Chapitre 2: Fateful night

Creaking, creaking, creaking.

An unpleasant sound rattles my brain.

I'm sleepy. I want to sleep.

My instincts whisper for me to just stay in bed, but the loud creaking sound won't allow it.

"...Ugh, what now? It's so noisy. Couldn't you let me sleep a little longer..."

I, Rin Tohsaka, am already not a morning person.

And yet, yesterday... no, until today, I was deciphering my late father's will from ten years ago. I've used up all my physical and mental strength, exhausted.

"Just a little longer..."

While being shaken by the sound of the alarm clock, I remember the time. The usual time I set is 6:30. Considering the start time of school, I still have some time to sleep even if I'm a bit late.

Yes, let's sleep a little longer. Anticipating this, I set the alarm clock thirty minutes later yesterday.

...Huh. Isn't something strange about this?

"Wait, it's not already 7 o'clock...!"

I scold my sluggish mind, hastily getting up from the bed.

To be honest, even if it's already 7 o'clock, I still have time, but living on the edge goes against the family motto.

No matter the situation, always be elegant with composure...

It's quite an eccentric family motto, but I like it.

A life without composure, well, it's, how should I put it, uncool. I would prefer if our household had more financial composure, though...

...It's not something to brag about, but my family is a lineage of magi who inherit "Magecraft."

The family lineage itself is ancient, naturally possessing wealth. However, Magecraft is something that consumes money excessively... That's why I'm constantly struggling with financial matters.

Magecraft, as the name suggests, involves reciting spells and using dubious incense to perform strange phenomena.

Saying it like that makes it sound fantastical and mystical, but in reality, it's not so delightful. There are various constraints, and there's a constant danger to life. It's out of the question to go around proclaiming, "I'm a magus!"

Moreover, no matter how amazing the Magecraft may be, with enough time and technology, it can be replaced by other means. For example, creating fire or flying in the sky may seem impressive, but we can accomplish the same things much more easily without resorting to complicated Magecraft. With lighters or airplanes, there's no need to bother with intricate Magecraft.

In other words, being a magus is an unprofitable occupation. Even if you put in a lot of effort into using Magecraft, modern science and technology can easily replicate the same phenomena. So why do we continue researching things that can't be accepted by society?

Changing the topic, at the apex of the dimension theory lies something called the "Root," which exists beyond this world.

The starting point of an event where everything in this world is recorded and all knowledge is encompassed. Reaching that is the common goal of all magi.

It may sound suspicious, but the existence of "Magi" itself paradoxically proves the existence of the "Root."

And as for "Magic"... it is something different from Magecraft.

Literal magic. An impossible-to-reproduce "miracle" that no matter how much effort is put into it, it cannot be achieved by the power of civilization of that era. That is magic, and those who use it are called magicians.

What springs forth from the Root is magic, and being able to use magic is synonymous with reaching the Root.

There are only a handful of magicians in human history, but they certainly exist. And it is the ultimate goal of us magi to strive towards that.

While pondering about these things, I wash my face, finish breakfast, and grab my bag. As I'm about to leave for school, I suddenly remember last night.

The Tohsaka magi clan excels in Jewel Magecraft.

Naturally, the concept of magical energy is difficult to store. However, jewels have a relatively easy nature to store magical energy. And with a stock of magical energy, various applications can be made. Well, the drawback is that it costs a bit too much...

Putting that aside, last night I stumbled upon something incredible. A hundred-year-old jewel that I obtained by deciphering my father's will.

Tools used for Magecraft are better the more years have passed. A hundred-year-old jewel that also stores a large amount of magical energy can certainly be called a treasure.

Right now, I have a jewel filled with ten years' worth of magical energy. There are other jewels as well, but compared to this one, they're nothing more than mere stones.

...And before I knew it, it has become dangerously late.

I put away the jewel I was fiddling with, grab my bag. If I don't go to school soon, it might be a problem.

***

Amidst the radiant setting sun, I open the front door and enter the familiar living room.

Nothing has really changed, and I've finished another peaceful day of school life. A turbulent student life only exists in novels or anime; it doesn't really happen in reality. In fact, school life is rather dull.

...I wonder if I feel that way because I'm the one who's changed.

At school, I, to put it modestly, behave as a perfect honor student.

Disgracing the name of the Tohsaka family is out of the question, and above all, when I do something, I strive to be the best. That's why I don't cut corners in my studies either.

But that's all.

Even if I ask for an evaluation of me at school, I wouldn't receive an answer beyond "honor student." I have some friends, but we only hang out on holidays. It's not that I dislike others, but I try to interact with them as little as possible.

Magi should be secretive existences.

There are various reasons, but basically, Magecraft is something that should not be exposed to the outside world. Naturally, we must avoid letting the general public know about the existence of Magecraft.

And once an ordinary person knows about the existence of Magecraft, erasing their memories becomes the norm.

Naturally, I don't want to do such a thing.

If my relationship with certain individuals becomes deeper, there's a chance that my identity as a magus might be exposed. To prevent that from happening, I live my daily life without causing any disturbances.

"...Hmm."

That's what greeted me, the blinking light of the answering machine.

It's rare for our house to receive phone calls... well, I can pretty much guess what it's about. Sighing, I press the playback button, and soon a man's voice begins to play.

"It's me. I assume you understand, but your deadline is tomorrow, Rin. We can't afford for you to take your time. There are only two remaining seats. You must gather your Master as soon as possible."

Yes, such an uninteresting line. It's definitely Kirei.

Kirei Kotomine.

He is my father, Tokiomi Tohsaka's, disciple and my senior. A man with a rather rare background, being both a priest serving God and a magus... but let's leave that aside for now.

"If you plan to forfeit your rights as a Master, contact me today. It'll take time to dispatch a substitute magus."

As annoying as he is, I think his voice is good.

A deep, resonating voice. When I hear it again, it truly sounds like that of a clergyman... Only his voice, though.

"You have already displayed the signs of a Command Spell. Hurry up and summon a Servant and unlock the Command Spells."

"Of course, if you don't plan on participating in the Holy Grail War, that's a different story. If you value your life, it would be best to run to the church as soon as possible."

And with that, the answering machine ends.

Hmph. It's probably just a reminder to either prepare for battle or retire. Either way, it doesn't matter to him... but as for me, I've long been prepared to fight. Now, all that's left is to make final preparations...

"The Holy Grail War, huh..."

As I uttered those weighty words, I gently closed my eyelids.

It was a story from ten years ago.

