Chapitre 7: Restless refuge

As Elias and Lyra stepped into the Safe Zone, Elias felt a strange mixture of relief and disappointment.

He had expected something grand, perhaps a fortress or a magical sanctuary teeming with life.

Instead, the Safe Zone was a small clearing surrounded by glowing runes etched into the forest floor.

These runes pulsed faintly, casting an ethereal blue light that illuminated the area.

Above them, a faint shimmering barrier rippled, forming an invisible dome that separated them from the oppressive darkness of the forest.

Elias took a deep breath, his shoulders sagging.

The weight of the forest's suffocating aura lifted slightly within the clearing.

Around them, other players were scattered in small groups.

Most looked battered and weary, some nursing wounds, while others were sharpening weapons or silently watching the edges of the barrier as if expecting an attack at any moment.

Their wary gazes turned toward Elias and Lyra as they entered, and Elias instinctively gripped the hilt of his blade tighter.

"Don't get too comfortable," Lyra muttered, her silver eyes scanning the clearing. "Safe Zone or not, there's always someone looking to take advantage of rookies."

Elias nodded, feeling a twinge of unease.

The people here were a diverse mix: some wore makeshift armor similar to his own, while others wielded ornate weapons or clutched glowing magical artifacts.

A few had strange glowing markings etched into their skin, similar to the runes on the ground, and their presence exuded an air of experience.

They looked like veterans who had survived this forest far longer than he had.

In the center of the clearing stood a stone pedestal.

A glowing orb hovered just above it, radiating a gentle warmth.

Its golden light bathed the clearing, and Elias felt a sense of calm wash over him as he drew nearer.

The air around the orb seemed lighter, more breathable, as if it was actively dispelling the tension from his body.

"That's the Safe Zone's heart," Lyra said, nodding toward the orb.

"It powers the barrier, keeps the monsters out, and gives us a chance to recover. But it's not invincible."

She gestured to the faint cracks in the runes surrounding the clearing. "If the heart fails, this place will be overrun in minutes."

Elias swallowed hard. "So, we're safe for now, but not forever?"

"Exactly," Lyra replied. "The Safe Zones are only as strong as the heart. If it gets overloaded or attacked…"

She didn't finish her sentence, but the implication was clear. The protection they relied on could vanish in an instant.

Before Elias could dwell on the thought, a notification chimed softly in his mind.

Ding!

Elias felt an almost immediate sense of rejuvenation as the dull ache in his limbs faded and the burning pain from his shoulder wound disappeared completely.

His breathing evened out, and he no longer felt like he was about to collapse.

The notification wasn't done, though.

Elias blinked at the sudden surge of information. "Stats?" he muttered under his breath. "How do I even...?"

"You're thinking out loud again," Lyra said with a smirk. "The system updates your stats automatically when you hit a milestone.

But you've got bonus points now, so you'll want to allocate those carefully. Strength, agility, mana… you'll need them all eventually. Or don't, and just stay weak."

"Gee, thanks for the advice," Elias muttered, but the sarcastic edge in Lyra's tone didn't bother him as much as usual.

He focused on the notification again, trying to decide where to spend the bonus points.

After a moment's thought, he added one point to Agility and the other to Strength, hoping to balance out his capabilities.

Updated Stats:

Strength: 8

Agility: 10

Satisfied, Elias turned his attention back to the clearing.

As they approached the pedestal, a tall figure stepped into their path.

The man was clad in dark leather armor, his sharp features framed by messy black hair and piercing blue eyes.

A massive sword rested across his back, and the sheer weight of his presence made Elias hesitate.

"New blood," the man said, his tone neutral but assessing.

His gaze lingered on Lyra for a moment before shifting to Elias. "I'm Markus, the de facto leader here. Stick to the rules, and we won't have any problems."

"What rules?" Elias asked, trying to mask the nervousness in his voice.

"Don't steal. Don't provoke fights. And don't bring trouble into the Safe Zone," Markus said bluntly. "Simple enough?"

Elias nodded. "Got it."

Markus's eyes narrowed slightly, as if weighing the truth of Elias's response, but he said nothing more. Instead, he turned his attention to Lyra.

"You're back. I assume this one"....he tilted his head toward Elias...."is your responsibility?"

"For now," Lyra replied, her tone clipped. "He's still alive, isn't he?"

Markus snorted, then waved them off. "Get some rest. Things only get harder from here."

As Markus strode away, Elias let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. "He's… intimidating."

Lyra shrugged. "He's seen too many rookies die. Keeps him from getting attached."

"Comforting," Elias muttered, following Lyra toward the pedestal.

As they approached, he pulled the obsidian token card he'd looted earlier from his pocket.

The intricate runes etched into its surface seemed to glow faintly, pulsing in time with the light of the heart orb.

"What do I do with this?" Elias asked, holding up the card.

Lyra gestured to a smaller pedestal near the heart orb. "Token exchange.

The system handles it. Just place it on the pedestal and see what you get."

Elias hesitated but did as she suggested.

As soon as the card touched the pedestal, a burst of light enveloped it, and a new notification appeared in his vision.

Ding!

[Shadow Wolf Token Card Redeemed.]

[Reward Unlocked: Reinforced Fur Armor.]

The light coalesced into a solid object… a sleek set of black leather armor lined with dark fur.

The material looked both durable and lightweight, and faint runes shimmered along its surface.

"Not bad," Lyra said, inspecting the armor. "Better than what you've got, anyway."

Elias picked up the armor, marveling at its craftsmanship. "Do I just… put it on?"

"Unless you want to keep running around in rags, yeah," Lyra replied with a smirk.

Elias quickly donned the armor, and another notification popped up.

Equipment Equipped: Reinforced Fur Armor.

[Defense +5, Agility +2.]

The armor fit snugly, and Elias immediately felt more agile and protected.

He couldn't help but grin, though his excitement was short-lived when the system chimed in again.

Ding!

[Congratulations on surviving your first trial, Elias.]

[Don't get cocky, though. You've only scratched the surface. Or maybe the surface scratched you? Either way, try not to die.]

Elias groaned. "Does the system always have to be so sarcastic?"

Lyra chuckled. "Get used to it. It only gets worse."

Before Elias could respond, a new figure emerged from the shadows…

A woman with striking green hair and piercing emerald eyes.

She carried a satchel filled with vials and scrolls, and her presence was somehow both comforting and unnerving.

"You're new," she said, her voice melodic but sharp. "I'm Elara, the merchant. If you've got tokens, I've got wares."

Elias exchanged a glance with Lyra. "Merchant?"

"She runs the shop," Lyra explained. "Anything you need....potions, weapons, upgrades....you'll probably find it with her. For a price."

Elias nodded, though he didn't have any more tokens to spend. "Good to know."

Elara smiled faintly. "Welcome to the forest, rookie. Try not to get yourself killed. It's bad for business."

With his armor equipped, his stats updated, and the Safe Zone offering a momentary reprieve,

Elias finally felt a flicker of hope. But as he glanced toward the shimmering barrier, he couldn't shake the feeling that this fragile sanctuary wouldn't hold forever.
