The days dragged on as Cole waited for news from Helen. He kept his routine the same, training in the gym, fighting in the underground ring, and keeping his head down when the guards were around. But every day, the hope that had started to grow inside him grew stronger.
Lina's visits became more frequent, and each time, she brought news of Helen's progress. It wasn't much—just updates about legal filings and potential court dates—but it was enough to keep Cole going.
One evening, as Cole sat in his cell, staring at the worn concrete walls, a guard appeared at his door.
"Visitor," the guard grunted.
Cole's heart skipped a beat. It wasn't time for one of Lina's usual visits, which meant it had to be Helen.
As he walked down the familiar hallway to the visitation room, his mind raced with possibilities. Had she found a way out? Was this finally it?
When he stepped into the room, there she was—Helen, sitting on the other side of the glass, her sharp eyes watching him carefully. She looked tired, but there was a determined set to her jaw that made Cole's heart race.
Cole picked up the phone, pressing it to his ear. "What's going on?"
Helen leaned forward, her voice steady. "I've got good news, Cole. We've found a way."
Cole's breath caught in his throat. "A way out?"
Helen nodded, her eyes filled with determination. "It's not going to be easy, and it's not guaranteed, but there's a loophole we can use. We're going to petition for early release."
Cole's heart pounded in his chest. Early release. The words sounded too good to be true.
"What's the catch?" Cole asked, his voice cautious.
Helen sighed, glancing down at the papers in front of her. "The catch is that you need to keep your nose clean. No more underground fights. No more trouble with the guards. If you get into any more trouble, they'll use it against you, and this will all fall apart."
Cole clenched his fists, the weight of her words settling over him. He had come so far, survived so much, and now, freedom was within his grasp. But it wouldn't come without sacrifice.
"I can do that," Cole said, his voice steady.
Helen gave him a small smile. "I know you can. Just hang in there a little longer. We'll get you out."
Cole nodded, his mind racing. The path to freedom was clear now, but it wouldn't be easy. He would have to let go of the underground fights, let go of the part of him that had thrived in this place. But for Lina, for Ty, for Zack—for his future—it was a price he was willing to pay.