"Well then, I'll be going. You understand what to do afterwards, right?"

Tall stature, chiseled features. While thinking about something important, that person was gently patting my head.

No, it wasn't really a pat... It was more like grabbing and ruffling my head.

Well, that's how it should be. After all, that person probably patted my head for the first time.

With an unfamiliar touch, that person pondered for a moment while patting me, then quickly started talking.

About the family heirloom.

About the Grandfather.

About the management of the basement.

Seeing that person talking about things they hadn't told me until now, I understood.

It is said that humans behave differently when facing death. That's why... I probably won't be able to see that person again.

It was a war.

Not a war between nations, but a merciless battle royale where seven magi target each other.

And that person was one of them.

That person, too, stood in a position where they could kill and be killed. Even a young me understood that much.

"Rin, the Holy Grail will appear eventually. Obtaining it is the duty of the Tohsaka family and above all... if you aspire to be a magus, it is a path you cannot avoid."

And finally, gently patting my head, that person left.

Tohsaka Tokiomi.

My father, my teacher, and the Master of the Holy Grail War. That was his final appearance.

I loved that person. As a father and as a magus, that person was truly exceptional.

They loved me and guided me with strictness.

That's why I had decided long ago. With the last words that person left me, I would choose my own path.

"I see. It's starting... "

When I opened my eyes, what I saw was not my father's figure. Only the sound of a clock echoed in the quiet room.

The Holy Grail War.

A deadly battle among seven magi over the Holy Grail, which grants any wish.

If such a convenient thing existed, it would be great if everyone could use it together!... That thought did cross my mind, but the world doesn't work that smoothly. Only one person can obtain the Holy Grail. The ownership is given to only one individual, and the Holy Grail can grant only one wish.

However, summoning the Holy Grail requires seven magi. Despite that, if only one wish can be granted... it was only a matter of time before the seven magi started killing each other.

That is the beginning of the Holy Grail War.

The magi who participate in the Holy Grail War are called "Masters."

The proof of a Master is twofold.

Summoning a familiar, called a "Servant," and making it obey.

Also, bearing three Command Spells to control the Servant.

The Master cooperates with the summoned Servant and kills other magi and Servants until they are the last one standing.

These rules are crucial. No matter how skilled one is as a magus, they cannot qualify to participate in the Holy Grail War without having a Servant.

When you hear "familiar," you might think of owls or rats, small animals like that. However, the familiars in the Holy Grail War are on a different level. The method of summoning and controlling them is on a completely different dimension.

They are called Heroic Spirits.

Heroic Spirits are essentially the souls of heroes.

Kings who ruled great nations, heroes recorded in history textbooks, renowned legends... These superhumans, who left their names in history, are summoned to the Throne of Heroes after death.

Elevated to the rank of Heroic Spirits, they become a certain type of spiritual entity and become guardians of humanity. Regardless of whether they are mythological or historical, as long as people believe in them, they become Heroic Spirits. Human beliefs shape them into heroes. And the Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City brings forth these extraordinary beings as familiars.

They are existences that transcend humans. Even if someone is a mage, it is impossible to control such beings.

However, the Holy Grail has the ability to summon and make them familiars. Just this fact alone tells you how extraordinary the Holy Grail in Fuyuki City is. Reviving heroes from various eras and regions and having them compete to determine the strongest through battles. That is the Holy Grail War in Fuyuki City.

...And here, the summoning becomes a problem.

Heroic Spirits exist outside of the world by nature. Trying to bring them into the mortal realm naturally requires adequate preparations. Hence, the Holy Grail acts as a vessel that allows them to take shape, establishing classes that are suitable for them and summoning the compatible Heroic Spirits.

There are seven predefined classes:

- Knight of the Sword, Saber.

- Knight of the Lance, Lancer.

- Knight of the Bow, Archer.

- Rider, the mounted warrior.

- Caster, the magus.

- Assassin, the assassin.

- Berserker, the mad warrior.

The summoned Heroic Spirit is allocated to one of these seven classes and materializes as a Servant. However, to summon a Servant, an item connected to that person is required.

In other words, a sword, shield, clothing, or armor that person owned or wore. Such items become necessary.

Actually, even without such relics, it is not impossible to summon a Servant. However, in that case, it is uncertain which Heroic Spirit will be summoned.

It might be an incredibly famous great hero, or it might be a minor and weak individual. In short, it's a gamble. In a battle where lives are at stake, I don't want to take such a chance.

"Hahaha... Hahahaha..."

Already, I can summon a Servant. The Tohsaka residence is a first-class spiritual ground. It doesn't fall behind other magi. The only issue was obtaining the item connected to the Servant...

"...A fragment of the Round Table. That is the true identity of this wood chip."

Originating from the Arthurian legend of England, this wood chip is none other than a fragment of the Round Table proposed by King Arthur.

Heroic Spirits, the more famous they are, the stronger they become. And in terms of Arthurian legends and the knights of the Round Table, there are very few people in the world who are unaware of their names.

Leading the pack is King Arthur himself, followed by "Knight of the Lake" Lancelot, "Knight of the Sun" Gawain, and "Knight of Rebellion" Mordred...

Each and every one of them is a hero who has engraved their legend in history. The relics associated with these heroes can be considered the greatest treasures in this Holy Grail War.

After all, by using this as a catalyst to summon a Servant, there is no chance of failure, no matter who is summoned. Being able to summon a powerful Servant alone provides a tremendous advantage.

In the Holy Grail War ten years ago, it seems that my father summoned a Servant using a different relic. According to his will, this item was secured as a backup at that time.

Considering that this is just a backup, I can't help but wonder what kind of relic was used to summon the main Servant... But for now, let's just be glad and rejoice.

With the deciphered will from last night, I obtained this fragment and the crimson gem that will become my trump card. With these in hand, everything is in order. Tonight, I will summon a Servant in perfect condition and acquire the strongest Saber...!

***

Late at night.

For me, the most compatible time is exactly 2 am. I made preparations to coincide with that time.

Glancing at the clock, I saw that the hour hand was about to reach three.

Actually, this morning, I was supposed to leave the house at 7:30, but when I arrived at school, it was already past 7.

That doesn't add up... I doubted it and checked the clock after returning home, and sure enough, the time was off. Moreover, it wasn't just one clock that was off. As if planned, every clock in the house was perfectly an hour ahead.

I don't know what's going on, but it would take too much time to fix all the clocks in the house, so for now, I decided to leave them as they are. Perhaps Father did something.

