Jacob Mathew, a young man from Wisconsin, had been staying with his elder brother's family in New York for an event when the lockdown began. Now, he found himself stuck there for much longer than expected.
He woke up one morning, just like any other, and went downstairs to find his brother's wife, Ha-Yoon, busy feeding their toddler, George Cho Mathew.
"Morning, Ha-Yoon," Jacob greeted her.
"Morning, Jacob," she replied, struggling to get George to eat his breakfast. "He doesn't like those formulas—always spits them out."
"Yeah, but the doctor recommended them for his health," Jacob replied, remembering that his nephew had SC, a rare genotype disorder that was missed by doctors. His brother's wife had Ac, not AA, which had been diagnosed at birth.
"By the way, Jacob, your laptop was making a lot of noise in the study," Ha-Yoon said.
"Thanks, Yoon. I'll check it out," he said, heading toward the study. The room had been converted into his makeshift work den for the duration of his stay—his firefighter brother hardly used it.
Jacob sat down at the desk and turned on his computer, only to find a shocking 98k notifications on his TikTok page. Jacob was a well-known TikTok creator, famous for his puzzle-solving skills. His handle, find all, had earned him 17 million followers.
Scrolling through his messages, one name caught his attention: Bella T. She had messaged him 19 times, asking for help finding Ethan Jones's Instagram page. Jacob didn't know who Ethan Jones was, but Bella and several others seemed insistent.
"Who is this Ethan kid?" Jacob muttered aloud, scanning the messages. Most of them seemed to be requests for him to find Ethan's Instagram or Twitter accounts. Others were asking about something called "One Piece," but for now, his focus was on Ethan.
Jacob dove deeper into his search. His investigation led him to a YouTube video titled "Shape of You" by an unknown singer named Ethan Jones. "Wow, this kid's got talent," Jacob said, impressed by the performance. Now, he understood why people were so eager for him to find the boy.
But as he searched for more info about Ethan, Jacob ran into a roadblock. Most Ethan Jones accounts online were either fake or belonged to other people who had changed their names. Jacob's frustration mounted.
"This guy's a ghost online," he muttered. "How hard could it be to find him?"
He decided to dig even deeper. After some more searching, Jacob discovered a comment from someone named Precious Jones—a relative, perhaps a sister? She seemed to be very active online, a total social butterfly. Jacob figured she was probably Ethan's younger sister, especially after seeing how close she was to him in an old high school post. In the picture, she was hugging a boy who looked older than her, but not like the Ethan Jones he saw in the video.
Jacob followed the thread, checking the tags and posts. He eventually stumbled upon a guy named Paul Miller—son of a semi-famous agent with clients ranging from actors to adult stars. He had also tracked down the identity of Paul's mom, Stephanie Yellowspot, an actress Jacob remembered from a movie he and his brother used to watch.
"Alright, time to get back to work," Jacob muttered, knowing he was getting closer.
He cross-referenced Paul and Precious's followers to see who they both followed in common. Fifteen accounts stood out, but two were set to private: Annamolly and Stacy Britney. Jacob suspected one of these was Ethan, but he couldn't take any risks based on guesses alone.
Jacob checked out TikTok and soon came across a video of Precious doing a popular trend. Sitting in the background was a person Jacob immediately recognized. "Wait, is that Ethan?" he said, pausing the video and zooming in. Sure enough, there he was, sitting in the background, replying to the post in the comment section with a message: "Take down the video I'm showing in the back."
"Too late, loser! It's already up," Precious replied cheekily. "I have to deal with having my loser brother in my video now."
That was the confirmation Jacob needed. He quickly checked the Twitter account attached to the name that replied precious in the comment section and found Ethan's profile. Jacob was grinning with satisfaction. He had finally found the elusive Ethan Jones.
Jacob couldn't resist sharing the news with his followers: "Just found the Instagram and Twitter account of the singer of Shape of You."
Little did Ethan know, his efforts to remain anonymous had just been shattered. All the years he spent cultivating an online ghost identity, choosing obscure usernames and avoiding social media, were about to be undone. Jacob had cracked the code, and the world would soon know the real Ethan Jones.
