Half a month later, the Kent family, after almost a month of traveling, finally returned to their farm.
"Ah, home sweet home!" Mike sighed as he set down his luggage. Turning to Clark and the other two, he added, "Hurry up! Pack your things, we're going to the restaurant in town for dinner!"
But instead of the cheers he expected, he was met with groans.
"Oh, no!" Eric wailed. "Dad, I can't handle eating out anymore!"
Charles looked up at Mike, eyes pleading. "I'm gonna be sick, Dad."
Clark joined in, "I want braised pork!"
The three of them swallowed in unison, as if savoring the thought.
"Little gluttons!" Mike laughed, giving Charles' nose a playful tweak. "All right, put away your bags. I'll go get some meat. You can just stay home and relax."
The boys nodded enthusiastically.
Mike smiled, put away his things, and headed out. He drove to the supermarket in town, where he loaded up on ingredients. Afterward, he picked up a few toys for the kids and left the store with bags in hand.
As he placed the bags in the back seat and walked around to the driver's side, a display across the street caught his eye.
"Raven?"
On the screen of the electronics store, scenes of battles played out, and Raven's face flashed briefly before the camera shifted.
"Still out there causing trouble, huh?" Mike murmured, amused.
It had been three years since he last saw Raven. Although they kept in touch, they only caught up occasionally to exchange a few updates. Ever since the incident at Three Mile Island, the Hellfire Club had become increasingly active, and Raven had grown busier by the day.
Mike shook his head, got into the car, and headed back home.
No matter what Hellfire or the government was up to, it didn't concern him anymore. He was just a farmer now.
Back at home, he prepared a feast for the three eager boys, who were all but drooling over their plates. Once they were full and tucked into bed, Mike finally had a quiet moment to himself.
Sitting at his desk, he opened up his system interface with a grin.
After coming back home, the boys had unlocked a new growth record called "A Long-Distance Journey," and Mike's ability level had finally upgraded.
Host: Mike Kent
Novice gift: Assassin time
Ability: Memory Fantasy Materialization
Current ability level: LV2
Upgrade progress: 1%
Sons: Clark Kent (Kryptonian), Eric Kent (mutant, not yet awakened), Charles Kent (mutant, not yet awakened)
Finally, an upgrade! After six years of waiting, Mike could hardly believe it. Feeling almost emotional, he gave himself a silent thumbs up and began testing his new abilities.
First, his power of materialization had increased, extending the duration and enabling him to materialize more complex items. But what really caught his attention was a new feature—he could now materialize skills!
Excited, Mike's eyes gleamed as he explored his options. Although he couldn't sustain abilities, he could now create skills that were usable in a single instance. For example, if he could materialize fire-based abilities, he could continually cast fireballs; but as a skill, he could only summon a single fireball each time he wanted to attack. Still, this new upgrade was definitely a game-changer.
Testing it out, Mike searched his memories, selected a skill, and activated it.
A distorted shimmer appeared on his palm, and the next instant, he disappeared from his desk and reappeared outside his house. Teleportation. It had worked!
"This upgrade was worth the wait!"
The materialization duration was still limited, making it risky to use in a fight, but he had his cards to help manage that. He could materialize skills onto cards to make them readily accessible.
Now more motivated than ever, he rushed back inside and sat down at his desk, ready to start adding new skill cards to his collection. But then he noticed a small, inconspicuous line of text at the bottom of his system screen.
"You have a new reward to claim."
Mike blinked in surprise. This system really had a knack for hiding things. If he hadn't happened to notice it, he wouldn't have known for who knows how long.
He selected the reward, and a message appeared in his mind.
The reward was a lottery draw for a permanent item.
A virtual box appeared before him, with images of various items flashing inside: The Distant Utopia, Heaven's Chain, Thor's Hammer, the Spear of Longinus…
Staring at the items, Mike felt a surge of excitement. After calming himself, he reached into the box, feeling something solid in his grasp. When he pulled his hand back, he was holding a small silver box with golden lines tracing across its surface, making it look mysterious and intricate.
As he examined it, details of the item filled his mind: The Eternal Cigarette Case.
The function of this item was simple. It could store objects, and once an item was used, it would automatically reappear in the case after twenty-four hours. Meaning, if he put cigarettes in the case, he'd have an endless supply.
But then something dawned on him. This case seemed just the right size for his cards…
Curious, he held a card between his fingers, opened the cigarette case, and slipped the card inside. It fit perfectly.
"Well, well…" Mike muttered, slightly taken aback.
Not only could the case hold his cards, but he could also summon them mentally, allowing them to appear in his hand at will. He tested it by retrieving a card and letting it dissipate. Then, he thought of the case, and it vanished, stowing itself away in his mind. Now, he only needed to wait twenty-four hours to see if the card would regenerate. If it did, this item would be invaluable.
Rubbing his forehead in satisfaction, Mike settled in and began creating new skill cards. He'd nearly run out of his current supply, which left him feeling unprepared.
"Better set a small goal…" he whispered to himself, smiling as he got back to work.
