"Emily! Emily! Get up! Hurry! There's a fire, we need to leave now!"
Emily couldn't bear the feeling that her home was gone. Her last memory of her parents was there, as were the last ten years. Her sweet sixteen party, prom, graduation, all gone. Every last memory went up in flames.
"What are we going to do now? I mean we have no home, no clothes, no money. H-how are we even going to pay for a proper funeral?"
"I *hic*, I got the letter from the embalmer that they couldn't *hic* do anything about his appearance. They cant *hic* you can't... You won't get to say goodbye..."
"Hello, dear. I was waiting for you...We need to talk about the funeral service."
"I've had years to say goodbye. It's okay." She was fiddling with her wedding band.
"Okay... Well then I don't think that we should have a formal funeral. What I suggest we do is go to the church for a service, then to the cemetery. There we can have an informal funeral. People can speak about him, mourn with each other, etc. there. You can even do a eulogy Grandma."
"That is quite a good idea... Except the last part. I think that you should give the speech. You are far better with words than I am. Besides, I'll be a mess the whole time."
"Really? M-me?" A few tears began rolling down her sun kissed cheeks.
"I can't think of anyone better." She smiled.
In the months after her grandfather's funeral, Emily was a mess to put it plainly. She didn't sleep for weeks at a time, she was falling behind on her studies, and most of her apartment bills overdue.
She didn't manage to get a job, with all of her sleep deprivation and anxiety, so her grandmother had been paying for her living space. And so because of this, Emily lives with her grandma.
It took Emily four months of this before she realized what was wrong with her new lifestyle.
"Gram?" She stood on top of her cot, and kneeled on the bed where her grandmother lay. "Grandma? Wake up...It's morning."
Still nothing.
"Gram, wake up this isn't funny!" She was now leaning over her grandmother, attempting to shake her awake.
"E-Emily?", her grandmother said groggily. "What are you doing, trying to kill me?" She chuckled slightly as she rubbed her eyes.
"Oh thank God..." Emily said as she breathed a sigh of relief. "I kind of thought that you weren't going to wake up."
"Aw honey." Her grandma said in a lowered voice.
"But you did. That-that's what's important.*chuckle* You're good." She sat on her knees and brushed her frizzy morning hair out of her face.
"Em?" Her grandmother asked.
"Hm?"
"Maybe...Maybe you should go see someone. You know, to talk to?" She looked at Emily with a familiar expression on her face.
"You-you're serious. You think I need to see a therapist?"
"Hello?" She said after knocking on the door 3 times.
"Come in." A soft voice said through the door. "Hi, Emily Mandozas?" it said.
"Y-yes. I'm Emily. Nice to meet you, Dr. Pertana." she replied.
"Oh." She chuckled as she looked down in her lap. "That's not my name. I intern for him. My name's Chloe Sanders. Well, you should probably call me doctor, but if 'Chloe' makes you more comfortable..." She smiled.
"Alright...Chloe."
The session continued on for the next 40 minutes. Then, within the next few weeks, Emily had asked for more and more sessions.
"Hey, um," Emily began(she had just finished a therapy session and was on her way out of the office. " I know this sounds unprofessional, but, do you wanna hang out sometime? Maybe go out to eat do something fun?"
"Like a date?"
"No, no. Not a date. As friends."
"What the hell?" She whispered to herself. "Calm down, it's nothing. I'm sure I'm just sick." She thought.
"Are you kidding? Even if you did gain any weight from these, you'd still look perfect." She blushed and didn't even realize it.
"Thanks... You're not to bad yourself." When Chloe said this Emily got even more red. She looked up from the table and met Chloe's gaze. She began to look over her face. "What? Is there something on my face?"
"Nothing." She looked back down at the table, then glanced quickly at Chloe, who had just gone back to enjoying her food.
"Hey, can I ask you a question?"
"Sure" They were both under the same blanket, and were sharing a large bowl of popcorn.
"Are..." She felt her cheeks redden. "Are you single?"
"Be-before we eat, can I try something?" Her eyes scanned Chloe's face slowly, but not judgmentally.
"That entirely depends on what you want to try. I have-mm! Mmmmm."
Chloe sounded startled, then content, as Emily's warm lips met hers.
"What was that?" She backed her head away from Emily's, but kept her hands in place.
"I-I don't know. I'm sorry." She blushed as she removed her hands from Chloe's neck and spun herself around so that her back was to Chloe, and so that Chloe's arms were no longer around Emily's waist.
"It's okay." She replied after a short pause. "It's just...When you said that you wanted to try something I thought you meant like, blueberry syrup." They both chuckled softly.
"Either way..." Chloe blushed, "that was way better than blueberry syrup."
"Whoop-dee-doo. I'm 19."
Sorry about the long reacp, just wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Hope you enjoy season 2 of Acceptance!
