Chapitre 24: Modifying the ship after half a day of 'rest'

Making her way through some alleyways and small streets in a completely random pattern, Mizuki soon found an old church-like building.

Surrounded by a poorly made stone wall and a few apple trees, Mizuki didn't bother walking near the place.

She took a seat on the front wall with no hesitation in her eyes, took her violin from the strap on her back that she had made with [Create] back in her room, and started playing the themesong of a certain pirate movie franchise.

Modifying a few of the lines in her mind and putting it into practice, she was soon playing a completely original piece that only had a hint of the previous theme in it.

Finishing the song, Mizuki was pleasantly smiling behind her mask with her eyes closed while thinking of the next song to play.

Picking the song that she heard through her headphones back when she beat up that weird group of assassins after leaving the dungeon, she took a deep breath and started playing while humming the words. It's not like she's going to start singing here now is she?

"Mmm mh, m m m, m mh m mh-"

Before she could continue, a silent and shy voice came from behind her.

"Um. E- excuse me."

'*sigh* I hoped that the orphans would just be told to stay indoors and listen nicely not come and talk to me.'

Looking behind her and making eye contact with a short boy with brown hair and black eyes, Mizuki blinked as she had thought of him as a girl for a good few seconds.

'What a bother.'

...

My name in this world is Will. My last life was that of an orphan, scavenging for food and a roof to place over my head was just my daily life, my very, very horrible daily life.

I was extorted out of every penny I made from throwing my pride aside and begging in the streets.

The grown ups always took things from others and yet they were the ones who got donations just because they forced us to sit near them, making it seem like we were family.

It disgusted me.

I never had parents so I didn't know much about right and wrong.

I was more worried about myself to take anyone under my wing.

When the other kids in the street offered to form a group and steal the resources of the grown ups, I declined.

The idiots thought that they could do it just because there were more of them.

Although we were all born and raised on the streets, I still felt superior to these idiotic mongrels.

I told the grown ups of their plan.

All the kids in the group were silenced, some sold while others just went *poof*.

I got a few pieces of bread for that. It was the best meal I had had in a while.

Survival of the fittest is not a correct statement. It's rather simple really.

Those who know what side to choose are the survivors while the outcasts who have nothing to bring to the table are doomed the moment of their birth.

But just because I know what side to choose doesn't mean I'll stay on that side.

It took many days, but the grown ups started to welcome me and stop extorting me. They told me I was born with a good head on my shoulders.

A head that they had messed up.

At night I slit all of their throughts. Their annoying thrashing around woke two up who tried to kill me.

I threw a knife in one of their eyes and ran after the other tried to close in on me.

I was told one thing about life outside the streets. Cars flashing blue and red kill on sight.

I ran to a main street, it was late and dark out. The grown up was still following.

All part of my plan.

I ran towards a car that frequently flashed red and blue and yelled..

"Murderer!"

Two people quickly exited the vehicle and closed in on me. I did not know if I was going to survive, but I didn't mind giving my life to kill people I disliked.

They ran past me and pointed a black object towards the man who had just passed the corner, following me.

Next all I heard was the word 'Freeze' and multiple small explosions.

I looked back to see thr man with multiple holes in him, covered in blood. Both his and and the ones I killed.

In fear of becoming like him, I ran to the vehicle. I have noticed that it can only move if someone is inside it.

I entered and looked for a start switch or button or anything. Seeing two switches below a wheel, I tried to pull, then push.

Then..

*Crash*

The moving vehicle drove into something. I do not know what it was but I do remember the pain in my neck after the loud crashing sound.

After a few very long moments in darkness where there was no noise, color or smell of any kind. I woke up.

I was.. a little shorter, my skin was white like some of the grown ups and hair was now brown instead of black.

Suddenly I had a wave of.. memories.

'My name is Will, and I'm an orphan.'

Was that place a dream? I did not know and chose to try to forget it.

I had been living here for years, I learned right from left and left from wrong if I remember correctly.

I learned of magic and the kindness of the workers called 'sisters' and learned reading and writing.

There were others besides me in the church but they just came and went. Grown ups frequently came to take children away.

It's not like I was attatched to them, I didn't even know their names so it just wasn't my problem. That is what I thought to myself.

But after a few more years it got.. lonely.

