The days after the festival were quieter, filled with reflection and a budding sense of peace. Kael found himself thinking about Selene more and more. There was a new tenderness in their interactions, like they were tiptoeing around the raw emotions of the past, but it didn't feel fragile, it felt necessary, like a garden that needed careful tending after years of neglect.
Kael sat on the deck of his family's seaside house, the gentle sound of the waves calming his restless thoughts. The sky was painted with soft pastels, signaling the end of another day. His mind replayed his dance with Selene under the festival lights, the unspoken promise in her eyes.
Flashback
They had spent countless nights on this very deck as children, watching the stars and making up stories about constellations. Back then, everything seemed so simple. Kael had thought their lives would always be intertwined, that they would never face the kind of separation they did.
"Do you think we'll always be together?" Selene had asked once, her voice small but hopeful.
"Of course," Kael had replied confidently. "We're a team. You and me, forever."

Present Day
That confidence had wavered over the years, but now, sitting here alone, Kael felt it returning. He believed in second chances, in love, in life. Maybe this was their moment to rebuild what they'd lost.
The sound of footsteps brought him back to the present. He turned to see Damian approaching, his usual easygoing grin in place.
"Hey, mind if I join?" Damian asked, pulling out a chair beside Kael.
"Sure," Kael said, nodding.
The two sat in comfortable silence for a few minutes, watching the sunset. Damian, usually so full of words, seemed content to sit quietly, and Kael appreciated it.
"Things going well with Selene?" Damian finally asked, his tone casual but curious.
Kael nodded slowly, a small smile tugging at his lips. "Yeah, I think we're figuring it out. It's still a little complicated, but...we're getting there."
"I'm glad to hear that," Damian said, leaning back in his chair. "You two have something special. I've always believed that."
"Thanks, man," Kael replied, feeling a warmth in his chest at his friend's words.
Damian hesitated for a moment before speaking again. "And, uh, Lyra and I...well, we've been talking more lately. I think there's something between us, too."
Kael grinned, turning to look at Damian fully. "I knew it! I saw the way she looked at you during the festival."
Damian chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, she's...she's something else. I didn't think I'd be this nervous about it, though."
"Why nervous? She clearly likes you."
"Maybe," Damian said, his smile softening. "But I've never felt this way before. It's different."
Kael understood that feeling all too well. "Just take your time. Don't rush it. Let it grow."
