“Huh? You’re done?”
Madame Fon replied, turning back around after she had been arranging the item display as she waited for him.
“Yes. So, how much is it?”
That sentence, which could make every single merchant in the world smile, caused Madame Fon to quickly look at the computer screen behind her. She then turned around with a smile like she had just caught a big fish.
"This box is eight hundred fifty baht, but you registered an ID account with our shop yesterday, so you will be considered as having our store’s membership card already. Therefore, I’m going to round the number down to eight hundred, sounds good?”
No, that did not sound good at all!
Joke had never wasted this much money on things like this before in his life.
So right now, all that the young man could do was lie to himself that this was an investment and his future income would make up for it. At least eight hundred baht was a lot cheaper than other dragon decks. In the end, he finally sighed and nodded.
“Well, thank you so much, sir!” Madame Fon said cheerfully. “Hand me your ID card, I will register it for you."
All Joke could do was grab his ID slot out from his pocket disheartenedly before handing his black ID card over to the woman in front of him.
“Remember, no matter which card shop or CF you go to from now on, you can hand them this ID card to check your trading information more conveniently ‘cause I’ve just registered all of your trading information into the AOS system. Moreover, you could also collect points when trading cards and redeem rewards or use them as a discount for purchasing other items. And our store also has a promotion where you’ll receive a point for every five hundred baht spent. You are two hundred baht short for another star, so are you interested in any additional products? This protective card sleeve for example?”
When he heard that, Joke sighed gently before waving his hands lightly.
“I’m good—maybe next time.”
He was already wasting a lot more money than expected. At last, he pulled out a thousand-baht bill he had just withdrawn from the ATM this morning and handed it to the madame who was extremely good at selling him stuff. She let out a dissatisfied tsk before scanning the barcode on the item she just sold along with swiping Joke’s ID card to register the item on it.
“When you put these cards in your ID slot and take them online for the first time, it will automatically register the card into your account. The cards that have been tied to your account will work when it is inside your ID only. So, if you want to sell off any of these cards, you need to unlock the card’s registration information first… You can only do that at CF stores, I don’t have permission to access those systems.”
"Okay." Joke nodded understandably. "If so, can I please use the online device?"
"Of course!" Madame Fon beamed ear to ear. “The rent for the device in a single room is one hundred baht an hour."
Joke suddenly froze. He completely forgot that there was also a fee to use that device because he went online for free for four hours yesterday due to the new user registration promotion—and he had already used up all of that time limit.
“We are currently running a promotion: four-hour rent for only three hundred baht, sir,” said Madame Fon as she swiped a black and white card with the word “online” on it. “Hand this card to the employee at our Online Center on the third floor and he will then lead you to your room. And on your way back, please don’t forget to bring this card down to the counter to make your payment because I have already registered it with your ID card.”
After speaking, Madame Fon handed him back the online card along with his ID card, to which Joke accepted it disheartenedly. This meant that there was now a planned schedule: he had to spend the whole four hours playing to make it worth every baht he spent. He then sighed before starting to walk up to the mentioned Online Center.
"Wait a minute, sir."
But it looked like the shopkeeper was not yet finished. She interrupted him in such an overly sweet voice, causing Joke to curl his lip.
“Are you interested in taking on some quests, Sir? I remember you mentioned wanting to try out some quests?”
No matter what he wanted to do, there seemed to be expenses everywhere!
It looked like his “investment” cost was gradually increasing to the point where he was starting to become disheartened.
“Alright. So, what are my quest options?”
“Here you go—novice quests for new players. The rewards include a Beginner Pack and a Chaser Pack. Do you want to try out around three quests on your first day?”
“And about the fee....”
“I’ll give you a special price, only one hundred baht for three quests!”
What an impressive one-stop service. In the end, Joke nodded his head obligingly as taking on quests was something he wanted to try out most. He was curious about how much money he could make in his first few days.
“Screw it… having instant noodles for a few days might help save some money.”
Joke muttered softly, not wanting anyone to hear what he just said. Madame Fon then took his ID card to register for the quests before handing it back to him with quest cards similar to the one Rin received yesterday with a wide grin.
“When completing these quests, sir, insert these quest cards into the quest slot at the back of your ID slot—right here.” She then pointed at the mentioned spot. “There is also an expiration to each quest. If you are not able to complete it under the given time limit, the quest will be automatically canceled.”
“And what will happen to the quest registration fee I paid?”
“Straight into my pocket, of course. What a funny question.”
After saying that, she then beamed ear to ear in a way that caused Joke to let out another deep breath. He could now see how she had been able to run this business in a great location right in the heart of the city. It was not surprising that the store was doing extremely well because even a new customer like him had already spent god knew how much under an extremely short amount of time he had set foot inside this store.
“Hope you have a great time with AOS, sir!”
Madame Fon signaled him to go upstairs to begin his game.
“Oh! And our store does not allow food or animals inside. However, if you want something to eat, I recommend Auntie Jaew’s food stall next door—both cheap and tasty.”
“As if I still have money left to eat…”
Joke murmured to himself before walking past the counter. He then looked up towards the stairs leading up to the rooms used for going online into the world of Arcadia. It was unbeknownst to him why these stairs now seemed to be looking so tall.
“I hope I made the right decision.”
