Diego Alatriste y Tenorio
A soldier and sword for hire
Diego Alatriste y Tenorio was born in the end of XVI in Spain, when it was "the empire in which the sun never sets. He enlisted the Spanish army when he was 13 as musician. His whole further life becomes connected with serving the king.
In spite of his nickname, he never got an official rank. Diego was called Captain after taking command over his unit after all officers were killed in action.
Though war seems to be a very profitable thing, Spain had already felt what inflation means. The economical state of the country was so poor, that soldiers' salaries were extremely low and even that sums were paid with delays. In such situation Diego had to earn his livings with the only way he could: with his swordmanship.
He became a sword for hire, taking tasks of beating out debts, taking place of a noble don in duel and other "dirty" business.
One of such tasks puts him in the sight of all-mighty count-duke of Olivares, the prime-minister of Philip IV, or, rather, the true ruler of Spain. As a result Alatriste becomes an agent for "tricky" operations.
Though, Captain died as a true soldier, on the field of Rocroi, as if the symbol of the fall of his country.
But the problem is that the existence of this person is rather doubtful. The only source of information about him, used by a Spanish journalist in his books about him are "Memoirs of officer Balboa", an "autobiographic" book where this person is mentioned. The problem is that this book was originally owned by a family which is mentioned in one of the same author's book.
As additional "proves" of Alatriste's existence serve elements of poems by Francisco de Quevedo and Lope de Vega. There is also a reference to the " The Surrender of Breda" by Velazquez where he originally should be.
In all the rest Captain Alatriste is an imaginary character, who managed to get enough popularity to take a strong position not only in Spanish mindset but also around the world, which, combined with the attempts to set him as a real person, gave him a chance to turn into Heroic Spirit.
