I am the illustrious hero, Raymond Bertson! I will grow to be powerful enough to slay the Demon Lord, and be loved throughout the empire for my great deeds! Or that was what the Emperor told me, at least.
When a child turns 8 in the Camen Empire they are brought before the church so that Identify magic can be used on them, and depending on their God-given class they are pushed towards a certain future. For me, when my class was discovered, I was sent out of my home town to the capital, where I met the Emperor and learnt of my new duty: To grow into the strongest human, and help win the war by slaying the Demon Lord.
The humans have been fighting the demons for centuries due to our beliefs. We believe that light magic is closer to the light god Irasil and dark magic, which is opposed to light magic, is closer to the devil Udos. As Udos is evil, those with dark magic are ostracized from human society and cast out, where as those with light magic are greatly favoured.
As a hero, my growth rate is abnormally high, and I can become very strong exceptionally quickly. After going to the capital I trained with the imperial knights and often fought magical beasts with them. I soon surpassed them all in stats, but my sword skills are still not as good as the knight captain. Believing that I had learned all that I could in a short amount of time, I gathered my equipment and left the capital. I then traveled around the Empire protecting towns and killing monsters. Once, I even slew a low tier dragon with the aid of some knights.
While traveling I heard that a small town called Malt had discovered a dragon living in a mountain range not to far from its outer walls. Dragons are known to often attack small towns on the edge of the Empire's territory, so they were rightfully scared. Hearing of this town's plight, I traveled there as fast as I could. I asked how to reach that dragon's lair, and found that it was called Payrontu of Sloth, as it had rarely been seen to leave its cave. Knowing this, I thought that the dragon must be old or sick, and I could probably defeat on my own, even if it was a higher tier dragon, as I had grown even stronger since my previous encounter with a dragon. I slept one night in town, then I set off into the forest before dawn.

This is the second time I've woken up here. A clearing on the edge of the forest, with a small stream running through. The dragon must have put me here, there is no other possibility. But that begs the question; why am I still alive? Searching the area, I discovered nothing had changed, and that I was safe. Going back to my previous train of thought, it could be that the dragon is trying to use me to draw other powerful humans to its lair to kill them, as I doubt anything in this forest would provide much in the way of challen- wait. I'm missing a piece of my armour! "I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU!!" I shouted to the empty air. This suit of armour was taken out from the palace treasury and gifted specifically to me by the Emperor! I would rip that dragon's claws out one by one while it was still alive! I would definitely make that useless lizard suffer! I got up off the forest floor and ran towards that dragon's cave, killing anything that got in my way.
After a few hours traveling, I finally arrived. I brandished my sword and ran at that damnable beast, screaming a war cry. I saw that it was trying to scratch me with its claws, so I swung up to intercept. My blade passed through its hand without resistance, and I was thrown off balance due to the lack of impact. Sensing something was wrong, I turned my head towards my foe, only to discover that its hand was still coming toward me unimpeded. Realizing I had swung too early, I cursed my rashness and used the rotation of my body to move out of the path of the dragon's attack, and position myself beside its wrist. Knowing that I could not miss this time, I swung downwards to sever its wrist. I admitted that I did not have the leeway in this fight to torture it slowly, which only made me more angry. I made sure to watch the path of my blade to ensure that it struck, but as I watched, the dragon's arm seemed to ripple, before reappearing outside the reach of my blade. I was again put off balance by the lack of impact, and I rolled forward, trying to keep moving while coming up with a solution to this problem. This dragon's main attack method must be using an illusion to distract its foe, then attacking from behind. This would explain my first encounter with this dragon - I couldn't even see it attacking before I was injured. It also explains the lack of an attack on Malt, as this battle method is very powerful in a 1v1 in an enclosed environment, but loses its advantage against multiple enemies. This means that my previous assessment was wrong, this dragon isn't probably isn't weakened or ill, and I could be in danger. But it is much too late to run away now! I should be able to ignore the mirage, and try to attack the real body, if I can find it. From this conclusion I didn't dodge the illusion's tail swipe, only to be flung part way across the cave, "What!?" I inadvertently shouted, I should not have been hit! Also, checking the amount of damage I took from that, I must have actually been hit by the dragon. There was no way a magical substitution could hurt me so much. I realized now that I was still underestimating this dragon. It could predict my next move very accurately and, if necessary, could layer its attacks on top of the illusion's appearance almost perfectly. No wonder it could rule over this forest with impunity. I had also sensed a presence moving around the cave, but it never came within the reach of my blade. It probably realized I had learnt what it was doing, and was trying to wait for a gap in my defenses before attacking, to make sure it was victorious. I had no doubt that its mana pool was bigger than mine, so if this battle of attrition went on, I would eventually lose. I needed to come up with something, and quickly too.
