As he walked through the bustling crowd, he spotted Selene at the edge of the festival, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the vibrant surroundings. Her presence struck him, stirring a whirlwind of emotions, excitement, fear, and a deep-rooted longing.
"Hey, Kael!" Lyra called, waving him over. She stood beside Damian, who was busy trying to win a stuffed animal at a carnival game.
"Having fun?" Kael asked, trying to mask his nerves as he joined them.
"Just trying to get this one to win me something!" Lyra laughed, gesturing to Damian. "But it seems he's more interested in chatting up the cute girl behind the counter."
Damian shot her a playful glare but smiled as he turned back to the game. "Just wait! I'll get you that giant teddy bear."
Kael felt a warmth spread through him as he watched their easy banter. He'd never seen Lyra so happy, and it reminded him of the carefree days he'd shared with Selene. But beneath the surface, the unease lingered.
"Hey, I think Selene's over there," Kael said, nodding in her direction.
"Go talk to her!" Lyra urged, nudging him gently. "It's time to clear the air."
Kael hesitated, glancing back at Selene, who was now laughing with a group of friends. He could see how her smile lit up the space around her, drawing people in. The sight both comforted and terrified him.
"Yeah, I think I will," he finally said, taking a deep breath as he steeled himself.

"I wanted to apologize for how I acted before," Kael said, his voice steady. "It wasn't fair to you."
Selene's expression shifted, surprise flickering in her eyes. "You have nothing to apologize for, Kael. I was the one who left without saying anything."
"I just wish things could have been different," he admitted, his heart racing as he searched for the right words. "But I want to try. I want to see where this goes."
Selene nodded slowly, a mix of hope and apprehension in her gaze. "Me too. I want to understand us again."
