Chapitre 66: First siege (1)
"My glory? I'd rather you fought for your own glory."
"We could never! Strong one made us strong so we fight for your glory."
No room for negotiations, huh. The look in their eyes is one of absolute determination.
"Then I hope you kill many enemies in my honor."
"We will, strong one! With your blessing upon us, the enemy won't stand a chance."
"Don't take them lightly, we are up against a group sent to deal with us. They will have our strength in mind and send people they believe are strong enough to take us down. We have to prepare as much as possible."
"Command us, strong one!"
How should I command you if I don't know what exactly to do myself? Let's see, if we are the defending side this will likely end in a battle of attrition. So resources will become of great importance.
Monsters don't need to eat while in the dungeon so all that we can run out of his stuff to fight with. Melee weapons don't seem like a problem but we will quickly run out of ranged options.
"Go gather stones for the slingshots and long sticks to make javelins. If you come across more goblins ask them to come here to boost our numbers."
The goblins look at me as if had spoken some secret mantra, not simple instructions. The goblin leader then leaves with the swordsmen and some goblins to do as I said. Meanwhile, the hobgoblins move behind me and like two bodyguards. With their taller and more muscular build, they really do look the part but with my standing amongst the goblins, I won't be needing them.
Most of the goblins are still practicing in the large open area before my shack. They mindlessly swing their short sticks and slash at the air. Before them is a group that carries real swords, they must have been part of the raid team. They also act as instructors of sorts. Will they be able to get the same evolution as me?
<I doubt it. We've gone through all our records and the results look pretty grim.>
In what way?
<While your skill set certainly played a part we believe that the biggest factor of your evolution was your human mind and the intelligence associated with it.>
So only reincarnated humans can get this evolution?
<No. Look at it like this. Goblins before evolution are stupid but they can be taught. If a goblin gets taught to the level of reaching human intellect he should be able to access that evolution.>
As I said, impossible.
I walk over to my shack and begin to sharpen more sticks to make my make-shift javelins. The entire morning went by with me making those javelins. The goblin leader returned and brought sticks and stones. They tried to imitate me as I made javelins but returned to training after creating about twenty javelins each. Only one new goblin stayed behind and kept creating javelins.
Shortly before we finish I discover that both of us have acquired the skill make-shift crafting at level 1. Together we have created about 700 make-shift javelins. Hopefully, that will be enough.
By noon the goblins grow more agitated and I can also feel something radiating off the dungeon floor. The adventurers must be close.
<We've detected a spatial fluctuation that indicates that they have received support from the alpha plane. They should enter the dungeon any minute now.>
I pull up the dungeon map and look at the dungeon entrance while waiting for anything to happen. Another ten minutes pass before the first red dot enters. It's has begun.
We are on the third floor so for now, the intruders are still far from us. I'm tempted to leave the camp and scout out the enemies before they reach us but I hold off. Alarming them of our strangeness this soon would be bad. I wanted them to think we were nothing more than a bunch of rogue goblins.
While they make their way up to us I count the red dots and come to know that there are around 150 of them. A quick count of our own numbers reveals that I have around 200 goblins in the camp.
However, of those 200 only half of them have had any training. I reckon that I can think of myself as fortunate if any of them survive.
The anxiety in the camp increases as the adventurers draw near. By the time we can see them the goblin leader has to hold some of the new goblins back lest they leave the fortifications.
The adventurers are visibly unnerved by the fortified camp teeming with goblins before them. Not what you were expecting, eh? Just as I hoped.
The adventurers that have discovered us call the others and soon the entire group is within our sight. Sadly it would seem that my assessment skill can't make out a whole lot over this distance.
They discuss amongst themselves and after a while, a group of robed individuals steps forward. I can tell that they are mages but what are they going to do? Throw themselves into the spikes? Throw fireballs?
Wait... mages, fireballs. Shit!
"Take cover!"
I throw myself backward and roll of the earth hill we use to look over the wall. As I move backward I see a dozen or so fireballs be launched from the combined mage squad.
I hear the impacts of packed fire against wood and earth. A few goblins scream but thankfully most of them moved away from the wall like me. But that isn't the main concern right now. The only reason I believe we will be able to put a fight is due to these wooden defenses. If they are burnt and blasted down we won't stand a chance.
I cautiously move to look over the wall again. The mages are chanting to launch another salvo and the other adventurers don't seem to be moving.
