Chapitre 2: First Steps 2

Just two minutes later, I found myself standing on the deck, formed up into a single line of twenty, with nineteen other similarly dressed soldiers, all Fire Benders. And I got my first look at Princess Azula.

She was beautiful, there was no defying it. Her hair was immaculate, sleek and shiny despite the ebony black colouring that seemed to soak in the light from around it. Her feature were pointed and graceful. A sharp beauty, reminiscent of a hawk. Though, I could do without the gaudy lipstick personally, she'd looked way better without it.

She prowled up and down the deck, walking by us one by one, eyeing us intently, examining us stoically. It was just a good thing the standard fire bender armour had a white, skull-like face guard that totally hid my face, otherwise she'd see me rolling my eyes at her theatrics.

Princess Azula – Level 48

If I focused on her, I could see an indicator above her head with her name and level, but that was all. Unlike all those gamer stories I read, it seemed I didn't get an observation type skill that let me know their health points and stats and such. Disappointing.

(That is because, while you may have the body of a video game character thanks to this system, no other does. The level you see, is only a generalisation of their overall combat ability and threat level, it does not reflect 'stats' in the same way your level roughly does.)

I resisted the urge to wave away the screen that appeared in front of me. It would draw Azula's attention. But, that was good to know.

'When can I change worlds?' I idly asked mentally, while Azula continued prowling. May as well get something done while she took the time to grand stand and try and intimidate us all.

(You can change worlds whenever you please. And once you do, time will be frozen in the worlds left behind at the moment you let. But, to earn perk points you must accomplish feats worth recognising. Otherwise, for instance, if you decided to leave this world to go to the Naruto universe, you would be unable to purchase chakra without perk points, and would thus have to find avenues to gain chakra within the Naruto world, of which there is very few.)

That was disappointing to find out. But, it also cleared something up for me. I can't just bunny hop between worlds and grab up a bunch of power ups. For instance, I couldn't jump over to Naruto to get chakra which passively enhances the physical abilities of any who have it, or get Aura from Rwby to shield me then jump right back here kitted out to steam roll everything.

"I must admit, I find myself disappointed in you lot," Azula finally spoke up as she made her way back to the centre of the group, coincidentally, directly opposite me, "As pathetically weak as my brother is in comparison to myself, he's still easily worth ten of you weaklings, and my Uncle, fat tea obsessed fuddy duddy that he is, is still the Dragon of The West."

I could clearly see her golden eyes rove over us all, and felt a bunch of the others make nervous sounds, her plump lipstick clad lips pulled up into a sneer, "I'll defeat my uncle of course, but it will take at least some effort, I can't have my brother ganging up on me with him," she continued, "Right now, it's your chance to show me, your princess your worth. Now, fight, show me your skills."

Quest Gained!

Azula wants to see how your skills as a fighter and fire bender measure up. Fight and defeat as many of your fellow soldiers as possible.

Objective: Be the last man standing.

Hidden Objective: ???

For a moment, none of us moved. I myself being distracted by the sudden quest screen appearing before me.

"Well!?" Azula demanded sharply, crossing her arms together in front of her chest and idly tapping her long nails along her forearm, "I've not got all day, get to it!"

That was enough to snap me into action. Before any of the others could react, I grabbed my curved red sword on my back and swept out my leg, sweeping the soldier to my right at the knees and kicking him off his feet. As he fell, with a panicked yelp I brought my sword down hard, smashing the pommel into the side of his helmet and slamming him head first into the metal floor of the deck hard, his helmet crumpling from the force of my blow.

There was a mass of panicked yelps and shouts as everything devolved into chaos. Fire flying all ways as everyone began going at one another.

I turned to my left, to face the other guy beside me just in time to see him thrust out his fist, launching a fireball in my direction. Thrusting my own fist out, I fired a fireball of my own, meeting it head on and both exploding into small embers.

I jerked to the side then, avoiding as he kicked an arc of flame my way, there was a groan of pain as it slammed into someone behind me, but I ignored them and darted forward, fire forming around my fist as I darted towards my opponent and slammed a punch into the side of his helmet, only then releasing my flame punch sending him soaring through the air with a pained shout.

