“And just what’s going on here?” I demanded, nearing the cozy pair.

“You never told me your brother was so handsome, or so charming,” Nikki gushed.

“Because he’s not.”

“I think he is,” Nikki said, with a slight pout.

“My brother, he’s not my brother,” I said, staring daggers at Carl.

“Oh, really?”

“Did he say he was?” I asked.

“No,” Nikki confessed.

“Good, because Carl is my stepson,” I said, Nikki, making a face like a surprised fish. “I’m going to take him home now and let his father deal with him.”

Carl made a face like he just bit into a raw lemon and strolled down the corridor as casually as his mortally wounded pride would allow him.

“Your stepson,” Nikki repeated, shocked.

“Long story, see you next week?”

“Uh, yeah, okay,” Nikki said, wandering away, looking like she was still trying to do the math in her head.
