Chapitre 66: There's Something Off About My Pokémon. [66]

Su Xiangrou's documents were meticulously reviewed by Lu Cheng, who found that they used a wealth of case studies to demonstrate how a Pokémon's mastery of one move could influence its ability to learn others. For example, if a Charizard had a deep understanding of Flamethrower, it might be able to master Blast Burn. Similarly, if it was proficient in moves like Slash and Brick Break, it could potentially learn Outrage.

The article also pointed out that the same species of Pokémon could be trained in different directions depending on their individual aptitude and move proficiency.

"This is basically the difference between Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y," Lu Cheng muttered to himself.

At the end of the article, a specific paragraph was highlighted in bold: "Of course, trainers can have their Pokémon learn moves from multiple types, but this poses a significant challenge for both the trainer and the Pokémon. Training in this manner could lead to misunderstandings or failure to master moves. However, if executed properly, a Pokémon with proficiency in multiple types will possess exceptional versatility in battle."

Lu Cheng suddenly recalled Wu Ye at the U20 opening ceremony. His Dragonite was clearly trained to perfection, mastering moves from a variety of types.

"Focusing on one type or broadening the range of attacks…" Lu Cheng rubbed his nose thoughtfully. "So learning moves comes with this kind of limitation, huh?"

He glanced at his two Poké Balls. His Vulpix had mostly learned fire-type moves so far, but Lu Cheng hadn't forgotten how the system had evaluated it: Strong mental power. This meant that Vulpix could potentially develop in a psychic direction as well, mastering both psychic and fire abilities.

As for Grovyle, Lu Cheng had no intention of steering it toward special attacks. Its incredible speed and proficiency with sword-like moves clearly marked it as a physical attacker—a true assassin. He would continue to hone that aspect of Grovyle.

Setting the documents aside, a smile spread across Lu Cheng's face. He finally had a clear plan for the future of his Pokémon's move training.

I know exactly how to train them now.

To thank Su Xiangrou for the helpful document, Lu Cheng handed over the evolution data he had stored in the system space. The evolution data appeared to be nothing more than a small USB drive. Lu Cheng wasn't entirely sure of its origins, so he told Su Xiangrou that he had picked it up at a Pokémon market and thought it might help with her Porygon's evolution.

Su Xiangrou was initially skeptical. After all, even her uncle's company had been struggling to crack the mystery of Porygon's evolution. However, when she took the USB to the computer lab, it was clear that this was no ordinary device. Without hesitation, she rushed off to her uncle's company to analyze it.

"I wonder what it'll look like when Porygon evolves," Lu Cheng muttered with a wry smile. "As long as it doesn't end up causing some kind of 'Porygon incident,' we'll be fine…"

That afternoon, in an effort to help Vulpix master Fire Spin, Lu Cheng set off for another round of intense training with his two Pokémon.

---

"Baozi, you just stay nearby, and if things start getting out of hand, use Rain Dance," Lu Cheng instructed Pelipper on the empty construction site. To make sure nothing went wrong during Vulpix's training, he borrowed Pelipper from A-Le as a safeguard in case things got out of control. Pelipper, familiar with Lu Cheng, flapped its wings happily in response.

"Pelii!"

Lu Cheng nodded and turned to Grovyle. "You try to block Vulpix's Flamethrower with the bone sword. If Vulpix can't hold back, I'll have Pelipper use Protect immediately."

Grovyle, clutching its bone sword, silently nodded.

Lu Cheng had three goals with this training: First, to help Vulpix practice Flamethrower and see if there was any chance of mastering Fire Spin. Second, after seeing Grovyle cut through Wartortle's Water Gun in their last match, Lu Cheng wanted to test the limits of this move. And third, he wanted to gauge how much his Pokémon had grown over the past month. The U20 tournament was still ongoing, and he couldn't afford to get complacent.

"Let's start!" Lu Cheng called out.

"Vulpix, use Flamethrower! Grovyle, try to cut through it with the bone sword!"

Watching the fierce flames erupt, Lu Cheng couldn't help but feel a bit anxious. This training method was definitely unconventional. Many of the impressive moves pulled off in battle are difficult to replicate or predict. But if Grovyle could manage this, it would take its combat abilities to the next level!

Lu Cheng's hand instinctively tightened. If anything went wrong, he was ready to call for Pelipper to use Protect.

Vulpix's Flamethrower was powerful, enhanced by the charcoal it had been training with since the elimination rounds. A pillar of fire erupted from its mouth, and the intense heat warped the air for a brief moment. The flames surged forward across the three meters that separated them.

Grovyle gripped the bone sword tightly, a cold gleam flashing in its eyes. Kenki! In the battle with Wartortle, it had mastered this technique, and unlike moves affected by items like King's Rock, this one allowed for swift counterattacks. The fire was less than half a meter away when Grovyle took a deep breath and raised its bone sword horizontally.

Cut down the middle!

The flaming column split in two as the bone sword sliced through it!

However, Vulpix's eyes narrowed in determination. With a growl, it increased the intensity of the flames even further.

Grovyle only furrowed its brows in response. Tightening its grip on the sword hilt, it exhaled sharply. Slash! A flash of white light accompanied the move, and the remaining flames scattered into the air, leaving only flickering embers behind.

"It's alright," Lu Cheng said, patting the disappointed Vulpix with a smile. "Don't rush it, we'll get there."

Vulpix's mood quickly brightened when Lu Cheng pulled out the specially-made pokéblock with the sweet aroma of Nanab Berry. Its ears perked up, and a smile spread across its face.

Recalling Grovyle's earlier movements, Lu Cheng rubbed his chin thoughtfully. He had clearly seen the signature flash of light indicating a skill activation, but Grovyle's move list didn't show anything like Protect. Curiosity piqued, Lu Cheng directed the system's magnifying glass toward Grovyle:

GrovyleNature: Lonely

Abilities: Unburden, Steadfast (Hidden Ability)

Moveset:

Slash (Mastered)

Quick Attack (Mastered)

Pound (Basic)

Agility (Mastered)

Leaf Blade (Basic)

Fury Cutter (Mastered)

Mega Drain (Proficient)

Detect (Proficient)

"So, it learned Detect," Lu Cheng murmured to himself. Detect allowed the user to protect itself from most moves for one turn, similar to Protect, but with a unique flare.

"But what do these words in parentheses mean?" Lu Cheng wondered aloud.

"Ding—The move list now displays the proficiency level of each skill, categorized into four stages: Basic, Proficient, Skilled, and Mastered."

Lu Cheng stroked his chin. Since the system's new analysis feature had been added, the proficiency levels of each move had appeared in the move lists. While the system's magnifying glass could reveal the mastered moves of opponents' Pokémon, it showed all of his own Pokémon's moves, including their proficiency levels.

"Only four mastered moves?" Lu Cheng thought, feeling a bit daunted. He remembered his grandpa's Tauros, which had mastered a total of eight moves.

I've still got a long way to go.
