These creatures emitting a faint blue light were like silk threads covering the beach on the seabed. Although their light was not bright enough, it was enough to illuminate the dark sea.
What were these? They looked like plants, but Lin had never seen a plant that glowed on its own. Although glowing on its own would allow it to absorb energy without wasting it, there would still be losses and it would not be able to maintain a perfect energy cycle.
The Leviathan used to have such a system, but it had deteriorated after a hundred million years.
But no matter what they were, using their light might be able to create a green carpet here...
But first, they had to solve the current problem.
The Leviathan followed the group of ammonites and swam across the glowing seabed. The giant fish was still following closely behind. Suddenly, a few ammonites slowed down and fell behind the Leviathan.
Lin did not turn to look, but she could clearly feel the strange vibrations of the water current when the ammonites were crushed by the Dunkleosteus.
The Dunkleosteus did not slow down in the slightest. It was not satisfied with just a few small ammonites. The ammonites seemed to have slowed down. Once again, a few ammonites fell behind and were crushed into pieces by the Dunkleosteus.
The Dunkleosteus could not catch up to the ammonites, but it seemed that the ammonites did not have the same endurance. Fatigue was caused by the cells not being able to expel waste in time, unable to provide nutrients and repair the damage caused by intense activity. In terms of endurance, Lin's Leviathan was the most perfect evolution. As long as there were nutrients stored in its body, it would never run out of energy.
The group of ammonites began to disintegrate due to the lack of stamina. Almost half of the ammonites were swimming slower and slower. At that moment, the giant ammonite with a diameter of two meters suddenly turned around. It opened its shell and extended dozens of tentacles, as if intending to face the Dunkleosteus head-on.
Would the ammonites do something like that?
The Dunkleosteus did not care about the size of the ammonites. It charged forward and opened its powerful mouth to bite the shell of the ammonites.
Large cracks instantly appeared on the hard shell of the Dunkleosteus. The countless tentacles of the Ammonites wrapped around the head of the Dunkleosteus and attacked its gills.
The gills of the dunkleosteus closed. Of course, it had a way to defend against its weak points. What the ammonite needed to do was to pull the gills apart and destroy the oxygen-absorbing structure inside.
It seemed to be a protracted battle, but under the pressure from the Dunkleosteus' mouth, cracks spread all over the ammonite's body. Although the ammonite did not extend its head, and only its tentacles were attacking from the outside, its internal organs seemed to have suffered a lot of damage under the pressure. The tentacles that clung tightly to the gills also began to lose their strength.
Two meters against seven meters, it had already tried very hard, but in the end, it was still not enough?
The mouth of the Dunkleosteus had evolved specifically to deal with extremely hard creatures like ammonites. This could be described as a 'natural enemy'.
The surrounding smaller ammonites had already fled. Even if the giant ammonite failed, it still won the lives of its compatriots.
Leviathan, on the other hand, had been watching the battle from a distance. Since the Dunkleosteus could not catch up to Leviathan, Lin had nothing to worry about.
In the end, the Dunkleosteus shattered the ammonite's shell. Most creatures would not eat the shell, but the Dunkleosteus would chomp down on the meat and the shell together.
As she watched the Dunkleosteus gnawing away at the ammonite, Lin suddenly had an idea.
Let's try attacking it. After all, it is the largest creature I've seen so far. Defeating it will be interesting.
Is it just for fun? There must be some other purpose …
Indeed, if Lin wanted to create a green carpet here, she must first determine the extent of the glowing threads in this area.
Lin did not care too much. She began to search for some useful units in Leviathan. She noticed that Leviathan rarely attacked creatures larger than itself. There was no need for that. In fact, a creature half the size of itself was enough to sustain itself for a long time. That was why Leviathan only had a few units that were used to drive away small creatures. There were no units that could directly attack large creatures.
Although evolution was not bad, sometimes it was too simplistic and not perfect.
With that in mind, Lin created a dozen Crushers and had them attack the outer skin of the Dunkleosteus.