If I hadn't noticed this... it's terrifying to think about. In that case, I would have started the ritual one hour late... Ugh, let's not dwell on it.

Now... it's about time.

Kirei said, "There are two seats left." That means the other five magi must have prepared as well. As a Tohsaka magus, I can't afford to fall behind any further.

With cautious movements, I inscribe the circle on the basement floor.

The norm is to draw the magic circle with blood, but this time, I'm using dissolved gemstones. The amount of magical energy they provide is incomparable to blood. After all, I'm using half of the gemstones I've been accumulating. Summoning a Servant is a significant challenge; I can't afford to fail under any circumstances. So, there's no holding back.

"Silver and iron as the base. Stone and the contract's grand duke as the cornerstone. The great master Schwineaug as the ancestor. Walls for the descending winds. Close the four gates, and emerge from the crown. The trident path leading to the kingdom shall circulate."

I concentrate.

When you hear "summoning a Heroic Spirit," you imagine an immense ceremony. However, it is the Holy Grail's job to bring them forth. We Masters only need to supply the magical energy to anchor the Servants to the physical world. In reality, the Holy Grail handles all the troublesome work, so as long as I succeed in summoning, it's all good.

However, failure in this ritual is not allowed. If, by any chance, I cannot summon a Servant, I will be defeated right then and there.

"Close your eyes. Close your eyes. Close your eyes. Close your eyes. Close your eyes. Each time repeating five times. Merely disrupting the fulfilled moment."

Just for a moment, I glance at the clock. The timing is perfect. Now, it's time for the real thing!

"Begin, Set."

I flip the switch inside me, unseen. Instantly, my magic circuit activates.

Through the activated magic circuit, magic energy spreads throughout my entire body. This massive and pure magical energy contained in the atmosphere. I convert it and give it a different form.

This is the common process for all magecraft. The dull pain running through my body is the price to pay for using magecraft. This dull pain accompanies me eternally as the cost of achieving mysteries that cannot be accomplished by humans.

Nevertheless, I don't loosen my focus. I endure the pain, restrain myself, and continue weaving the magical energy because there lies the path I seek.

"─―Announce."

Preparations are complete.

The magical energy is perfect.

I won't allow any failures.

I pour the converted magical energy into the summoning circle, moving my body solely for the purpose of calling them.

"Your existence is under my command, and my fate lies in your sword. Follow the Holy Grail's proximity, respond to this intent, to this logic."

The air changes.

The massive magical energy swirls, exuding a force even though it cannot be seen.

I have already closed my eyes. If I were to open them in this state, it could lead to blindness.

There's no turning back now. All that's left is to press on until the end.

"Swear here. I am the embodiment of all the good in the eternal world, and I lay the path for all the evil in the eternal world. Come forth from the ring of restraint, O guardian of the balance─!"

They've arrived!

Alright, perfect! I've undoubtedly drawn the strongest card...!

It's an overwhelming sensation, a perfectly executed blow! Oh, I wonder who has come...!?

With 70% anticipation and 30% unease, I open my eyes.

And there, before me──

"─―Let me ask. Are you my Master?"

A bell-like voice of a young girl.

Emerald eyes, resembling precious gems, quietly gaze at me.

Without any doubt, at a single glance, I know. This is the card I desired. The most exceptional Heroic Spirit among Servants, the Hero of the Sword.

Her armor of shining silver radiates even in this underground where light doesn't reach. Her slightly fluttering golden hair seems as if it would scatter if touched.

I can't help but be dumbfounded by her beautiful appearance.

But, I can't help it. That girl is beautiful and a little frustratingly cute──

***

──To cut to the chase. The Servant I summoned was undoubtedly the best card.

King Arthur.

Once ruled as the king of Britain, a great hero who triumphed in numerous battles and repelled the invasion of the Saxons.

In the Middle Ages, he was revered as one of the Nine Worthies, and his name as the Knight-King remains in various parts of the world to this day.

The holy sword held in his hand can cleave anything, and the scabbard of the holy sword is said to possess the power of eternal youth.

To be able to summon such an exceptional hero, it should be a moment to jump up and rejoice... but there is one significant problem.

The Servant who claimed to be King Arthur was a girl who looked not much younger than me.

I want to shout, 'What's going on?' But first, I need to calmly check my own body.

...Yes, a portion of my magical energy is undoubtedly flowing to the girl in front of me. She is indeed my Servant──Saber.

"──"

To confirm the contract, I look down at my right hand. Now that I have formed a contract with the Servant, a mysterious symbol is engraved on my right hand.

This is the Command Seal.

It serves as proof of the contract with the Servant and functions as a three-stroke chain to control them.

The Command Seal contains immense magical energy and allows me to issue up to three absolute commands to my Servant. Even if the command is an absurd one like "kill yourself," the Servant cannot defy it.

However, these chains are not merely meant to bind the Servant. Depending on the situation, they can also become powerful weapons to support them. If I order, "Come to me," they can instantly move near me, even if they were far away. Likewise, if I command them to "escape from that enemy right now," it opens up the possibility of escaping even from a disadvantageous situation.

"──Master."

With that voice, I snap back to my senses.

I shake my head vigorously and look straight ahead. Her jade-colored eyes are quietly fixed on me.

Her gaze seems to ask something, making me tilt my head in confusion.

...Ah, come to think of it, I forgot something important.

"Sorry, I haven't introduced myself yet. ...I'm Rin Tohsaka. You can call me whatever you like, Saber."

"In that case, Rin. Yes, I personally prefer that pronunciation."

Saber murmurs my name with a slightly different accent.

But strangely, it doesn't feel unpleasant at all. Her voice is so beautiful that just being called by my name puts me at ease.

...Yes. I'm truly glad I summoned this girl.

I was surprised when a girl appeared after the summoning ritual, but Saber is a proper hero. Honestly, for now, there's no room for complaints. It's a bit of an issue that she can't materialize from her spirit form, but even considering that, it's more than worth it.

Now that I think about it, having a burly guy clinging to me all the time is not my thing. Besides, I'm not into muscle-bound heroes.

As I nod to myself, Saber opens her mouth again.

"Rin. Now that I have been summoned like this, I am your Servant. However, I cannot entrust my sword to you without knowing your wishes. Please tell me your wish, entrusted to the Holy Grail."

...Ah, I see.

When obtaining the Holy Grail, the wishes of the Master are also relevant to the Servant. No matter how incredible the power of the Holy Grail may be, it's challenging to bring along an unenthusiastic hero. All the Servants summoned into the mortal realm have some kind of wish.

