Perhaps it was because, starting with Freeza, the enemies encountered in the pursuit of the Dragon Balls were all adversaries with power levels in the billions. This misconception led many to believe that those with power levels of ten or twenty thousand were mere trash in the universe.
However, in truth, even Captain Ginyu—Freeza's top lieutenant in the original series—only had a power level of 120,000. The rest of the Ginyu Force didn't even surpass 100,000. Vegeta, when he first came to Earth, had a power level of 18,000 and was already unbearably arrogant.
A power level of 10,000 was a significant threshold in the universe. Those who could surpass it were often seen as gods by mortals. With a mere flick of their finger, they could annihilate thousands or tens of thousands in an instant. They could even effortlessly destroy planets and wipe out civilizations.
This was why Freeza, with his actual power level of 120 million, could declare himself Emperor of the Universe. Apart from his previously injured father, there wasn't anyone in the universe strong enough to even witness his true form.
Namek was just one among countless inhabited planets in the universe. While its people possessed extraordinary abilities, very few Namekians had power levels exceeding 10,000. Talents like Piccolo and Nail were rare prodigies of the Dragon Clan.
Thus, Taro didn't face much difficulty obtaining the Dragon Balls he needed from the Namekian tribes. He flew from one tribe to the next, winning his battles quickly. Soon, he had five Dragon Balls in his possession.
The Namekian Dragon Balls were enormous. Carrying five of them through the sky was a strenuous task, even for Taro. His arms simply weren't long enough to hold them comfortably. The seven little birds that often helped Taro in the past were eager to assist, but the Dragon Balls were far too large for the tiny creatures.
Due to Namek's three suns, the planet had no night, and Taro had no sense of how much time had passed as he gathered the five Dragon Balls.
---
The five massive Dragon Balls lay on an open field, their proximity causing them to flicker with a faint glow. The seven colorful birds perched atop the shimmering spheres, watching the duel taking place nearby.
This was the sixth Namekian tribe, the location of the sixth Dragon Ball.
The tribe's warrior struck Taro with a powerful palm, sending him flying.
"Where's all that strength you just showed?" the warrior taunted.
Taro flew a great distance before catching himself with one hand and springing back into the air. As he soared, he brought two fingers together on his right hand, where lightning and flames danced at his fingertips. A crimson glow flashed in his eyes for an instant as he pointed at the warrior below.
Boom!
A beam of intertwined lightning and fire shot toward the Namekian warrior.
"He's gotten stronger again!" the warrior thought, his pupils shrinking. He dodged desperately but still ended up with a scorched arm, the injury smoldering and emitting white smoke.
The lightning-flame beam struck the ground behind him, leaving a deep, bottomless crater.
Suddenly, two powerful arms wrapped around the warrior from behind.
"This is bad!" the warrior thought, realizing that Taro had vanished from the sky. How is this possible? Why is his power fluctuating so much? His speed is terrifying!
Taro's iron-like arms restrained the warrior, veins bulging and muscles rippling under the strain. In the next moment, blue and white lightning surged from Taro's hands, enveloping the warrior entirely.
"Damn it… Agh…" the warrior groaned as the Bankoku-Bukkiru-Shou coursed through him, leaving his body trembling and numb. His attack is weaker now. This isn't as powerful as that strike from the air! What's going on with this guy?
What the warrior didn't know was that Taro's Mangekyou technique, when pushed to 30x power, could only be sustained for about ten seconds in his current mental state. Not confident he could defeat the warrior within that short window, Taro relied on his 13x Muken technique as his primary attack. He used the 30x Mangekyou sparingly, activating it only at the most critical moments.
The 13x Muken... ultimately failed to deal any significant damage to the village warrior. In the moment Taro's strength gave out, the warrior broke free from his grasp with force and flew into the air.
He hovered mid-air, rubbing his arms, dark smoke rising from his body where the lightning attack had struck.
The Bankoku-Bukkiru-Shou, after all, wasn't true natural lightning but rather an electrical current derived from the transformation of Ki. When the power difference between two fighters was too great, its effect diminished significantly. Even under the amplification of the 13x Muken, Taro's Bankoku-Bukkiru-Shou couldn't incapacitate the village warrior.
"If that's all you've got, you won't be taking our Dragon Ball." The warrior said, casting a glance at the five Dragon Balls under the seven birds' claws.
"That won't do. I must have the Dragon Ball." Taro replied, taking a moment to catch his breath on the ground. He looked up at the Namekian warrior, his expression gradually growing serious. Let's finish this fight within ten seconds.
Taro raised one hand—
Bzzz…
A thin, round disk appeared above his palm— the Destructo Disc, a technique originally developed by Krillin in the original story.