Like other large creatures, the Dunkleosteus ignored the Crushers completely. It was only when the Crushers began to attack its outer skin that it reacted.
The Dunkleosteus twisted its body violently. The water current generated by its huge body instantly sent a few of the Crushers flying into the distance. They rolled several times before coming to a stop. Some of them even crashed into the glowing threads on the seabed.
The Dunkleosteus turned its head to look around, trying to find out what was attacking it. However, its eyesight did not seem to be able to discern a creature as small as the Crushers in the dim light of the seabed. Furthermore, it did not associate this attack with the distant Leviathan. So, it turned back and continued to devour the ammonite that it had not finished.
As expected, conventional tactics would not work against such a large creature. Should I use the Crushers? However, for some reason, Lin did not like to use poison. She preferred to destroy the enemy directly.
Lin ordered Leviathan to retrieve the Crushers.
Suddenly, a strange feeling appeared in Lin's mind. Some of the Crushers had returned, but some of them could not move. It was as if they were bound by something.
Lin released one of her eyeballs to look at the Smashers. She discovered that the Smashers were entangled by the glowing threads. The threads continued to grow on the Smashers' bodies until they formed a ball of glowing threads that completely surrounded them.
The Crushers did not have an eyeball, but Lin could feel that they were being dissolved. Starting from the outer skin, the cells were being killed off one by one, and finally the entire body.
Did these strange glowing threads have such an ability?
Lin was puzzled. Just as she was about to order Leviathan to take a closer look, a strong current suddenly came from nearby.
Leviathan immediately retreated at high speed. In the next moment, the Dunkleosteus' jaws slammed into Leviathan's original position.
She was almost bitten in half …
At that moment, the Dunkleosteus turned its head to bite again. However, it had lost its advantage. Lin ordered Leviathan to swim a dozen meters away at an even faster speed. Seeing that the Dunkleosteus did not catch up, Lin relaxed and observed what was going on.
Half of the ammonite had been eaten by the Dunkleosteus. The remaining half fell on the glowing threads on the seabed and was surrounded by them. The Dunkleosteus seemed to know the danger of the threads. It gave up on the ammonite and turned to attack Leviathan.
Although it moved slowly, the Dunkleosteus' sneak attack ability was very strong. It was only when it got close that Lin noticed the abnormality in the current. There was no smell at all. Lin had no idea how the Dunkleosteus got rid of the smell of ammonite organs in its mouth. Perhaps the smell was too strong in the water for Lin to notice.
Now, the Dunkleosteus seemed to know that it could not catch up to Leviathan. It had already eaten quite a lot, so it gave up on attacking and turned around to swim away.
Lin usually would not let any creature that attacked her go. However, if she killed the Dunkleosteus here, its carcass would fall to the seabed and be decomposed by the glowing threads. That would be pointless.
Compared to killing the monster that could crush Leviathan with a single bite, it was more interesting to study these threads.
Lin created a small troop with sharp pincers at the front. She had them cut off a small section of the glowing threads. Then, Lin used a spherical troop called the 'Research Sphere' to absorb the threads into her body. She then released a large number of cells and miniaturized troops into the sphere for research.
These threads … had a very simple structure. They had a layer of glowing cells as an outer layer and some muscle-like cells on the inside that allowed them to move.
In addition, they could extend a kind of tiny needle-like filaments from their body surface. They could release a strong dissolving fluid. The dissolving ability of this dissolving fluid was above any other dissolving fluid Lin had ever seen. They probably used these tiny needles to pierce into the body of other creatures, then disintegrate the organs of other creatures from the inside out.
These glowing threads were probably feeding on all kinds of debris. Was it because food was scarce that they were so crazy? Did they immediately surround anything that fell?
But … in this place, the surface of the sea was covered in ice while the seabed was dark and cold. Was there really enough food for these glowing threads to cover such a large area?
If there was, perhaps Lin could imitate them and create a new type of green carpet … Yes, the green carpet did not necessarily need to feed on light. Its main purpose was to collect large amounts of food in one place for a long period of time.
Then … let's give it a try.
