Bruce was very much the gentleman and didn't bother Kara or Jennifer until Kara walked to the door, opened it, and asked, "When are you going to stop peeking? Why don't you just come in?"
He entered, looking slightly uneasy.
"I bought some drinks. Don't worry, they're all safe energy drinks," Bruce said, placing several bottles on the table next to Jennifer's hospital bed.
Jennifer nodded and thanked him.
Many people assume that pregnant women shouldn't drink energy drinks, but in reality, it's best to avoid caffeine, as it might be harmful to the baby. Caffeine can stimulate the brain and nervous system. Most energy drinks, as long as they're not meant for extreme fatigue, contain ingredients beneficial to the body and are generally safe in moderation.
Jennifer, due to her work, often drank these kinds of drinks to stay focused.
Kara watched them both, and it seemed Bruce already knew about Jennifer's pregnancy. However, Bruce appeared a bit lost, unsure of how to handle the situation or his relationship with Jennifer.
Jennifer, on the other hand, acted naturally and smiled at Bruce. "You've already done a lot for me. Now that Kara is here, you can go home, Mr. Wayne."
Bruce looked at Kara.
Kara shrugged. "Alright, she's in good hands with me."
Bruce clearly didn't want to leave, but since Jennifer had said so, he could only reply, "Call me if you need anything."
Then he left.
Jennifer shook her head and greeted Kara, "Make yourself comfortable. I still have some documents to go through. Thanks for staying with me tonight, but I'll be discharged tomorrow. Those idiots think they can scare me? I'm not going down without a fight."
Kara admired Jennifer's resilience. If it had been anyone else, even a tough guy, they would likely be shaken after surviving a bombing. Yet here Jennifer was, already back to work as if nothing had happened. That was the kind of strong, charismatic woman Jennifer had become, though Kara couldn't help but think that Bruce, blind as he was, only saw his childhood friend.
"Just don't push yourself too hard," Kara said, though knowing Jennifer, it was unlikely she'd heed the warning. "And remember, it's not just you anymore."
Jennifer paused and looked at Kara with mock annoyance. "Did you really have to bring that up?"
Kara shrugged. "It's true. Besides, if it comes to it, I can help raise the baby."
Jennifer laughed softly and teased, "Are you sure you're not a lesbian? I don't want to marry you."
Kara huffed, "Well, I'll at least be the godmother, and you're not getting out of that."
In many cultures, godparents or guardians are chosen to look after children in the event of a tragedy, and it was no different for Kara, Jennifer, and their other close friend, Dani. They'd long made promises to take care of each other's kids if it ever came to that. Though Kara had no plans to marry or have kids of her own, she and Dani had already agreed to share the responsibility.
Jennifer shook her head, not intending to take Kara's offer seriously, but she didn't want to discuss it further. She focused back on the file in front of her.
If you're wondering why Jennifer had so many files to go through, it was because she and Harvey Dent were preparing to list hundreds, even thousands, of crimes for Gotham's gang leaders to be prosecuted for.
That's right—hundreds of charges.
So you can imagine how much research needed to be done.
Judging by the number of criminals awaiting trial, this wasn't an easy task.
Judges don't just sit there banging gavels. It's far more complicated.
Kara didn't disturb her further. She picked up a drink, pulled up a chair, and after a while, climbed into the bed beside Jennifer. It was a tight fit, but two girls could share a hospital bed without a problem.
Kara wrapped her arm around Jennifer's waist and fell asleep quickly.
Jennifer, however, was slightly frustrated. Not only was Kara in the way, but she was holding onto her belly rather tightly. Did she think she was going to deliver the baby in the middle of the night?
Jennifer could only shake her head, exasperated, but understanding. It wasn't often that Kara came by, and she had made the effort to stay overnight.
As Jennifer reflected, she couldn't help but feel nostalgic. Back in their school days, the three of them—Kara, Jennifer, and Dani—used to lie side by side, talking late into the night. Even in college, they'd all sleep in the same bed sometimes, despite having their own.
It was sad that Kara had grown distant from them for a while, especially after she left for those three long years.
Jennifer reached out and pinched Kara's cheek playfully, muttering softly, "You heartless idiot."
She and Dani had spent those years worrying about what had happened to Kara. They imagined all kinds of terrible scenarios—whether Kara had been hurt, captured, or even killed. Sometimes, Jennifer woke up from nightmares about never seeing her best friend again.
Shaking the memories from her mind, Jennifer finally put down the thick file she'd been working on, patted Kara's arm until she moved, and snuggled in to rest with her.
But suddenly, Kara opened her eyes. She glanced at Jennifer, who was fast asleep, and carefully got out of bed. Her expression was cold and intense.
Kara silently floated across the floor without making a sound, her feet just an inch above the ground. She didn't want to disturb Jennifer, so she used her powers to quietly open the door without a creak.
With that, Kara left the hospital and soared into the night sky, rising above the city and disappearing into the clouds.
Hovering high above, she surveyed Gotham's streets below, closing her eyes to focus and activating her super hearing. The cacophony of the city poured into her ears, but she sifted through the noise, searching for one particular sound.
Moments later, Kara's eyes shot open. She turned her gaze toward a specific location and activated her enhanced vision.
"Joker, I found you," she whispered.
