Chapter 10: Rumors and Reality
The safe house buzzed with the subtle energy of a team slowly coming together. Caroline paced by the windows, her sharp eyes scanning the street outside. Stefan was seated in an old armchair, lost in thought, while Josh and Stiles were locked in yet another round of sarcastic banter in the kitchen.
Adam sat at the dining table, reviewing his system notifications. The "Rumor Tracker" ability had been a mixed bag so far, but it was their best lead generator.
<System Alert: New Rumor Unlocked.>
<Rumor: A string of disappearances in a small Tennessee town is being attributed to a rogue dryad. Investigate further.>
Adam frowned, the information sparking both curiosity and concern. He had hoped for a brief reprieve after the intense emotions of the Mikaelson reunion, but it seemed the supernatural world had other plans.
Elijah approached, his movements as graceful as ever. "You've found something."
Adam nodded. "Rumor of a dryad causing trouble in Tennessee. It's vague, but it's worth checking out."
Elijah inclined his head. "A dryad is a rare adversary. If this rumor holds merit, it could prove... challenging."
"It's not just the dryad I'm worried about," Adam admitted. "It's what else might be lurking nearby. These things never come alone."
Caroline stopped pacing and joined them, her arms crossed. "Tennessee, huh? Sounds like fun. Stefan and I could use a road trip."
Stiles, overhearing from the kitchen, popped his head around the corner. "A dryad? As in, tree spirits that are supposed to be peaceful? What's this one doing, auditioning for a horror movie?"
Josh followed, holding a mug of coffee. "Maybe it got sick of tourists carving their initials into trees."
Adam smirked. "Whatever it is, we need to stop it. Everyone, pack your bags. We leave in the morning."
The drive to Tennessee was long but surprisingly peaceful. Stiles filled the time with endless commentary, much to Elijah's thinly veiled irritation.
"Think about it," Stiles was saying. "Dryads could totally run a theme park. Like, 'Nature's Revenge.' You plant a tree, it comes to life, and wham! You're part of the ride."
"Your imagination knows no bounds," Elijah said dryly.
Josh chuckled from the back seat. "You're just mad because you didn't think of it first."
Adam, focused on the road, couldn't help but smile at their banter. Despite their differences, the team was starting to feel like a unit—a dysfunctional, chaotic unit, but a unit nonetheless.
The small town of Ash Hollow was tucked into the foothills of Tennessee's Smoky Mountains. It had the kind of quiet charm that belied the tension simmering beneath its surface. Adam's team parked just outside the town square, taking in their surroundings.
Caroline scanned the area. "It's too quiet."
Stefan nodded. "Something's definitely off."
Adam activated the Rumor Tracker, hoping for additional insight.
<System Alert: Rumor Refinement in Progress.>
<Rumor Update: The dryad is targeting those who disturb the ancient woods on the town's outskirts. Recent victims include local hikers and forestry workers. Proceed with caution.>
He shared the update with the group, his expression grim. "Looks like our target is somewhere in the woods. We'll split into two teams. Caroline and Stefan, you'll cover the northern trails. Elijah and I will take the south. Stiles and Josh, you're on lookout here in town."
Stiles raised a hand. "Question. What happens if we see something supernatural?"
"Run," Elijah said flatly, earning a snort from Josh.
"Great. Love the confidence," Stiles muttered.
Adam and Elijah trekked through the southern trails, the dense forest around them alive with the sounds of nature. But there was an underlying stillness that set Adam on edge.
"What do you make of this?" Adam asked quietly.
Elijah paused, his sharp eyes scanning their surroundings. "The forest feels... unnatural. As though it's watching us."
Adam nodded. "Good. I thought it was just me."
Suddenly, a low rustling sound came from their left. Both men turned, their senses on high alert.
"Elijah," Adam whispered. "Do you see that?"
A faint glow pulsed through the trees, moving as though it had a mind of its own. It was beautiful, almost hypnotic, but Adam knew better than to let his guard down.
"It's her," Elijah said, his voice low. "The dryad."
The glowing figure emerged from the shadows, her form ethereal yet imposing. Her eyes were like molten gold, and her hair seemed to merge with the branches around her.
"You dare disturb my forest?" she hissed, her voice carrying the weight of the woods themselves.
Adam stepped forward cautiously. "We're not here to harm you. We just want to understand what's happening."
The dryad's eyes narrowed. "Lies. You mortals only take and destroy."
As the tension in the air thickened, Adam prepared to use his Copy and Cut System. He couldn't afford to underestimate this opponent.
"Elijah," he murmured, "stay close."
The dryad's glowing form shifted, her branches extending like claws. It was clear that she wasn't interested in talking.
"Looks like she's not in the mood for negotiations," Adam muttered.
Elijah smirked faintly, his stance ready. "Then we do what must be done."
The battle had begun.
