The evening found me in my bedroom studio, surrounded by equipment that straddled two timelines. While my MPC2000XL represented the present, my Gateway computer held designs for the future. On its screen, I carefully documented the technical frameworks that would eventually revolutionize music production.
Mom knocked gently, entering with a stack of permit applications and a cup of coffee. She'd changed back into comfortable clothes, but her executive presence remained. "The contractor submitted the final estimates. We'll need to increase the initial loan amount."
"Already planned for it," I replied, minimizing a schematic for what would become our neural processing interface. "The Sony advance covers the difference. Did you review the equipment specifications?"
She settled into my desk chair, spreading out the paperwork. "Some of these components don't even exist in current product catalogs. Custom fabrication will take months."
"That's what we want," I explained, thinking of the proprietary technology we'd develop. "Standard equipment won't support where we're going. We need to build our own infrastructure."
My phone lit up with a message from Mitchell at Sony. They wanted to schedule a meeting about the next batch of productions. Perfect timing – we'd need the additional advance to fund our more ambitious technical developments.
"I've been researching music industry technology trends," Mom said, studying a component list. "Nobody's working at this level. Not even the major studios. What do you see that they don't?"
Everything, I thought. Thirty years of technological evolution compressed into development plans that had to seem ambitious but not impossible.
"Digital production is just the beginning," I explained, pulling up carefully simplified drawings of our future innovations. "Think about how computers changed recording. Now imagine the next leap forward – direct neural interfaces for composition, quantum processing for sound design, AI-assisted production tools."
"You're talking science fiction, Marcus."
"I'm talking inevitable evolution. We're just getting there first."
Derek called, excited about a breakthrough with the new production techniques I'd taught him. His progress was accelerating beyond the original timeline, adapting to concepts that shouldn't exist yet. Another variable to manage carefully.
"The patent lawyer called back," Mom mentioned, reviewing her notes. "She's intrigued by your technical specifications. Says some of these innovations could be groundbreaking."
"That's why we file now," I responded, remembering how patent battles had complicated our original rise. "Protect the intellectual property before anyone realizes its potential."
As night fell over the Bronx, I refined our technical documentation. Each innovation had to be presented as theoretical development, not future certainty. Each specification written to suggest possibility rather than predetermined evolution.
"You should get some sleep," Mom advised, gathering her papers. "The bank meeting's early tomorrow."
But sleep felt impossible with the weight of future knowledge pressing against present limitations. In my original timeline, we'd built our empire through trial and error, learning expensive lessons along the way.
This time, we were laying the foundation with precision. Every circuit, every line of code, every technical specification carefully crafted to support innovations that wouldn't exist for years.
I saved the final documents, encrypted with passwords that referenced a future only I remembered. Tomorrow would bring meetings, permits, and careful negotiations. But tonight was for planning, for mapping the digital architecture of a revolution.
