Nodding, Reiki raised his hand and focused his chakra.
"Reiki," he whispered as he etched his name onto the stone. Instantly, a wave of weakness overcame him as if his very essence had been drained.
"Impressive, you have a strong partner," the pink-haired girl said. "The next stage is up to you. Earning your partner's trust doesn't end here. Feel their presence."
With that, she vanished, and the green-haired girl waved playfully before disappearing as well. Chedori, with a pout and a defiant expression, also left after a moment, muttering under her breath.
The contract stone dissolved, merging into Reiki's palm. He could now sense the Book of Contract within him, ready to be summoned with a mere thought.
"Boom!"
A shadow fell, stirring a thick cloud of dust. Within it, a deep, resonant roar echoed. From the haze, a massive black dragon emerged—not one of those rounded Western dragons, but a true black dragon.
"Are you my contractor?" it rumbled. "Just a weak boy. I don't care how you gained the Book of Contract's approval. If you can't pass my test, I won't acknowledge you. Remember my name—Dark Night!"
Each step the dragon took sent tremors through the ground.
"Hello, my name is Reiki," he said, trying to mask his awe. "What is your test?"
Dark Night's eyes glinted. "Hurt me! Prove yourself with raw strength alone."
Before Reiki could respond, the dragon's tail lashed out. The impact was immediate and powerful, too swift to avoid. Reiki barely had time to shield his face with his arms before being flung across the ground.
"ROOM!" Reiki activated the last reserves of his chakra, using the power of his surgical fruit to mend his injuries. His hands moved rapidly, aided by the lingering effects of his recovery and stamina potions.
With newfound resolve, Reiki charged forward. The Book of Contract had sapped his essence, leaving him weakened. Yet, even now, he pushed to discover his limits.
Seeing this, Dark Night's mouth curled into a faint smile. This boy had already passed the true test. Courage was the foundation for everything.