Throughout history, heroic tales often have tragic endings. There is no shortage of anecdotes where they couldn't fulfill their goals due to betrayal or misfortune.

The Holy Grail War offers them another chance to have their wishes granted. So, it's only natural that they would be enticed by its fascinating conditions.

By asking me this question, it means that Saber also has a wish she wants to entrust to the Holy Grail. After all, the legend of King Arthur is one of those tales with a tragic ending.

The Master and the Servant share a common purpose of having their wishes granted. So, it's only natural that as the Master, I──

"A wish? I don't have one. Such a thing."

"...Huh?"

Saber is taken aback, her expression showing surprise.

After a short pause, the bewildered girl begins to speak in rapid succession.

"T-That can't be true. The Holy Grail is an all-powerful cup that grants wishes. As the Master, you should have a wish to entrust to the Holy Grail."

"That's why I don't have one. You see, Saber? If the Holy Grail is supposed to be all-powerful, it can grant any wish. But having wishes granted without any effort on my part isn't interesting."

"...Then, for what reason are you fighting?"

"That's obvious. To win. And while I'm at it, I'll take whatever I can get. I don't know what this Holy Grail thing is, but it's not something I'd be troubled by."

Saber blinks her beautiful eyes. But that is just a momentary reaction──she quietly smiles.

"...I surrender, Rin. You are indeed worthy to be my Master."

Saber's calm words mesmerize me unintentionally.

...Wait, why have I been absentmindedly staring like this since earlier?

After absentmindedly gazing at Saber's face, I finally realize the cause. Just a while ago, I completed an unimaginable ritual of summoning a Servant. My magical energy has been greatly depleted, and it's no wonder I'm tired.

Moreover, I haven't been getting proper sleep for the past few days. In normal circumstances, I might have collapsed. The most critical task is done for now. So, maybe I can take a rest for a while.

"Sorry, I seem to be tired. You can go ahead and rest, Saber."

"In that case, I will take over. ──Rest assured, Master. As long as I'm here, no enemy Servant will be able to harm you."

Saber declares with a resolute tone. Her expression brims with unwavering confidence.

There is no falsehood in her words. No matter what Servant appears, they won't be a match for my Saber.

She may look like a lovely girl, but the magical power she possesses is on a different scale. After all, she is the Servant of me, Rin Tohsaka. Not to brag, but I don't feel like losing to just any other mage. Yes, I can sleep peacefully tonight.

"Good night, Saber."

"Yes. Good night, Rin."

With a slight nod, I turn on my heels and leave the basement, heading towards my room on the second floor.

Whether it's due to completing the once-in-a-lifetime ritual or sending magical energy to the Servant, drowsiness overwhelms me. Ah, it seems like I'll be able to sleep soundly tonight──.

***

The day after summoning the Servant, I spent the entire day showing them around the city.

While teaching Saber about the town's appearance and geography, I had planned to draw out other Masters and Servants as well... However, it seems that luck doesn't work that way in this world.

Well, it's not like the day was spent in vain, so I should consider it a good thing in that regard. There were some gains to be had.

...And so, after a good night's sleep, Saber and I faced each other in the living room.

"So, I'm thinking of going to school."

"...Huh?"

Saber widened her eyes at my declaration.

Seeing her surprised expression, I thought that perhaps my explanation was lacking, so I added more words.

"Oh, maybe you don't know about schools? Um, schools are..."

"No, I have knowledge of that information. Servants are bestowed with knowledge of the modern world from the Holy Grail."

Oh, right. That's true.

Heroic Spirits are essentially individuals who lived in ancient times. While there may be some who are future Heroic Spirits, most of them are figures from myths and legends. In other words, they were people who existed in ancient times.

But those people who lived in such eras suddenly appearing in the present wouldn't be able to adapt easily. That's why the Holy Grail grants Servants knowledge, indoctrinating them with the common sense of this era to prevent any inconveniences.

"My concern isn't about that. Rin, as your Master, it is my duty to be cautious of enemy attacks. Going to school is not an appropriate place to confront enemies."

"Is that so? Well, Saber? I'm in the midst of the Holy Grail War, but I don't intend to change my everyday life. Besides, school is a public facility. Do you think anyone would have the courage to attack me in front of hundreds of students?"

"...It's possible, as a possibility."

Was it just my imagination? With a somewhat somber expression, Saber murmured those words.

"Rin, those who become Masters are not necessarily noble individuals like you. Some may not hesitate to involve others."

"...I see."

Yeah, that's true.

If they didn't care about ordinary people, they could stage a gas leak accident, make it look like an accident due to the deterioration of the school building, or even fabricate a terrorist bomb attack. As long as they disregard ordinary people, they could easily target me within the school.

Basically, when it comes to magus battles, as long as the principle of "Mystic Concealment" is upheld, anything goes without rules. It can't be said that there aren't those who would employ such methods.

"And besides... it's a hypothetical situation. If there were enemies within the school, I wouldn't be able to protect you as a Master. I cannot manifest as a spirit and I lack the skill to block my presence, so it would be difficult for me to enter the school premises."

Hmm... Saber's words might be right. However, the likelihood of a Master hiding within the school is close to zero.

The Tohsaka family is a special lineage that manages the entire Fuyuki City area. Naturally, we have confirmed the other magus families in the city as well, but besides the Tohsakas, there is only one other family involved in magecraft. That family has already declined, and the current successor has no aptitude as a magus. There's no way they could become a Master in the Holy Grail War.

Therefore, the majority of magi participating in this Holy Grail War would come from outside Fuyuki City. I can't imagine that those people would have the luxury to investigate the school one by one.

As long as Saber stays near the school while I'm there, everything should be fine. If she's nearby, she can come to my aid if something happens to me, and conversely, my Saber isn't weak enough to be easily defeated if she were to be attacked.

Moreover, there are advantages to me and Saber acting separately. For example, information. By splitting up, we can gather more information, and from the perspective of enemy Masters and Servants, even if they discover one of us, they won't have information on the other.

When I explained this to Saber, she returned a difficult expression.

"If that's what you say, Rin, then I will obey... but please be careful, Master. In battle, you never know what might happen."

Saber stared at me with serious eyes. Her words carried a sense of certainty.

...King Arthur. The king of knights who once raced across battlefields and triumphed in twelve battles. With the real person himself saying it, I should follow the advice.

