Weiling looked at Shu Ya with big eyes. ''Miss, why did you let him go?''
Shu Ya sighed and looked at the other three people. ''I can't leave and weak links by my side when we are about to start a new life. Mingli, come here, please.''
She took out the bag with money and counted a few big silver pieces. ''This is for him. I will not pay for his sister, but these days he did his job earnestly. I am not that excessive to not pay him for his work. Could you bring these to him.''
He looked at a bunch of silver and wrinkled his eyebrows. ''Miss, these are too much...'' But saw her expression. It was her decision so he just bowed and went outside.
He found him sitting with a serious expression and staring at the water. ''Miss Bai send you this monthly payment. I hope you won't regret your decision. If you get in trouble, later on, do not come to us. Miss clearly said what she wanted.'' He gave him the money bag and turned around to leave.
Tengfei looked at Mingli's back and sighed while holding the bag of silver tightly. He was still in front of the door when she spoke about the money. He actually forgot about that and wanted to go back inside. But then heard her words and swiftly walked a bit further. If he ever can in future he promised himself to help her.
He opened a bag and saw a bunch of big silver inside making him completely baffled. ''Miss Bai...'' His eyes watered and he almost regretted it, but remembered his life before and stopped himself. From now on he is a free man.
Now in the room were just Weiling and Shu Ya, sitting together and drinking tea. Shu Ya sat by the window while Weiling sat by the side and just enjoyed the tea. When she turned her eyes she could see Shu Ya looking dreamingly at the sea.
''Miss, what is so interesting by looking there?'' She couldn't understand.
Shu Ya pointed at the blue sky. ''You think this is fine and boring, but the more north we go, the colder weather will be and less and less we will open windows. There might be even days when we will have huge storms when this ship will fly around like a nutshell in the stream. When those days come, you will miss this sight. But that is not all. When we get to the north, there will be winter in front of the doors. For a long, long, long time, all we gonna see is grey clouds and white snow. So I am trying to enjoy every moment of good weather.''
Weiling shrugged. ''I was a maid for a long time. Looking at the sky as a servant, there is no time for such a thing to miss. Gray, green, blue, black, we do not care. As long we have a roof over our heads, a full belly and warm clothes, we are satisfied.'' She was a simple girl that just wanted simple things.
Shu Ya sighed. ''Don't say later on I didn't warn you.'' And continued watching outside.
On the other hand in kitchen Cook Tao was so amazed at the scorched rice that he made a bunch of it and then made porridge with some meat, vegetables and seasonings.
The thick porridge was a sensation between people. Getting full belly was something they haven't expected. And the taste was novel and appetizing. The bowls were filled to the brim so everyone had that night full belly and happily slept.
Cook Tao got a few more ideas with the scorched rice. He made a sweet tasty dish that was perfect for females and sent one to Shu Ya's room for her to taste it.
She looked ta a sumptuous meal and sighed. ''Weiling, while I eat go and see how are our people's dishes. If they don't have side dishes like us, lets split better than trow it away. I do not think it is possible for us to eat it all.''
And she was right. Only masters got full meals while all other commoners got the porridge. Her men were happy already about the meal but when Weiling brought the side dishes they got stunned.
She rolled her eyes. ''She is a small child and I can't eat rest. She hates waste of food, as you know they throw away rest. Please eat and bring the plates back to the kitchen when you are done.''
The only thing she left in the room were those sweet rice cookies. She slowly tasted it and nodded. ''This is fine as well. Weiling I would like to ask you one more thing before we go to rest. Send one of the men to the kitchen to tell Uncle Tao to try adding some sesame with sugar. It will give another layer of taste. Or if he can find dried fruits wouldn't be bad as well.'' Her word was accompanied by a slight smile while she put away the letter she was finished writing. ''There we will send this letter to Lord Ka and Lady Hong. They must be curious about what happened to us so far. I have no idea how to repay to them the kindness they showed me. Maybe one day, I will be able.''
She closed the envelope and with Weiling's help prepared for bed. She thought about her previous life and the current one. Even tho this child suffered so many wrongs but she would live nic life if she comes back. It was so comfortable having servants.
Shu Ya looked at Weilinga and chuckled. ''You are older than me so I will ask you something strange. Is it ok for me to feel comfortable as I have servants? It is weird and at the same time I like it.''
Weiling tucked her in and sat next to her looking at her with a smile. ''You were born to be pampered. To like this is your given right. It is not wrong or weird.''
Growing up in a country that looked down on past regimes she chuckled. They looked down but the workers had worse lives than servants in the past. With the money, they had to buy their own food clothes, pay rent. But servants in the past were given the clothes and food and...
But not every master was good. Servants could be sold or beaten to death for small failures while workers were protected by law. While comparing past lief and current life she fell asleep while Weiling sat next to her and patted her in comfort.
Weiling sighed. ''Young miss. You couldn't even have proper pampered life and think that us couple is already a lot. I need to teach you so many things." But no time. For now, she needs proper education in bearing, walking and talking. Her words are still so direct. I fear she won't be able to change that ever.
But looking at the way Weiling spoke Shu Ya just smirked and turned around. Her eyes opened and a cold light flashed inside. It seems many things need to change...