The sisters say I was going to be very 'hand some' when I grow up. Not that I know the meaning of that phrase.

I mostly just read and re-read books at 'home' as the sisters called it.

One day I woke up from my sleep below an apple tree at the corner of the home, after hearing a melody.

It was exiting. Maybe it was a new sister who came home. I thought.

Walking to the front of the home I saw a girl sitting on the stone wall, making music with a strange piece of wood.

I approached and tried to make conversation but at the same time I didn't want to disturb her playing so I waited for her to stop so we could talk.

After she stopped playing she took a deep breath in and was going to start playing again.

This time I heard humming, a beautiful and charming voice came from her accompaning the melody.

I was tranced for a few moments before trying to talk to her, just before she could fully start the song.

"Um. E- excuse me."

I did indeed 'stutter' as the sisters call it. For some reason I felt embarrassed.

The girl turned around and looked me in the eyes. It was like a gem placed in casing.

Her night sky resembling eyes and the mostly grey clothes she wore were a stark contrast.

She stood up, placed her strange wooden item on the wall and leaned closer. She was a few inches taller than me.

We were on opposite sides of the wall.

"Yes?"

I heard.

"U-um are you.. perhaps a new sister."

I said while I could feel the sides of my face warming up. Strangely I felt slightly pressured under her gaze. Like a commoner in the presence of royalty.

"No. I am merely practicing my music skills."

Hearing that she was not a new sister, I grew slightly sad.

"Why here then?"

"Not many people around, are there?"

Looking around the area, I only spotted a sister staring consearningly out of a window towards us.

"Ah right, c-can I know your name."

"Nope. You can just call me sister or whatever."

"...onee-san?"

"?"

Onee-sans' eyes widened and one of her eyebrows raised as I said it.

I heard it being said between some of the children in the dream meaning sister, but I wanted to distinguish her from the other sisters at home so this is the best I could come up with.

"Huh. Interesting. Sure, you can call me that. I'll just call you by your name then.."

She cut off before I could finish.

'I guess I'll just call her Onee-san then since she seems to like it.'

"My name i-"

"I know, Will right?"

"!?"

'How?'

"Anyway Will, it seems our conversation ends here, I have a few places to be and a few stares from the church are bothering me so I'll take my leave first."

"Church?"

"Your home, duh. Cya."

"Oh. Bye! Come by again some time to play music if you want to!"

Without turning back, Onee-san waved and turned the corner.

...

'Very, very interesting. A possibility for other people to be from earth. I might have to look into this sometime in the future.'

'Probably when I have some free time on the open seas.'

'Better remember that name too, Will. His aura was very unique. Like an unmoving, pitch black void.'

'I feel like he has a lot of potential. Might just come back after a few years and get myself either a helpful aid or if he keeps his looks might just get a husband. Just kidding~. Seems like a few of the church girls already have an eye on him.'

Throwing the thought to the back of her mind, Mizuki took a more serious thought line and started thinking.

'Now. I've used most of my free time... effectively? Yeah. So the rest of the day I could... Ah! I can modify the ship now so I don't have to do it later or while running away from guards.'

Heading back to her inn suprisingly fast, Mizuki took out her bottled ship uncorked it made a pair of tweezers and tried explored the ship using them to feel everything out.

Although the curse remained unknown, what Mizuki did find was that the capistan, cannons, wheel and sails were pretty old and could use a refresher.

Making an attempt to remove a cannon from the main deck and place it on the table, Mizuki was stopped.

Before the cannon could be brought off the ship, a green barrier appeared and stopped its advance, melting the tweezers in two along with moving the canon back to it's original place.

Mizuki frowned seeing this. She made a new pair of tweezers and tried the same with another cannon.

The result did not change.

Mizuki soon had tried to remove the cannons enough times to map out the entirety of the barrier in her mind and on paper.

The barrier was oval shaped and covered almost all of the ship exept the top half of the sails and mast and a very small area on the back of the ship near the wheel of the ship.

Making an educated guess that nothing belonging to the ship can be removed from it, Mizuki started to worry slightly as a crew is counted part of a ship in most situations.

Although nothing can be removed from the ship, things can still be added.

Mizuki then made multiple small cannon balls, basically small metal marbles and placed them on the ship.

Seeing them pass the barrier threshold, Mizuki dawned a slight smile as she started her experimenting.
