Chapter 48.
01. Reskeme was finally able to relax and just allow his mind to wander, He sat in his tent for all of 1 hour before deciding it was better to focus on something new to occupy his thoughts. He had needed to wait for his illusions to fade, It was good for him to finally relax for an hour and not do anything that was definitely what he needed. The ever-busy Reskeme was eager however to start the new spell, He had been constantly casting spells for a week and was sure he could channel enough mana now for a third layer maybe even a fourth. He decided not to get ahead of himself, Reskeme didn't have the faintest idea of how to start the fourth layer.
02. Reskeme focused himself and began channelling, he didn't care what colour he was using, he just channelled his illusion mana as his fire mana would be a bad idea. Reskeme stared at his feet creating a bowl under him followed by a second at the same time, He channelled harder feeling the burn as mana passed through his veins, the mana poured into two bubbles that slowly formed while the third layer of mana filled the gaps in between. Reskeme sealed the top of his first layer and covered it over with the second layer sealing in the third layer of mana.
03. He grumpily while he looked at the third layer noticing he closed the first layer too soon and didn't fill it completely. He could see the gaps in the mana of the third layer and knew this wasn't complete at all. Reskeme looked at his mana gauge, casting almost 30% of his mana in one spell wasn't pleasant, he needed 10% per layer, If he used less than that he could see gaps in the mana If he used more mana it was better but Reskeme felt that much wasn't needed. The tax on his body was much worse to channel for longer, He could only cast around 40% of his mana at once, Reskeme was confident he could after casting 30% without too much trouble.
04. Reskeme waited for a full two hours, he was impatiently waiting this entire time for his spells to fade, He could now see the benefit of casting the third layer. He was excited, now he could cast three layers and not need to worry about it for over two hours. Reskeme happily looked at his mana gauge, he wasn't sure how it worked but the mana gauge showed he had returned half the mana he had spent to cast the spell, recovering the mana over 2 hours. Reskeme was happy he could actually see how much mana he had as he now knew he could reliably cast three more layers without too many problems.
05. Reskeme Channeled his mana again, He shaped his first two layers of mana like an egg slowly building each layer until they halfway covered him, He filled in the gaps with the third layer until the outer layer finished making a complete covering over his head, He made sure to fill the gap completely and finished off the first layer. This was much more difficult to do than it sounded, all three spells were drawing mana and taxing him hard. Reskeme collapsed to the ground after channelling so much, he sweated profusely and panted. Doing it properly was difficult, he used as much mana as he could to make all three layers of his mana look thick without any holes.
06. Reskeme smiled happily and was smiling because he had completed the third layer of mana, He happily admired his new layer of mana. The mana looked odd it looked like flowing water under clear ice, the mana was oddly beautiful as it rapidly flowed in no particular direction. Unlike his first and second layers which were controlled to flow together. Reskeme wondered how the mana in the middle didn't mix and join his first or second layer, That was probably something he could ask the master mage when the man finally decided to wake up. The spell could no longer be seen, He couldn't channel mana for long periods of time, so seeing mana was only for when he was casting.
07. Reskeme did some javelin throwing practice on his old arch-nemesis, He threw the new spears the Darva had donated at the post that was clearly for hitching horses. Noone had complained at his antics soo he had continued practicing his improving aim. The new spears flew further than his other javelins, He even threw his naginata noticing that it was heavier and soo didn't fly near as far. He learned a few things while waiting for Kellar, One was that his naginata weight made it cause more damage to the pole, on the other hand, it was a much shorter range.
08. Kellar arrived after Reskeme had thoroughly tired both of his arms with throwing, He had practiced his throwing knives, he came to the conclusion that he needed to put runes on each one or he would be laughed at by most of his enemies. Reskeme wanted practice casting his flame runes on all of his knives but knew that Kellar would want him to have the mana for the practice later in the day. Reskeme was lazily sitting on the ground and resting while drinking and eating, he watched as the mage finally rounded a corner before catching his eye. The mage approached drinking from a cup of something steaming, Reskeme caught the strong smell of something odd but delicious-smelling on the wind.
09. Kellar walked up and Reskeme could tell the man was looking at his proudly created triple-layered spell. Kellar rubbed his chin, the man had changed into a dark black robe that covered his entire body with various symbols. The symbols looked embroidered in a thread of something extremely shiny and expensive-looking. The master mage was clasping his cup-like his life depended on it. Reskeme was shocked to notice that the symbols were different runes, He had seen only one and it was the flame rune. Kellar took a long drink of his beverage and smiled, he looked around reskeme presumably admiring the spells.
