As Vegeta gritted his teeth, unable to come up with a firm reason to reject making me immortal, I opened my mouth. "I'd rather die."
"What?!" Krillin asked me, stupefied. He'd just requested that I become immortal, and my immediate response had been 'I'd rather die.' In his shoes, I might have been surprised, too, so I decided to explain it in more detail.
"I refuse to get stronger like that. If I became immortal, then every single day, I'd have to live with the shortcut that I took to get there. I refuse to cheat myself." I explained. That was probably the main reason that canon Vegeta hadn't bothered to gather the Dragon Balls and make his own wish for immortality some time between the Namek arc and the Androids arc. The Saiyan pride was a funny thing, inflexible and stupid.
I could see my words hitting a chord within Vegeta, but after a moment, he coughed, making a decision. "If she won't do it, the boy's too green, and the Namekian simply won't become strong enough to win the battle. Nappa and I are the only ones capable of fighting the Ginyu Force off." Vegeta hesitated before saying this next part, but with a sigh, he eventually did. "And if you want to, you can place a limit on it."
"A limit?" Krillin asked.
"Make Nappa and I's immortality temporary... just immortal until Frieza is dead, or we enter Earth's atmosphere. That way, you can protect your family, and I can accomplish my own goals." Vegeta conceded.
"Vegeta?!" Nappa exclaimed, a strange hint of pride and surprise in his voice.
"Shut it, Nappa. The girl's right. Getting powers from some mythical orb is a shortcut. If it wasn't for Frieza, I'd never even consider it..." Vegeta clenched his fist, "But we have no choice. Where is the damn ball?" He asked.
"We'll show you. Let's go." Piccolo announced.
"Piccolo!?" Krillin exclaimed, surprised.
"To be clear, we're holding you to that limit. We'll make the wish for you to become temporarily immortal. If you attempt to make any noise while in the presence of the dragon, we'll talk over you to change the wish and make Hanna immortal instead. Try anything funny, we'll kill you where you stand." Piccolo stated coolly.
"That's fine. Try to cheat me, though, and immortality will not save you." Vegeta agreed.
"Alright, then. Let's go. We don't have much time." Piccolo said. We flew off. To my surprise, I was suddenly the slowest one out of all of us, and not by a small amount. My power level was less than half of everyone else's, after all.
"Hurry up, girl!" Vegeta shouted back at me as we flew.
"Hanna, go ahead." Krillin agreed with Vegeta, telling me to go Grey.
"Sorry, I can't! Not for long distances. I'll be totally useless afterwards." That wasn't the full truth, but it made Vegeta click his tongue, mutter something about weakling Earth-Saiyans, and drop the issue. The several days of flight turned into a flight that took less than an hour with us all going full speed. If I'd gone full power, it would have taken less than half of that. About halfway to the cave, I could sense the Ginyu Force land.
"We're here. I'll go in and get the Dragon Ball." Piccolo said, entering the cave without wasting a moment. Only a few moments later, he was outside, being chased by Bulma's shouts, which we all ignored. The one-star Dragon Ball was in his arm.
"Quickly, follow me to the others!" we all blasted off without explaining anything to Bulma and Cargo.
...
Ginyu and his force landed on the planet, exited their pods, and did their little poses for Frieza.
"At ease, men. I have an important errand for you."
"Thank you, Lord Frieza. Glad to be of service. What is our mission?" Ginyu asked, getting right down to business.
"It's quite simple, Captain. I want my Dragon Balls recovered, and Vegeta brought to me." Frieza told him.
"Vegeta?" Ginyu muttered, confused. The Vegeta that he was familiar with was an insignificant pest at most. Zarbon or Dodoria would have been more than enough to catch him.
"Ha, ha! Stupid Saiyan" Recoome exclaimed.
"He always did have an overblown ego. Looks like it finally got him into trouble." Burter thought aloud.
"So, you've finally shown your true colors, Vegeta." Guldo muttered to himself, resentment in his voice. While the others had only ever seen Vegeta as a pest, Guldo's impression of the Saiyan was something else.
With all of their thoughts on Vegeta aired, Frieza continued, "You can expect resistance. Not only does Vegeta likely still have Nappa by his side, but his strength has grown considerably since last you saw him. He even managed to kill Zarbon and Dodoria, to give you an estimate."
Ginyu and his team all turned on their scouters and set them to monitor Vegeta and his team. They were surprised by what they saw.
"There's six of them in all, it seems. Average power level of 30,000, except for that one." Ginyu muttered.
"Yeah, but even that one's pretty strong compared to normal people, at ten thousand." Jeice said beside him.
"Huh. One of them's probably Nappa, and the rest are probably those pests that we encountered earlier. Just to be clear, I don't care what you do with the rest of them. You can kill them, but I want Vegeta brought back to me alive. Along with my Dragon Balls." Frieza ordered.
"Consider it done, Lord Frieza. 30,000's nothing to the likes of us. Doing your bidding is our pleasure, Lord Frieza." Captain Ginyu declared obediently. The majority of the Ginyu Force behind him chuckled smugly in agreement, but there was one member who wasn't laughing or smiling at all. Guldo. He was remembering Vegeta's poor treatment of him back on planet Frieza. Now, he'd be able to get his revenge. So why wasn't he smiling? "Damn you, Vegeta." He muttered to himself, causing Recoome to grow concerned.
"What's wrong, Guldo? Got something in your eye?"
"Nothing. I-I see revenge."