"Understood. Thank you, Saber... Well, it's about time to go. While I'm at school, please follow the plan as we discussed."

"Yes. Take care, Rin."

With Saber's farewell, I headed towards the entrance.

***

Another day comes to an end.

The sun had long set, and the city was covered in a quiet darkness.

It was already 8 PM at night. The only ones remaining at the school were me and... the armored girl by my side.

Looking down at the foreign object in front of me, I quietly spoke.

"Saber, is that what you guys are?"

Saber, on the other hand, remained silent. That silence was a more eloquent answer than anything.

...A bounded field.

It is a form of magic that has existed since ancient times and fundamentally serves to protect the practitioner. It affects a certain area and can have various effects, from concealing people's presence within the range to imposing restraints on intruders. Among them, what I saw before me was the highest level.

The majestically engraved seals can only be seen by magi. The inscribed characters are shapes I have never seen or heard of before.

Something unknown to my knowledge as a magus. However, I can understand that this is a boundary field created with an exceptional level of skill. What's more troublesome is that... the nature of this bounded field is "offensive."

Presumably, it is a boundary field that interferes with life activities. It seems to be unfinished yet, but if this is completed, ordinary people wouldn't stand a chance.

However, for magi, this is mostly useless. Boundaries primarily act on the terrain and location, making it difficult to affect a magus who is channeling magical energy through their own body.

Which means... the target of this boundary field is not the Master or the Servant. It's the entire school... in other words, the students attending this school itself.

In the morning, I detected the presence of something unusual and waited until nightfall to join Saber and investigate this bounded field.

Here on the rooftop, there are seven so-called curse marks, the starting point of the bounded field. Naturally, I managed to disable all of them... or so I'd like to say, but I can't handle this anymore. I can hinder the activation, but I can't remove the curse marks themselves.

Saber remained silent, her lips sealed. However, her stern expression indicated her anger.

And that's only natural. Any sane person wouldn't tolerate something like this. Once activated, this bounded field will exterminate all individuals within it.

It doesn't simply drain magical energy or restrict movement. It's a blood boundary called Blood Fort that steals the soul itself.

But even if they were to obtain souls, there are no magi capable of handling them. The concept of the soul is difficult to handle, and only one person in history has been confirmed to have accomplished that.

To go to such lengths to collect something that has no use for both ordinary people and magi...

"What the hell? Are you going to erase me? How wasteful."

In response to that voice, my body moved instinctively.

I turned around.

The presence was above me, on top of the water tower. A young man was looking down at me from there.

He was clad in blue armor.

His smirked expression revealed a roughness yet had a sense of familiarity.

His face was smiling, but his gaze directed at me was sharp. The killing intent contained within indicated that this man was a seasoned warrior.

But above all else, his overwhelming presence was telling me that he was not human!

"Well, it doesn't really matter to me. I have business with your sister over there."

Standing next to me, Saber flinched. Business with Saber... which means this guy is...!

"A Servant...!"

"Exactly. So, can I assume that you, Miss, are my enemy?"

My spine froze.

Nonchalantly, as if having a casual conversation, he uttered those words. But the meaning behind those words was more terrifying than anything else.

It was like a snake raising its head. Such a dangerous sensation.

...This is bad. I don't even know what's bad about it. But my instincts are sounding the alarm, warning me that fighting here is absolutely dangerous!

"Well... impressive. You have quite the courage for your age. This might actually be enjoyable."

The man's arm rose quietly.

In that instant...

The next moment, his hand that had been empty before... a spear, eerie like blood, appeared.

"First──!"

I leaped to the side.

My body moved before I could even think. I just had to escape from this rooftop as quickly as possible!

"──!"

A high-pitched sound resounded.

The thing that had darted towards me in the blink of an eye was mercilessly aiming for me. But just before that, the silver-haired girl tackled me to the ground.

"You... you're quite skilled, sister...!"

The blue whirlwind turned around.

There was no time to confirm, but it seems Saber managed to block his attack.

"Please step back, Master. I'll handle this Servant!"

"Sorry, leave it to me for a moment...!"

I turned on my heel at those reassuring words and activated the magical crest on my left arm.

The magic I constructed was for lightweighting my body and adjusting gravity. In an instant, I leaped backward── and then jumped over the fence.

The sound echoed behind me, a clash of swords. While Saber held him off, I needed to move to a wider space...!

I activated reinforcement magic. Enhancing my leg strength, I sprinted through over a hundred meters in an instant. This speed might even surpass that of Olympic athletes.

...A fierce chill behind me.

Following my intuition, I threw myself to the right. Immediately after, a whirlwind lifted my hair.

It was truly a close call.

The space where I had been just a second ago. The man's spear swung, as if gouging it out.

"I'm sorry, Master!"

A wave of magical power crackled through the air. Before I could understand that it was Saber, the man reacted.

The spear that was about to pursue me changed its course and aimed at Saber. Saber, who had pursued him like lightning, used her fierce determination to defend against the spear.

Taking advantage of that opening, I distanced myself. It was dangerous... even though it was just for a moment, that man caught up to me, leaving Saber behind.

"──Ha!"

The man whose attack was blocked smirked and toyed with his spear in his palm.

"Not bad at all. You need to be like that. I chased after your Master because it would be troublesome if you escaped... but I never expected that I would be easily caught up by your legs. Both the Master and the Servant seem to be able to provide me with some enjoyment."

He wore a daring smile as he prepared his spear. That thing shining crimson without end was undoubtedly his weapon.

"Servant of Lancer──!"

"Indeed. Your Servant, without a doubt, is Saber."

In response to Lancer's question, Saber took her stance without saying a word.

What she held in her hand was something transparent. Faintly distorting the air, it was a weapon. As a swordswoman, Saber's weapon must be a sword... but I couldn't confirm its shape or length at all.

That is the ability of that Noble Phantasm. The invisible sheath of wind, 'Invisible Air'.

──A Noble Phantasm is a symbol of legends.

For a legendary swordsman, it is their swordsmanship.

For renowned warriors, it is their weapon.

The ultimate masterpiece woven by the collective beliefs of the people, the embodiment of the established legends that every hero possesses. It possesses the power that rivals or surpasses even spirits, solely in terms of strength. One of the Noble Phantasms that my Servant, Saber, possesses is this transparent sheath.

If that's the case, then it's natural for Lancer, who is facing them, to also have a Noble Phantasm. As a Lancer-class summoned Servant, most likely that spear is their Noble Phantasm.

"Saber."