The village warrior was startled. He could tell the power of this technique just by looking at it. "An impressive move! But I won't let you hit me with it!"
"You don't have a choice..." Taro's eyes turned completely crimson, the black four-pointed windmill of the Mangekyou spinning faintly within them.
With a sharp throw, Taro hurled the Ki Disc at the warrior in the air!
Whoosh—
The disc tore through the air, aimed straight at its target!
But for the warrior, dodging such an attack was simple. With a quick sidestep in the air, the Destruco Disc grazed past him. Yet the disc wasn't the only attack coming—Taro followed close behind it.
A fist slammed into the warrior's abdomen.
His stomach spasmed violently, and the warrior let out a dry retch. Taro followed up with a powerful uppercut, sending the warrior hurtling skyward. In an instant, Taro vanished from his original position and reappeared above the rising warrior.
"Again! His speed is leagues above his attacks! Damn it!" The warrior was frustrated. Even though he could handle Taro's strongest attacks, he simply couldn't keep up with Taro's speed, landing him in this disadvantageous position.
Bam!
The warrior was struck mid-air and plummeted to the ground.
By the time he crashed, a foot was already planted firmly on his chest.
Taro's speed had completely surpassed the warrior's expectations.
Looking up, the warrior saw Taro holding another Destructo Disc in his hand. His strange red eyes stared down at him with calm detachment.
"You win." the warrior said reluctantly.
Taro let out a long exhale and deactivated his Mangekyou, dispersing the Destructo Disc casually. A deep, soul-penetrating pain wracked his mind, but he gritted his teeth and endured it. His stamina was nearly depleted, and as he reached into his pouch, he realized there weren't many Senzu Beans left.
Taking out two beans, Taro held them between his fingers, his vision beginning to blur.
"..." He blinked, saying nothing as he ate one bean. Then, he extended a hand to help the fallen warrior and handed him the other bean.
"What is this?" The warrior ate the Senzu Bean and was immediately astonished. "It's just like the elder's healing ability!"
As he mentioned the elder, their elder arrived.
A voice came from above: "Child, the Dragon Ball is yours."
The warrior looked up in surprise to see the elder descending with a large Dragon Ball in his hands. However, his gaze didn't linger on his elder. Instead, it remained fixed on...
"Great Elder!" he exclaimed in surprise.
Taro looked up calmly, his gaze falling upon the towering Namekian elder. The elder was old but not as frail as depicted at the start of the original story. His eyes were even calmer than Taro's, as serene as the unspoiled nature of Namek.
"Earthling, I've brought you the seventh Dragon Ball."
The Great Elder's voice seemed to resonate directly in Taro's mind.
"I've witnessed the effort you've put forth on your journey. The seventh Dragon Ball, which I've safeguarded, is now yours. I will personally summon Porunga for you so that your wish may be fulfilled."
Taro was surprised. He reached out to accept the sixth Dragon Ball from the village elder and thanked him. When he looked up again, he noticed for the first time that the Great Elder wasn't alone. Beside him stood another Namekian warrior, whose appearance bore a striking six-part resemblance to Piccolo. The warrior, holding a large Dragon Ball marked with one star, remained silent, his expression solemn as he guarded the Great Elder.
'That must be the strongest warrior on Namek… perhaps the predecessor to Nail? How powerful is he? Ten thousand? Fifty thousand? A hundred thousand? If Nail could hold his own against Freeza at 550,000, then what about this one?'
As Taro studied the warrior, the warrior studied him in return.
If we were to fight, could I defeat him?
Taro wasn't confident. Perhaps he would have to use that move, the tactical idea he had envisioned.
But at that moment, the Great Elder spoke. "Give it to him, Dart" he said to the warrior who stood vigil by his side.
The guardian, Dart, held the one-star Dragon Ball and was silent for a moment. Then he said. "Great Elder, I wish to fight him."
The Great Elder replied calmly, "You know full well, Dart, that you are far stronger than this Earthling."
Dart responded. "He doesn't need to defeat me to earn my respect." Then, raising his voice, he called out to Taro below, "Earthling! You can have the Dragon Ball, but you must fight me for it!"
From the ground, Taro shouted back. "Agreed!"
The Great Elder sighed. "Go, but don't push him too hard."
"Understood."
Dart descended with the Dragon Ball, landing lightly before Taro. He glanced at the village elder and warrior nearby. "Elder Nick..."
The village elder patted his warrior on the shoulder and said, "Let's go. Don't interfere with their fight."
Once they had left and ascended to join the Great Elder in the air, Dart gently placed the one-star Dragon Ball on the ground. Finally, he stood silently in front of Taro.
The strongest warrior on Namek faced Taro, slowly adopting a battle stance. With a serious expression, he said: "You're strong, but… I don't intend to lose either."
