for the fence.

This would entail a trip to Home Depot. He checked his watch. The big box store had been open for a couple of hours already.