I quietly addressed her small back.

"I won't assist you. Show me your power here."

"Understood, Master. I will surely achieve victory for you."

She responded with unwavering strength and readied her sword, the silver knight.

The target of her sword, aimed directly, was Lancer. As she twisted his spear along with it, an overflowing fighting spirit spoke volumes.

"Hah, how interesting──!"

The first to move was Lancer.

Without any preparatory movements, he thrust his spear at the highest speed. The spearhead, released without missing its mark, was a lightning-fast strike. If they say Saber twisted his spear with her sword, it was as if the spear would pierce through her along with the sword. That speed was incomparable to the attack aimed at me.

Responding to the surging lightning, Saber matched it. Her swift strike clashed with the spearhead.

Closing in with a counterattack, faster than the returning spear. Before the magic spear could return, the blue warrior was struck down──!

"Fool, is that all, Saber!"

However, if Saber raced at the speed of the wind, Lancer surpassed even sound.

A polearm-type weapon creates an opening after an attack. After thrusting with a spear, there is a small amount of time required to bring it back to one's hand.

...But, that reasoning doesn't apply to this man.

The spear, which was pulled back at a speed surpassing Saber's reaction, aimed for Saber's neck in the blink of an eye.

"Kuh──!"

The white knight halted.

A polearm-type weapon, in contrast to a sword, has a longer range. But as a trade-off, it becomes difficult to deal with when the enemy closes in.

Therefore, Lancer didn't let Saber get closer. He kept a favorable distance and intercepted Saber.

His spear was like a torrential rain. Head, throat, neck, chest, arms, legs. It poured down, relentlessly piercing every part without interruption. Continuous attacks followed by continuous attacks. There wasn't a single opening. Leaving sound far behind, the red lightning strikes were unleashed. That speed, that weight. No matter how sturdy the armor, it would be shredded to pieces in an instant.

─However. If Lancer is the swiftest Servant, Saber is the most exceptional. Dodging such spear strikes is a piece of cake for Saber, who possesses superior instincts.

"Haa──!"

Dodging thrusts, deflecting sweeps, and repelling thunder-like flashes.

Saber managed to fend off all of Lancer's spear strikes with ease.

...No, it would be misleading to say that she just fended them off. The tables had already turned in terms of offense and defense. Saber repelled Lancer's fierce attacks with her utmost vigor...!

"Tch, using such a bizarre thing...!"

A click of the tongue leaked out.

Lancer's spear was a powerful weapon. The spearhead was sharp, and its range was wide. In close combat, having a longer reach naturally provides an advantage.

But at the same time, spears are popular weapons. Being famous means that tactics using spears are widely known.

──Therefore, predicting attacks is easy.

No matter how much speed and attack power they possess, the used attack methods are always fixed. If that's the case, it is entirely possible to predict and defend against them.

Even if that Lancer may be a divine warrior, Saber, on the other hand, is also a legendary hero. Anticipating attacks is an easy task for Saber, who possesses excellent intuition.

"You coward, what is the meaning of concealing your own armaments...!"

And lastly──these two have vastly different basic capabilities.

"Haa──!"

"Tch...!"

Unrelenting consecutive strikes.

Lancer's spear keeps increasing its speed limitlessly. How high will the gear go? It is impossible to estimate.

Due to the excessive speed, even the afterimages lingering in the air start to blur. One can't even tell which one is the real spear from the sidelines.

Not only thrusts but also strikes and sweeps were interwoven in his fighting style, truly resembling that of a beast. With all forms of violence, Lancer confronts Saber.

However, despite the indiscriminate attacks, their aim is precise. Spear showers pour down without rhythm or pause.

Saber, in response, remained silent. With each step back, she cornered Lancer with precise sword strikes.

The onslaught of the divine spear cannot be stopped by the assault of the Knight King. She parried thrusts and strikes, and launched counterattacks that overwhelmed them.

Even though the blade cannot be seen, its trajectory is a literal death sentence. Dozens of sword strikes released per second slice through Lancer with the accompanying gust of wind alone.

──This is the Holy Grail War.

A war that commands transcendent beings called Heroic Spirits, beyond the reach of humans.

I, however, cannot intervene in this battle. I see no opportunity to protect Saber or attack Lancer.

Unbeknownst to me, I had become engrossed in this battle.

In terms of time, it was just a fleeting moment. But after an endless exchange of blows, a particularly sharp sound of steel resounded. Before I could perceive that Lancer's spear had been deflected, Saber rushed forward.

This time, it was a desperate situation. Saber's sword aimed directly at Lancer's neck...!

"Damn...!"

A curse escaped the man's mouth.

To block Saber's sword strike, he had no choice but to use an equal spear strike. But the spear was deflected and would be cut down before he could bring it back.

Unlike their previous duel, Saber's speed surpassed even Lancer's. Therefore, he couldn't retrieve his spear.

Thus, Lancer resorted to a simple method.

If he couldn't use the spear, he kicked up Saber's blade with his own legs...!

"What...!?"

Saber was astonished. However, in that brief moment, Lancer indeed survived.

The distance between them instantly widened. Perhaps to rectify the unfavorable situation, Lancer swiftly disengaged. Saber's strike only slightly grazed Lancer's hair.

With a fierce expression, Lancer glared at Saber.

Naturally so. Every one of his spear strikes had been parried. Despite giving it his all, his spear was effortlessly defended by Saber.

On the other hand, Saber showed no signs of fatigue. Despite enduring those intense spear strikes and overwhelming Lancer, she still had room to spare.

I was convinced. My Saber was──without a doubt, the strongest.

──What's the matter, Lancer? Your spear isn't just something of that level.

"Shut up, Saber. What are you hiding in that wind with your sword? ...And before we fight, I have a proposal."

An unexpected statement. Perhaps surprised by Lancer's words, Saber furrowed her brow.

"We're both seeing each other for the first time, right? How about we call it a draw for now? That girl over there is just dazed, and my Master is a useless coward who won't show his face. I think it would be preferable to postpone the match until we're in perfect condition──"

──I refuse. You should die here, Lancer.

Without missing a beat, Saber dismissed Lancer's proposition.

Of course. Why should we willingly accept the enemy's proposal when we have the advantage? If we press on like this, Saber's victory is assured.

Lancer seemed to have anticipated that answer. He muttered, "I see," and──

"...Then, I'll take that heart of yours──!"

A thunderous sound reverberated.

Lancer, who had not assumed a ready stance until now, finally did so.

