The thunder of boots rang through the night. A dozen heavily armed soldiers rushed in, lanterns swinging, spears gleaming. Villagers cowered, but Lyrus advanced, each step amplifying his strength. Hellfire curled around his hands, casting flickering shadows.
Alyra darted along a rooftop, loosing arrows that found every chink in armor. Kael's voice, calm and clear, guided Lyrus. "Focus on their leader. Break them!"
The leader, a knight with a wolf's head crest, raised his spear high. He lunged at Lyrus. Their clash sparked against the dusty ground. With an earth-shaking blow, Lyrus smashed the spear's shaft and sent the knight stumbling backward.
A crossbowman aimed at Alyra, but Kael's warning came swift. She sidestepped, releasing an arrow that pinned the man's arm to a wooden beam. Another soldier tried to flank Lyrus, but the cultivator's fiery kick crumpled his armor like tin.
The knight, shaken and fearful, signaled retreat. Soldiers fled, leaving villagers sobbing with relief. Dawn's light crept over the rooftops as the trio stood victorious. Lyrus breathed hard, his body aflame with triumph and purpose. He had promised protection, and he had delivered—proving that his burning spirit would shape a new destiny.
