Chapitre 63: Shadows in the Dark

The mansion was eerily quiet as I woke the next morning. It wasn't the peaceful kind of silence; it was tense, almost suffocating, as though the house itself was holding its breath. Dante was gone when I stirred, and though I tried not to let it bother me, the emptiness beside me only added to my unease.

After last night's revelations, the trust between us and everyone around us felt fragile, like glass on the verge of shattering. I threw on a silk robe and made my way downstairs, my steps soft against the marble floors. Matteo's voice carried from Dante's study, sharp and insistent.

"Maria isn't working alone," he was saying. "We're chasing shadows if we think she is."

Dante's response was quieter, almost too low to hear. I leaned closer to the door.

"We'll deal with it," he said firmly. "One threat at a time."

The sound of footsteps made me retreat, slipping back into the shadows before Matteo emerged. His expression was grim, his usual smirk replaced by a mask of stone. He barely acknowledged me as he strode past, and I hesitated before pushing the door open to face Dante.

A Deadly Plan

Dante was seated at his desk, the morning light spilling over his broad shoulders. He looked up when I entered, his sharp eyes softening just slightly at the sight of me.

"You're up early," he said.

"I couldn't sleep," I admitted, stepping closer. "What's going on?"

He leaned back in his chair, the tension in his posture impossible to miss. "We've confirmed the meeting location for Maria's informant. It's happening tomorrow night."

"And?"

"And we're going to be there," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument.

I folded my arms. "You're walking into a trap."

"I'm aware," he said, standing and moving toward me. "But it's a risk we have to take. If we can get to her informant, we might be able to dismantle her network from the inside."

I frowned, the idea of Dante putting himself in harm's way sitting uneasily with me. "You're not going alone, are you?"

"Of course not," he said, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "But Elizabeth, you need to trust me on this. I know what I'm doing."

"Do you?" I challenged, my voice rising. "Because from where I'm standing, it feels like Maria's been one step ahead of us this entire time."

His jaw tightened, the flash of vulnerability in his eyes quickly replaced by his usual stoic demeanor. "She won't win," he said firmly. "I won't let her."

Preparations

The rest of the day was a blur of activity. Dante's men were on high alert, preparing for the mission ahead. Matteo was barking orders, coordinating teams, and reviewing every possible contingency.

I felt useless amidst the chaos, a spectator in a world that was spinning out of control. But I couldn't just sit back and watch.

While Dante was busy with his men, I retreated to the library, determined to make sense of the notes I'd scribbled the night before. There had to be a pattern to Maria's movements—something we were missing.

Hours passed as I poured over the information, my mind racing. The ambushes, the betrayals, the sudden rise in her attacks—it wasn't random. Maria was playing a long game, and every move she made was calculated to weaken Dante's position.

But there was something else, something nagging at the edge of my thoughts. A connection I couldn't quite see.

The sound of footsteps interrupted my thoughts, and I looked up to see Matteo leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed.

"Planning on sharing whatever you're working on?" he asked, his tone light but his eyes serious.

I hesitated before nodding. "I'm trying to figure out Maria's strategy. There's a pattern to her attacks, but I can't quite piece it together."

He stepped inside, glancing over the papers spread across the desk. "You're not wrong," he said after a moment. "Maria doesn't do anything without a reason. But figuring out her endgame? That's a whole different beast."

"Do you think we'll catch the informant tomorrow?" I asked.

Matteo's expression darkened. "We have to. If we don't, this war is going to get a lot bloodier."

A Night of Truths

That evening, as the mansion settled into uneasy quiet, Dante found me in the library. He looked exhausted, the weight of the day etched into his features.

"I should've known I'd find you here," he said, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips.

I set my pen down and met his gaze. "I can't stop thinking about Maria. She's always one step ahead of us. It's like she knows what we're going to do before we do it."

Dante sighed, sitting beside me. "She has someone feeding her information. Until we flush them out, she'll keep gaining ground."

I reached for his hand, my fingers brushing against his. "Be careful tomorrow, Dante. I can't lose you."

His grip tightened around mine, and for a moment, the weight of his world seemed to slip away. "You won't," he said softly. "I promise."

But even as he said the words, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to go very, very wrong.

The Calm Before the Storm

The next morning came quickly, the air thick with tension as Dante's men gathered for the mission. I watched from the balcony as they prepared to leave, my heart pounding in my chest.

Dante glanced up at me before climbing into the car, his gaze lingering for a moment before he disappeared from view.

As the convoy pulled away, I couldn't shake the sense of foreboding that settled over me. Maria was out there, waiting. And Dante was walking straight into her trap.

I just prayed we'd be ready for whatever came next.