The tip of his spear was lowered as if licking the ground. There was no room for error in his impeccable posture, surpassing everything before.

──This is bad. In that instant, I had a hunch, and Lancer's figure sank.

As soon as the spear tilted, the air twisted.

Vast amounts of magical energy were drawn into the spear. Mana converged at a single point as if revering it.

That was undoubtedly the man's trump card. A unique and lethal weapon, a "Noble Phantasm." Lancer was attempting to unleash it.

A Noble Phantasm is a weapon that overwhelms others with its very existence alone. However, its essence lies in activating its true power through the use of its "True Name."

Weapons of heroes who once vanquished evil, defeated the wicked, and killed gods. Servants reproduce their true value with their own magical energy.

It is truly the embodiment of legends. The ultimate secret technique of heroes who achieved numerous feats and left their names in the world.

The attack that Lancer was about to unleash was undoubtedly of that caliber. I don't know what kind of Noble Phantasm it is, but once it is activated, Saber will be defeated.

That's probably how it is. It doesn't matter how superior Saber is; that Noble Phantasm will kill her.

──

Saber's face tightened. Her intuition seemed to have realized her own impending death.

In response to Lancer, wind emanated from Saber's sword. By now, Saber was not careless. She was preparing to unleash her own final weapon──a Noble Phantasm!

"......"

I couldn't move a finger.

This was truly a deadly situation. Whether Lancer's spear rushes forward or Saber's sword howls, the outcome will be decided in an instant.

Who will stand next, Lancer or Saber? If one of them can overturn their defeat, then──

"────Who is it...!!"

We had overlooked the presence of a third party.

"...Eh?"

Dumbfounded. The figure I glimpsed for just a moment was undoubtedly wearing a school uniform.

No way. Are there still students remaining at the school...!

I failed. I was too focused on Lancer and neglected to pay attention to the surrounding situation. It wouldn't be strange if someone had stayed behind at school for some reason──!

After a momentary lapse, Lancer had disappeared when I regained my senses.

Frantically scanning the surroundings, I saw Saber standing in a poised position, as if ready to dash off at any moment. Her gaze pierced straight through me, as if waiting for something.

Saber is my Servant. Being dutiful, she did not pursue Lancer and instead awaited my instructions, despite my absentmindedness.

How careless of me. There's no way Saber would stray from her Master without permission...!

"Oh no... Saber, go after Lancer immediately!"

Saber nodded, her movements confirming her understanding. Without even turning towards me, she vanished, chasing after Lancer.

She knows too. Erasing the witness of the mystery is the most basic rule for a magician. That Lancer must have gone to kill the student who witnessed him, even if it meant delaying his confrontation with Saber...!

Ah, damn it, how foolish of me...!

I've never made such a mistake in the past ten years or so, but why, of all days, today...!

***

In a cold hallway, where not even moonlight reached, Saber stood quietly.

Her lips were tightly pressed together, and she bowed her head, restraining her anger. At her feet... there lay a lifeless body.

...The sharp smell of rusty iron pricked my nose.

The puddle of blood that filled the hallway spoke of the fact that the body had been alive just moments ago.

"...Chilling to the core... the scent of blood."

"Chilling to the core... the scent of blood."

"I will go after Lancer. He should be returning to his Master. I will take care of this person."

"...Understood."

With a bitter murmur, Saber rushed away.

The anguish contained in those words was heavy. Even though we had only been together for a few days, I knew well of her sense of responsibility. But... this responsibility lies not with her, but with me.

If only I had been more attentive. If only I had given my instructions earlier... this situation could have been avoided, for sure.

Therefore, this is my responsibility. Since there is no concept of good or evil in the path of a magician, I had long since prepared myself for a day like this.

I had prepared myself, or so I thought...

"..."

My hand trembled.

Why... I, who should be composed, couldn't even move my hand.

To confirm the student lying face down... frightened me.

To confront the responsibility... frightened me.

To be told by the deceased that it's all my fault... frightened me.

Though I had always been prepared for this to happen... I was terribly and selfishly afraid.

"...I'm sorry. I'll stay with you until the end."

Forcing down my trembling finger, I confirmed the student's face.

"──Huh?"

Time stood still.

"You're kidding. Why are you here...?"

I became furious.

In an instant, I forgot the fear from a moment ago and became completely enraged.

...I know. It's all my fault.

It's only natural that Lancer killed this person. Erasing witnesses is a fundamental rule, so there's no basis for blaming him.

But... I can't help but despise this person who happened to be here in this situation at this time...!

"──"

But... what luck.

That person is not dead yet.

If it had been a piercing to the head, they would have died instantly. But the wound went through their heart.

Just a single stab.

From the cleanly destroyed heart, blood was not spewing out as much as I had expected.

However, if blood flow to the brain is cut off, it will be over. Miraculously, this person still had breath... but within a few seconds, that breath will also cease.

...There is a way.

Modern medicine cannot keep this person alive. Yet I have a means to do something about it.

My trump card. If I use it, I might be able to do something.

But... is there a point in going that far?

This person's death is my responsibility. But originally, it's this person's fault for being here at the school at a time like this.

First and foremost, this is something my father left for me alone. A crystal of powerful magical energy. Using such a trump card so easily in a preliminary battle...

"──So what if it is? Fool."

Muttering that, I knelt down next to the dying person.

***

"...Ah, I messed up."

With regret, I raised the pendant that had become lighter. After returning home, I sat on the sofa, immersed in depression.

Almost forgetting about it... I hurriedly picked up this jewel. Although there is still some magical energy left, compared to the initial amount, it can almost be called empty. I used one of my trump cards in such a preliminary battle.

Of course, it's only natural. It was an absurdly reckless move to resurrect someone whose heart had been so thoroughly destroyed. Although it was a success, I can't help but feel disappointed about losing one or two jewels...

Considering the value that the jewel held, even I feel down. With that much magical energy, I could have done most things...

"Well, whatever. There's nothing I can do about what's done. I'll reflect on it."

I have informed Saber through telepathy that I have returned home. Given enough time, she will also return.

Since what is lost will not return, there is no use in regretting it. I should make better use of my time.

Yes, yes... I forcibly convinced myself and switched my thoughts.

The first thing to think about is the battle with Lancer. It was my first time facing another Servant, and it far surpassed my imagination.

"Actually, I couldn't do anything..."

The battle between Saber and Lancer.

Although my Saber overwhelmed him, the thought of Lancer being even stronger... sends shivers down my spine. I am useless as a Master just standing there. I need to devise better strategies for the next time.