I continued on my left, noting that, of that were on my left side, only three remained. Two of them, turned together and blasted the third with a barrage of fire balls that brought him down and turned to teach other.

They squared up, and weren't paying attention as I bolted forward, jumping into the air behind the one closest to me, my leg erupting into flame as I slammed my knee enhanced with flaming explosive force into the back of his helmeted head and dropped him hard, his helmet making a loud 'dong' noise as it slammed into the metal deck.

(Fire Bender Soldier Defeated! Gained: 30 Experience Points.)

(You have levelled up!)

I ignored the notifications.

"Wha-?!" the other let out a startled shout, but only had time to bring his guard up before I was rushing him. I launched a fire ball at his face with a quick jab, and he thrust out his guard, blocking it and parting the flames around him.

I threw my sword at him, and he hastily ducked under it, giving me enough time to get in range, my fists covered in flame once more.

A jab covered in flame slammed into his helmet and stung my knuckles. The force of my blow sent him reeling, right into my left fist that slammed true just like my right before it. My left stung like my right.

With an enraged shout, my opponent thrust both arms out even as he stumbled from my hits, launching a large double handed combined flame stream at my head.

I ducked under it. With Dragon Blooded I had fifty percent resistance to all elements including fire, and with Sozin Style Fire Bending, I got another twenty percent resistance to the fire element. All in, a seventy percent resistance, yet I still don't feel like copping a massive stream of fire to the face.

Now ducked below, I covered my right in fire again and shot up, driving an uppercut into the bottom of his helmet, unleashing the fire in my blow. Combined, they sent him flying right up five feet in the air before he fell limp.

(Fire Bender Soldier Defeated! Gained: 30 Experience Points.)

Panting a bit, I thought, 'Status.'

Huh, I can see the experience I need to level up now. Shaking my head, I put it out of mine as I picked up my red dao blade and turned to my right, to see what was going on with all the other soldiers.

'Most of them are already down.' I noted. While I was busy, the ones on my right had fallen a small group of four, fighting amongst themselves. They weren't paying attention to me at all.

With a grin hidden behind my helmet, I sheathed my sword on my back. And then I clenched my fists and concentrated my chi to my fists. I drew them back and then together, thrust my hands forward, launching a pair of large flame streams that combined into one huge stream of red hot flames that roared across the deck.

It swept over and ploughed into all four of them, the explosive force and heat behind the blast sending them flying. I cut it off as soon as it hit though, I didn't want to kill them. When I did, I noticed all four of them laying in a tangled heap, moaning and groaning in pain.

You have Levelled up!

I stood there for a moment, getting my breath back. The sound of clapping made me turn my head to the centre of the deck to see Azula smiling and clapping her pale skinned hands together in applause, "Well done, well done, at least one of you seem a bit useful," the girl snorted. She stopped clapping and made her way over, her steps measured and graceful, like a big hunting cat, "Take off your helmet, and tell me your name." she demanded.

I withheld a sigh. But did as ordered reaching up and lifting my helmet off, holding it on the crook of one arm, "My name is Zan, your highness." I dipped my in a small bow to her. That was all she was getting though. I'm not taking a knee to bow to her that's for sure.

Still, despite not giving her the full formality, she merely quirked one finely plucked black eyebrow at me, "Zan, that is a good name," she hummed, cupping her chin, "It means Defending Men, does it not? Fitting for one of my guards I suppose."

I kept silent. Honestly, I just wanted to check my status again and spend my points.

"Moving on, you impressed me a bit Zan," Azula smiled at me, as she took her place in front of me and stared up into my eyes, "You didn't hesitate at all, and attacked with a brutal ferocity I find myself liking."

Honestly, I don't know why I felt no hesitation to attack. I've felt strangely calm since I arrived here. I've not lost my emotions, I know that since I've been excited over my abilities and irritated at being called out here by this little princess.

(You have the body of a game character. That includes the mind. Have you ever seen a gamer character hesitate outside of clip scenes or the like? The same rings true for you, the system itself keeps your mental health at the peak of operation, protecting you from mental base illnesses, attacks and other detrimental effects to your mind such as crippling fear and panic.)

Ah, that made sense. And that was honestly amazing itself. That meant my crippling fear of heights would be gone as well.

(It does indeed user!)