10. Kellar finally commented after walking around reskeme a few times and mumbling, He said," that's passable", seeing reskeme smiling and getting full of himself Kellar said," Now that you are done the easy part you can get onto the part that actually is challenging." Having his efforts put down so frankly Reskeme sighed and got ready for something difficult. Kellar created runes in the air at blinding speed and formed a barrier of fire in front of the startled Reskeme within 2 seconds. Reskeme could only faintly notice a line of runes in the air and on the ground form and connect to each other. It had been so fast he wouldn't have noticed it without being right in front of Kellar.
11. Reskeme was pale, Kellar said," form a line of runes out of mana in the air and on the ground. Channel mana through them and create the basic spell, by doing this you will get this wall of fire to block projectiles." Reskeme said," Ba Ba Basic spell?" Kellar laughed, he said," this is the easiest shield I can create, welcome to the high initiate ranks, if you learn this you will gain a low apprentice title." Reskeme wasn't sure why mages classified everything with a title, Kellar waited to drink his steaming drink and watched patiently as Reskeme stared at the barrier in fascination.
12. Reskeme Channelled mana, he created a single flame rune in the air and quickly moved to create one on the ground. The first rune fell apart unfinished and disappeared before becoming stable, Reskeme tried to fix his mistake only to realize the second rune had fallen apart when he lost focus. Kellar laughed, Reskeme turned on his foot and almost fell over at the sparks of fire dissipating in front of him, Kellar helpfully said, " you should probably make sure to charge each rune or when you stop actively keeping it stable it will fall apart."
13. Reskeme thought he understood, He created his first flame rune with a thin thread of mana, he simply thought of the shape and pushed the mana to fill it, to his surprise it actually worked. If reskeme would have been facing the Master mage he would have noticed the mage choke on his coffee when he saw what Reskeme had just done. Reskeme quickly filled the rune with mana and imprinted another beside it until he had 3 runes spaces a hand apart, He created three on the ground in a similar fashion and winced when he remembered the last time he had powered a rune. Reskeme pushed his dark green mana through each of the runes, his mana was pulled from all six runes at once until it connected and flowed upwards towards the first runes he had created.
14. Reskeme was clasping his knees and happily smiling at the barrier that could only cover half of his body. He admired his work, noticing that there were gaps of mana. Kellar stared silently and couldn't even muster words to speak for a few moments, He got back his wits and said," you need to put the runes closer together or something will pass in between the gaps in your wall. Reskeme said," That cost a lot of mana I'm sure it will be fine, Kellar skipped happily to the other side of the shield, he picked up some rocks. Before reskeme could do anything Kellar threw the rocks at him, the shield sparked with green fired deflecting the rocks and shattering them with a puff of fire.
15. Kellar put his back into throwing from ten steps away, one rock passed between the small gaps in the shield and struck Reskem on the leg. Reskeme cursed, Kellar said," oh did that hit you? I'm sorry I thought your shield was good." Kellar threw three more rocks and successfully hitting the gap again striking the now hiding Reskeme. Reskeme said," Alright! I will fix it, stop throwing rocks at me." Reskeme finally calmed down when Kellar stopped throwing rocks at him, He asked Kellar, "How long will the shield last?" Kellar replied," Oh probably an hour, if it gets hit the mana all focuses on the projectile until it is deflected away or consumed causing the shield to use mana at a very rapid pace until it disappears."
16. Reskeme said," So the more things the shield blocks the faster The shield will disappear, Kellar smiled He said," it appears you are not a complete imbecile after all." Reskeme checked his mana gauge and was happy to notice that his shield spell had only taken 5% of his overall mana. Reskeme wondered why this was the case, Reskeme decided to try again, He Channeled his mana feeling the burn and created 4 runes in the air with 4 on the ground trying to line them up as well as he could. The runes in the air were slightly above his head as he assumed that would be needed to properly protect him.
17. Each rune was the size of his palm lengthwise, he decided to make them bigger, He was assuming that would help him make a much bigger shield than before. Reskeme made sure to activate each rune as he slowly created each rune. Reskeme wanted to create more runes but was stopped when he felt the strain on his body getting too bad. The wall of mana shimmered green and created a clear green barrier of fire in front of him. Reskeme wiped off his head with the back of his hand and breathed deeply trying to get his breathing under control. He smiled and turned to Kellar, He asked the speechless mage," Soo does that mean I am now an apprentice mage? that wasn't too difficult."
18. Kellar smile and walked over to the other side of the shield, He placed his steaming mug on the ground and returned to standing behind Reskeme. Kellar said," how confident are you,? if your shield blocks 20 rocks in a row from hitting my mug of coffee I will give you 2 Silver coins, if it fails however you will need to do all the menial tasks I give you for a week.
