Sore and understanding the need for rest, Eiji thought back on his idea of training a sense.
He had read novels before of a blind protagonist who could hear the future from the twitch of a muscle and he couldn't help but think.
Does being superhuman or well, superghoul open similar doors?
Eiji thought for a while and came to the conclusion, if he was to train a sense, he should only train one.
Different senses can do the same things as other senses, for example, if he could hear someone from 300 feet away couldn't he also smell them from 300 feet away?
His goal with training only a singular sense was to maximize the ability of one of them to an extreme in hopes of making up time against longer lived foes.
Cutting open an apple and setting it next to a glass of milk, Eiji blindfolded himself and attempted to smell them, moving further back each time he could confirm and differentiate them.
This type of training, he planned to replicate in the future, with all sorts of smells.
************************************************************************************************
Soon, almost a whole year had gone by and Eiji had just graduated highschool. Learning to keep up appearances was difficult but forcing food down and acting as he usually did, no one could tell of any changes, at least mentally.
Physically Eiji had been progressing at a breakneck pace. With muscles all over showing signs of serious growth.
While Eiji couldn't be called big, no one would mistake his physique for being scrawny any longer.
Sadly. despite hiding the thoughts behind his eyes from others, he was exposed to them every second of the day.
Although Eiji didn't savor or even want to kill to eat, he valued his own life more than others.
This thought process slowly turned him colder over time. Seeing the benefit in getting rid of any potential threat to his life whenever deemed necessary.
The pressure of keeping an act up around humans and learning every trick possible to survive undetected as a Ghoul was eating at his mental state.
However, today marked a new chapter for Eiji. Throughout this past year he had learned more about the Ghoul world. Most of this information came from the one Ghoul he met, and eventually killed.
Afterall, the less people that know him, the better.
Despite having killed a Ghoul, there was no confidence boost, merely the feeling of relief.
He had learned that she was just a bottom of the barrel Ghoul who had never won a fight against another Ghoul before.
If that alone didn't make him feel lucky, then learning that Ghouls have a special ability to manifest something called a kagune sent chills down his spine.
Had he met a Ghoul with one of those, he had no doubt his fate would be death.
Eiji stumbled upon a piece of information in this interrogation that gave him hope, yet he viewed it with equal amounts of suspicion.
Within the 20th ward, there lived a group of peace loving Ghouls.
To Eiji, this seemed like a trap, and yet after a year of living feeling like he was alone in a war against the world, he desperately wanted it to be real.
Eiji had made his plans immediately by selling his unneeded belongings as soon as he graduated and left for the 20th ward with nothing but the clothes on his back and a wallet filled with a decent amount of money.
Throughout his year of solitude as a new Ghoul, Eiji had never stopped training his sense of smell. At the moment, it had gotten to the point where he could easily differentiate Ghouls and humans, within a 50 meter radius.
This gave him hope in finding the Ghouls he was looking for, and avoiding the ones he wasn't.
Eiji thought about it for a while and figured that by living in the 20th ward for a period of time he would be able to verify the truth of there being peace living Ghouls from a safe distance.
At the same time, he planned to take his time in order not to fall into the potential honey trap that has been set by Ghouls who were no doubt stronger than a kagune-less Ghoul like himself.
"First things first, I need to make the reason I moved here believable."
I'm not very satisfied with this chapter, it's late and I only just finished my assignments so i'm not gonna revise or edit. Chapter 4 isn't started yet, but I have an idea for the direction I want it to go, we'll see how it turns out compared to this slop. Thanks for reading.
