Third Arc (Fallen Heart) - 303. Fair Trade IV
Angel's voice pulled Lady Belle out of her daydream, bringing her back to the present. "I was thinking," he began, his tone soft yet deliberate, "if you could also give me something. Let's say, as a hope that we will still have a good relationship despite all the decisions I have taken."
Lady Belle fell silent, the weight of his request settling over her like a warm, comforting blanket. This was the first time Angel had asked her for something, and it was so unusual that she found herself momentarily at a loss for words. Her heart swelled with happiness, a feeling so intense she could hardly speak.
"What could I possibly give you, Your Majesty?" she finally asked, her voice trembling with emotion.
Angel hummed thoughtfully, his eyes narrowing slightly as he considered her question. His gaze then fell on the bracelet adorning Lady Belle's wrist. He pointed to it and said, "What about that bracelet?"
Lady Belle's reaction was immediate and visceral. Shocked, she instinctively covered the bracelet with her other hand, her face a clear portrait of objection. This bracelet had brought her luck, or so she believed, and the thought of parting with it filled her with an inexplicable fear. If she gave it to Angel, would her luck vanish with it?
"Forgive me, Your Majesty," she said, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and sorrow. "I can't give it to you."
Angel remained calm, studying her with an unreadable expression. "I see. This bracelet seems very valuable to you. Is it from a man you love? From the design, it doesn't look like it's from Euphorion." His words were carefully chosen, a subtle play to gauge her reaction and perhaps learn more about the mysterious piece of jewelry.
Lady Belle's eyes widened at his insinuation, her heart pounding in her chest. "No, Your Majesty, it's not like that," she said quickly, her voice defensive. "It's just… this bracelet is special to me. It was a gift from a wealthy merchant from the Kingdom of Pontus. He said it was an antique, a charm for love and luck. My father, the duke, didn't believe in its supposed powers, but I've always cherished it."
Angel's gaze remained fixed on the bracelet, his expression one of mild curiosity and intrigue. "Interesting," he murmured. "But are you sure there's no valuable history aside from that? Perhaps you have feelings for the merchant or maybe his son?"
Lady Belle's heart skipped a beat, panic surging through her veins. The last thing she wanted was for Angel to think she had set her heart on another man, especially after he had shown her such kindness. She had to tread carefully, not wanting to lose the opportunity Angel had given her by showing his care.
"No, Your Majesty, it's not from another man," she said hurriedly, her voice tinged with desperation. "This is a gift, and I feel bad giving it away. After all, it's just a worthless item."
Angel tilted his head slightly, his eyes narrowing as he studied her face. "So, even though it is a worthless object, you are not interested in giving it to me?"
Lady Belle felt a lump form in her throat. His words cut deep, making her realize that she had no way out of this situation. Refusing the king's request outright was unthinkable, but parting with the bracelet felt like giving away a piece of her heart. She bit her lips, struggling with her emotions, before finally resigning herself to the inevitable.
"Fine," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I'll give it to you."
She slowly unclasped the bracelet, her fingers trembling as she removed it from her wrist. The weight of the bracelet in her hand seemed heavier than ever before. As she held it out to Angel, a wave of sadness washed over her. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was losing something irreplaceable.
Angel took the bracelet from her gently, his fingers brushing against hers for a brief moment. He studied the piece closely, his expression thoughtful. "Thank you, Lady Belle. I appreciate your willingness to part with something so important to you. It means a lot."
