What the hell were they talking about? If there was an ‘it’ out there, I needed to get to Lena. Now. I tried to climb out of the car, but the man who struck the car shoved me back into the passenger seat.

“Stay.”

“Stay? I’m not a fucking dog, man. What’s going on?” The men ignored me and began to circle the car, as if waiting for whatever it was that was lurking within the darkness to spring out. “There’s a young woman out there!”

“Stay right where you are,” the bearded one yelled, standing in front of me in a protective stance. Before I could react another guttural roar tore through the night. It sounded closer, and I could feel the tension radiating off the men.

“What the hell was that?” I muttered, more to myself than to anyone else. I had no idea what was going on, and I was scared. But not for myself. For Lena. “Lena,” I said out loud this time. “She’s out there, she’s alone. We have to get to her!”