...And Lancer's Noble Phantasm. Even if Saber has the advantage, if that is activated, there is a possibility of being easily defeated.

A hero's Noble Phantasm is that powerful. It's the legendary weapon that appears in stories, so when it's used as is...

"But we would know if it were used, right?"

Noble Phantasms also have weaknesses.

Servants, in other words, Heroic Spirits. If Heroic Spirits are beings shaped by people's faith, their legends are naturally engraved in history. By following those legends, one can come to understand the abilities and even weaknesses of a Servant.

That is why Servants do not reveal their true names. The class names like Lancer and Saber also serve to conceal their true identities. Using Noble Phantasms so easily is a last resort. The release of a Noble Phantasm is equivalent to revealing their true identity.

Lightly using Noble Phantasms is the worst option. While hiding the true identity of my Servant, the key to this Holy Grail War lies in how to discern the true identities of the enemy Servants... It's not an exaggeration to say that.

...However, the strength of a Servant is determined not only by their Noble Phantasms but also by other factors.

For example, it is the rank of the Heroic Spirit. It goes without saying that a hero with greater achievements or a hero with superior weapons is stronger.

In that regard, my Saber boasts the highest level of fame. The great hero of England, King Arthur. Though in reality, she was a woman... her rank is undoubtedly of the highest order.

However, in this Holy Grail War, there are other factors at play. These are the seven classes and the additional special abilities attached to them. Depending on compatibility, even a Servant of lower rank has the potential to defeat a Servant of higher rank. In fact, there have been such cases in the past.

"────"

As I pondered such things, I realized that it had already become late at night.

Since Saber had just returned, I asked about the results. In response to my question, Saber wore an apologetic expression.

"I apologize, Rin. The opponent seems to be a very cautious Master. I also lost sight of Lancer along the way."

"Thank you for your efforts, Saber... Well, I guess it won't be easy after all."

I sighed.

How did Saber perceive me? Saber raised an eyebrow as if to say, "Hmm?".

"Saber, the reason we couldn't defeat Lancer in this battle lies in my incompetence. It wouldn't be a bad idea to find him right away and settle the previous match."

Huh. She seems angry.

...Could it be that she truly believes she made a mistake?

I smiled wryly and waved my hand, saying, "No, no."

"Saber, I think you did well in that battle. If there is any fault, it's mine. First of all, it's a problem that we started fighting without all the Masters being gathered yet."

The Holy Grail War officially begins when all seven Masters are assembled. Since the number is not complete yet—once it is, Kirei will take some action—normally, we would have avoided fighting before that.

But, well, what's done is done.

From another perspective, this might have been fortunate. Although the chances are low, if that Lancer had actively targeted me, or if the enemy Master had been acting in conjunction with Lancer... I might not be here right now.

Even in this battle, it would have been dangerous if Lancer's Noble Phantasm had been activated. Saber also seemed to have tried to counter it with her own Noble Phantasm, but Lancer was definitely faster. Lancer prioritized chasing after that person and as a result, it ended in a draw... Wait a moment.

"──This could be bad."

Wait. Let's think calmly again, Rin Tohsaka.

Come to think of it, I haven't manipulated the memories of that person who witnessed the battle.

Lancer prioritized eradicating the witnesses rather than settling things with us. Even though there was a possibility of defeating Saber with his Noble Phantasm. Lancer was so desperate to eliminate the witnesses... or what would Lancer's Master do if they learned that person was still alive?

"I won't let that person live──!"

I quickly stood up from the sofa. When I looked at the clock, over three hours had passed since then.

In terms of time, it's quite bad. I might not make it in time, but if I can't make it in time, there would be no meaning in using my trump card to save them!

Ignoring Saber's wide-eyed look, I dashed out into the night streets.

***

Running.

Running.

Running at full speed.

I ran through the town at a speed that wouldn't be surprising if it were in tomorrow's newspaper.

Fortunately, I knew the location of that person's residence. I didn't get lost, perhaps by some stroke of luck.

"──"

Saber followed me silently.

However, her expression was resolute. It is likely that she has come to the same conclusion as me.

Servants are said to possess qualities similar to their Masters... But for both of us to not have considered what would happen to that person afterwards, it's not something to laugh about.

──Midnight.

Under the cloudy night sky, we arrived at our destination.

This mansion located in the corner of a residential area. It was a house that I had seen a few times before, but now it exuded a clearly unusual atmosphere.

"──! Please step back, Rin!"

Saber restrained me as I gasped for breath, trying to advance towards the mansion. In her right hand, she once again held an invisible sword.

Being stopped, I finally noticed... There is a Servant inside.

There is no mistaking that presence. It is undoubtedly the same Lancer as before. Lancer had arrived ahead of us and was chasing after that person...!

"If it comes to this, the first move is crucial...! Saber, take care of him──"

Just as I was about to give instructions to Saber, in that moment...

──A flash as bright as day burst forth from the mansion.

"──!?"

What I sensed was only its power.

Even without directly confirming it, the tremendous magical energy that could be felt through the walls of the mansion. In an instant, it appeared and immediately materialized... There was no mistake, it was summoned there.

"This can't be true──"

Unbelievable.

But I have no choice but to believe.

The fact that Lancer, who had fled from the mansion while I was lost in thought, was the proof.

"Saber, is this──"

"Yes. It is probably the seventh Servant."

Saber prepared her sword, staring intently at the walls without a moment's lapse. Her gaze was directed towards someone inside the walls we had yet to see.

There is nothing I can do against Saber, who leaves no openings. The numerous situations that unfolded like an avalanche were beyond my ability to comprehend.

The wind blows.

The clouds that covered the sky clear, and moonlight shines through.

Illuminated by that light──something unexpected stood on top of the wall.

"──Insolent fools. Do not gaze upon me without my permission, you lowly mongrels."

A dazzling light.

It was not the brilliance of the moon hanging in the sky, but rather the brilliance of the golden man standing in front of me.

Instead of being illuminated by the moon, he seemed to command the moon. The man clad in golden armor looked down at me with cold and cruel eyes.

"You insignificant beings have no right to look at me. You have no right to ask anything of me. You have no right to converse with me.

──Mongrels. You shall atone for the great sin of peering into me with your lives."

So arrogant.

So overbearing.

Just hearing it freezes me, a voice so cold and ruthless.

This man, radiating an overwhelming presence, is──the seventh Servant of the Fifth Holy Grail War.
