After defeating Kabuto's shadow clone, Kirito turned his attention back to the purple barrier surrounding the Hokage viewing platform.
Inside the barrier, the battle had reached its climax. The Third Hokage had managed to seal the souls of the First and Second Hokage, lifting their reanimation. Orochimaru, however, was locked in a life-or-death struggle as Hiruzen fought to sever his soul.
The barrier was now overgrown with trees from the First Hokage's Wood Release. The intense battle had turned the space into a forest of destruction.
"How's the Third Hokage doing?" TenTen asked, watching the hazy figures within the barrier.
Kirito activated his Byakugan to observe the scene. "The Third Hokage is ready to sacrifice himself to seal Orochimaru, but it's a stalemate right now."
TenTen clasped her hands together, silently praying for Hiruzen.
Kirito scanned the village with his Byakugan. Most of the civilians had been evacuated, and ninjas were now fully engaged in battle. The chaos was widespread, but manageable.
With a determined look, Kirito leaped from the auditorium, landing in the arena below.
The battle between Konoha's forces, led by Genma Shiranui, and the Sand Village ninjas, led by Baki, had paused as both sides noticed Kirito's presence.
The Sand ninja immediately tensed, wary of the powerful Konoha shinobi who had just joined the fray.
Without a word, Kirito formed a crystal-clear javelin of ice in his hands. His target wasn't the ninjas but the three-headed snake wreaking havoc in the village.
"Now!" One of the Sand ninja lunged at Kirito with a kunai, aiming for a blind spot.
Ding! The kunai struck an ice wall that had risen out of nowhere. The ninja's attack was effortlessly deflected, leaving him exposed.
"Fire Release: Fireball Jutsu!" another Sand ninja shouted, aiming to melt the barrier.
The ice and fire collided, generating a dense cloud of mist. Seizing the opportunity, several Sand ninja attempted to rush Kirito.
Kakaka— The mist solidified into frost, freezing the attackers in place. The biting cold spread outward, leaving frost on the ground and on the clothes of even those standing at a distance.
Meanwhile, in the heart of the village, the cursed-marked three-headed snake was still wreaking havoc. The massive beast crushed buildings as it moved, unstoppable despite the relentless attacks of Konoha's ninjas.
Suddenly, an ice-blue javelin streaked through the sky, piercing one of the snake's bodies.
The creature hissed in agony as frost spread from the point of impact, freezing its entire body. Within moments, the once-destructive beast was transformed into a massive ice sculpture.
The ninjas on the battlefield froze in shock, their gazes following the trajectory of the javelin back to the arena.
"Who... did that?" whispered one ninja.
Morino Ibiki, overseeing the operation, narrowed his eyes. "The direction... it came from the Chunin Exam stadium."
The unexpected display of power left a deep impression on everyone present.
Back at the Hokage viewing platform, the battle within the barrier had finally concluded. Hiruzen Sarutobi had sacrificed himself, using the Reaper Death Seal to trap the soul of Orochimaru's arms. Orochimaru, weakened and unable to use most of his ninjutsu, fled with the help of the Sound Four.
As the barrier fell, the pursuing Anbu were stopped by Kidomaru's webbing, giving Orochimaru enough time to escape.
When the Anbu turned back, they saw Kirito examining the Third Hokage's body.
"What are you doing?!" one of the Anbu shouted, drawing his kunai.
Kirito didn't look up. "I'm a medical ninja," he said calmly, continuing his examination.
The Anbu squad leader held up a hand, signaling his subordinate to stand down. "Let him work. If there's even a sliver of hope..."
After a thorough check, Kirito rose to his feet, his expression grave. "I'm sorry. The Third Hokage has no life force left. His soul is gone. There's nothing I can do."
The Anbu lowered their heads in silence, the weight of the loss settling over them.
Guy and Kakashi arrived moments later. Guy, trusting Kirito's medical expertise, asked, "Is there no chance at all?"
Kirito shook his head. "The Third Hokage's body is lifeless. Even if I stimulate it with medical ninjutsu, it won't respond. Without vitality, there's no way to save him."
Kakashi, noticing the seal on Hiruzen's abdomen, understood. "It's not something anyone could fix, not even Kirito."
The gathered shinobi could only look on in sorrow at the peaceful expression on Hiruzen's face.
The next day, the village held a funeral for the Third Hokage and all the ninjas who had died during the attack. The sky was overcast, and a light rain fell as if the heavens were mourning alongside them.
Kirito, dressed in black like the rest, stood silently among the mourners. He noticed the absence of Danzo, the shadowy figure whose machinations he had read about in his previous life.
[Even on a day like this, Danzo doesn't show his face,] Kirito thought.
Kirito had always been cautious of Konoha's "dark side." The Chunin Exams had been a test—not just of his strength but of Konoha itself. If the village proved irredeemably corrupt, he had no intention of staying.
[This village is just a resting place for me,] Kirito mused, glancing at the somber faces of his comrades. [But as long as these people are here, I'll stay.]
The sound of light rain mingled with quiet sobs as the mourners paid their respects.
When it was Kirito's turn to place flowers on the Third Hokage's memorial, a fleeting thought crossed his mind:
[I guess I'll be more comfortable under Tsunade's leadership.]
As he stepped back, Kirito cast one last glance at the Hokage's monument.
[Rest in peace, Hiruzen. You've done enough.]
The rain continued to fall, gentle yet unrelenting, as Konoha bid farewell to its leader.
