"Ding!"
"Combat detected, drop reward: 2 points."
"Ding!"
"Combat detected, drop reward: Super Speed (loco)."
Jonny Blaze opened his eyes in surprise at the sudden and unpredictable drop reward and shouted to halt Queen Maeve, who was walking away.
Queen Maeve stopped and looked back, puzzled, only to see Jonny Blaze staring playful expre turned her heau he window with a Curiously, she follow his gaze.
Blaze staring out the window with a playful expression. Curiously, she turned her head to follow his gaze.
What she saw left her stunned.
On the curb in front of an electronics store, a man stood in shock, his face covered in flesh and blood, holding two severed arms outstretched in his hands.
In front of him, the ground was littered with gore.
Not far away, a man in a blue uniform, also covered in blood, tried to explain frantically.
"I couldn't stop, I couldn't stop-" he repeated in a panic, putting on his blood-stained sunglasses and running off at lightning speed.
In the blink of an eye, the man disappeared.
"Damn it! It's the Loco. My God, what has that guy done?" Queen Maeve cursed under her breath, finally realizing what had happened.
Jonny Blaze glanced over at Huey, who had just started screaming his girlfriend's name. He gestured for Queen Maeve to drive away.
The Loco's power was Super Speed, similar to The Flash or Quicksilver.
The scene they had just witnessed was one of the most infamous moments and also the catalyst for Huey, an ordinary man, joining the Black-Robed Picket team to fight against the Seven and Vought.
Huey had been a huge fan of the Loco, but that same Loco had just obliterated his girlfriend. Ironic, to say the least.
Picking up the Super Speed of the Loco was indeed a pleasant surprise for Jonny Blaze. After all, it was a powerful and practical ability, but his interest wasn't particularly high.
It wasn't that he was indifferent to the tragedy, but more that he'd come to accept: "Everything is fate, and no one can change it."
If you wanted to break free of fate's chains and master your own destiny, you had to have strength that surpassed everything.
The next morning.
The sky was gloomy, casting a dark blue hue over everything.
Jonny Blaze pushed his Super Speed to the limit, running as fast as he pleased. His unmatched speed and the smooth rhythm of his strides brought an indescribable sense of comfort.
Running releases dopamine-a neurotransmitter that influences emotions and feelings, transmitting excitement and happiness.
Dopamine is also tied to addictive behaviors, which is why some say running is addictive.
For Jonny Blaze, Super Speed had another perk: it made farming drop rewards from spectator battles quick and efficient.
Although it was still early, and most of the lowlifes who spent their days robbing, extorting, and causing trouble hadn't yet started their daily grind, Jonny still managed to rack up quite a bit along his run.
Unfortunately, he hadn't gained any new abilities, but he was content with the nearly 100 points he had earned.
Points could be used to upgrade his combat detection range. The larger the range, the more chances to earn drop rewards and increase his control over the situation.
It had cost 100 points to increase his detection range from 100 meters to 200 meters. If his guess was right, the next upgrade would require 200 points.
"Duang-"
The sound of something heavy hitting the ground caught Jonny's attention.
Across the street, in a yard, the front of a car had just hit the ground, trembling slightly before being lifted again-this time slowly but forcefully-by a girl in a ponytail and a hoodie.
"Is that... Starlight?" Jonny Blaze's eyes flashed with recognition.
Starlight's abilities allowed her to release blinding light, absorb energy, and manipulate electricity, along with a defense and strength far beyond that of ordinary people.
At this point, she hadn't yet replaced Lamplighter as a new member of the Seven. She hadn't seen the real darkness hiding behind the bright façade of the world she admired.
With justice in her heart and idolizing the Seven, she would soon be deceived and abused by the Deep just for a chance to join the group, discovering the ugly reality behind her dream.
She would later meet Huey, who was also disillusioned, and the two, sharing similar wounds, would quickly come together as a couple.
Starlight paid a heavy price for trusting the Deep, but despite her anger and sadness, she silently accepted her reality.
Meanwhile, Huey, still grieving his girlfriend's death, would join the Black-Robed Picket team to take revenge on the Seven. Ironically, he would soon find himself drawn to Starlight, a new member of the very group he wanted to destroy.
As the only two relatively normal characters in this dark world, Starlight and Huey's relationship was all too realistic.
In the real world, there isn't much purity and idealism; everything comes down to weighing the pros and cons and whether the stakes are worth it.
"Duang-"
Starlight noticed Jonny Blaze watching her and put down the car, walking toward him.
"Hi, is there something I can help you with?"
Jonny raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Thanks for the gift."
"The gift I gave you?" Starlight looked confused. "I think you've got the wrong person. I don't know you, and I've never given you anything."
"You gave me a gift the moment your heart beat," Jonny said, smiling as he held out his hand. Starlight blushed slightly and extended hers.
"Annie January. You can call me Starlight."
"Jonny Blaze."
"You mentioned I gave you a gift. What about you-do you have a gift for me?" Starlight asked with a smile, her first impression of this charming, humorous guy was a good one.
"I do. But that depends on your performance," Jonny said, grinning as he opened his arms. "Want a gift? Hug me!"
Starlight laughed. "Do you say that to every girl?"
"I love everything in this world, no favorites, no exceptions."
As Jonny took a step closer, Starlight raised a hand and stepped back with a grin. "Alright, I'll admit you're funny and charming, but I'm not the kind of girl you can win over that easily."
"What if the gift is getting you into the Seven?" Jonny's tone shifted, becoming more serious.
The smile faded from Starlight's face as she frowned slightly. "Are you serious?"
"This is the second most serious thing I've ever said to you."
"And what was the first?"
