Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 322. Possessive Embrace

Angel nodded. The tension that had been building in his chest slowly dissipated. He had spent so much of his life in control, always knowing exactly what he was doing, always sure of his decisions and actions. But this—this was different. It was vulnerable, raw, and entirely new. It was a new sensation for him and he was enjoying it.

He had been uncertain, even afraid, of not meeting her expectations, of not knowing how to navigate this uncharted territory. Yet, here she was, reassuring him with her gentle touch and her sincere words.

"I'm so glad it was with you," Angel finally said, his voice soft but filled with conviction. He leaned down, pressing a tender kiss to Rose's forehead, sealing the sincerity of his words with that gentle touch. Rose couldn't help but let out a small chuckle in response.

"You sound so relieved about that," she teased, her tone light and playful. "I think Lady Belle isn't that bad," she added with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

Angel's expression immediately shifted, a frown forming on his face. He knew exactly what Rose was thinking, even without her saying it. If their paths hadn't crossed in the way they did—if he hadn't met her in the middle of the war, if they hadn't reunited, if he hadn't brought her to Euphorion as a political prisoner—then perhaps Lady Belle would have been the one beside him now. Lady Belle had always been the strongest candidate for his wife, the one favored by his court and advisors. By all rights, it should have been her who accompanied Angel in this bed, in his chamber, as his queen.

"Why did you bring up her name all of a sudden?" Angel asked, his voice laced with mild irritation, though he knew Rose was only joking. "You should have shown your jealousy a bit. Yet you mentioned her name like it's nothing," he added, his frown deepening as he considered the oddity of discussing someone else, especially another woman, right after such an intimate moment.

Rose giggled, clearly amused by his reaction. "Oh, don't be so serious, Angel. I was just teasing you. Besides, it's true, isn't it? If things had been different, Lady Belle would have been the one here with you."

Angel's frown didn't ease as Rose's words lingered between them. Instead, he pulled her closer, his arms tightening around her in a protective, almost possessive embrace. He held her as if grounding himself in the reality that she was truly there with him, in his arms, and not some fleeting illusion.

"Maybe," Angel began, his voice tinged with a rare uncertainty. "In the past, it didn't matter to me who might have been by my side, who accompanied me in bed. All I thought about was responsibility, work, and the kingdom. Nothing else seemed to matter. Marriage… was the same as another duty for me."

He paused, his gaze distant as he reflected on the man he had been not so long ago. "I didn't have any personal goals beyond those things," he admitted, his tone laced with a quiet resignation. "I didn't even think about my own happiness, not really. Everything I did was driven by logic, by duty. I always made decisions with my head, never with my heart."

Rose listened intently, her hand gently resting on his chest, feeling the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her fingers. She could sense his seriousness, the burden of a life lived under the constant pressure of duty and expectation. She knew Angel was a man shaped by his responsibilities, but hearing him speak so candidly about it made her heart ache for him.

Angel continued, his voice growing softer as he delved deeper into his memories. "It wasn't just a choice. It was a necessity. When I was still the prince of Asteria, a small mistake could mean severe punishment from my uncle. Or worse, it could mean death on the battlefield. I learned early on that there was no room for error, no room for weakness. So I shut down everything that wasn't essential to survival. Emotions, desires, happiness… I pushed them all aside."

Rose's heart tightened as she imagined the young prince he had been, forced to navigate a world where a single misstep could lead to disaster. It explained so much about the man he had become, the stoic, unyielding king who rarely let anyone see beneath the surface. He had built walls around himself, walls of logic and duty, to protect himself from the vulnerabilities that could have destroyed him.
