Chapitre 11: Chapter 11: Arrival at the Unknown Island

The sea had been eerily calm for the past few hours, the only sound the soft creaking of their boat as it drifted through the water. Kaden stood at the helm, his eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of land. It felt like they had been sailing for days without any real direction, and the tension was beginning to wear on him.

"See anything yet?" Kaden asked, his voice cutting through the silence.

Geralt, standing near the bow, didn't answer immediately. His sharp eyes remained focused on the distance, where a dark shape was beginning to rise from the horizon. After a moment, he nodded. "Land ahead."

Kaden let out a small sigh of relief. They had been drifting for what felt like an eternity, with no idea where they were or what lay ahead. Any land was better than endless sea.

As they drew closer, the shape of the island became clearer—tall, jagged structures rising into the sky, shrouded in a haze of smoke and mist. It wasn't the lush, tropical paradise Kaden had hoped for. Instead, the island looked cold and industrial, with a skyline dominated by smokestacks and crumbling buildings.

"Doesn't look like much," Kaden muttered, adjusting their course toward the island.

"It's land," Geralt replied, his voice even. "And we need it."

Kaden nodded. They had been running low on supplies for days, and their boat wasn't going to hold up much longer. Whatever this island was, it was their only option for now.

They approached the island cautiously, pulling their small boat into a narrow, run-down harbor. The docks were old and weathered, with creaky wooden planks that groaned under the weight of their steps. Around them, the air was thick with the smell of smoke and oil, and the distant sounds of machinery echoed through the mist.

Kaden glanced around, his brow furrowing. "Where are we?"

Geralt shook his head. "No idea. Doesn't look welcoming."

They stepped onto the docks, the feeling of solid ground beneath their feet both strange and comforting after so much time at sea. The dock was nearly deserted, save for a few shady figures moving in the shadows, keeping to themselves.

"We should find out where we are," Kaden said, keeping his voice low as they walked. "And see if we can get supplies."

As they moved deeper into the harbor, the island's true nature became more apparent. The buildings were tall and imposing, made of iron and stone, and the streets were narrow and winding. It wasn't a bustling city—far from it. The place felt like it was falling apart, as though it had been abandoned and left to decay.

The few people they passed gave them wary looks, their eyes darting toward Kaden and Geralt before quickly turning away. It was clear they weren't welcome here, but no one seemed bold enough to confront them directly.

"This place feels... wrong," Kaden muttered.

Geralt nodded in agreement, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "Stay alert. We don't know what we've walked into."

They reached the edge of what looked like a marketplace—a cluster of run-down stalls and shacks where merchants sold all manner of strange, questionable goods. The people here were rough-looking, their faces hardened by whatever life they had been living on this island. There was an undercurrent of danger in the air, the kind that came from years of surviving in a place like this.

"Let's ask around," Kaden said, stepping toward one of the stalls.

The merchant behind the stall was a grizzled old man with a scraggly beard and a missing tooth. He gave Kaden a long, suspicious look as they approached.

"What do you want?" the merchant grumbled, his voice rough.

"We're new here," Kaden said, keeping his tone friendly but cautious. "We don't know what this place is. What's the name of this island?"

The merchant's eyes narrowed, and he let out a short, humorless laugh. "You're telling me you don't know where you are? You must be more lost than you look."

Kaden glanced at Geralt, then back at the merchant. "We've been out at sea for a while. Got caught in some bad waters and ended up here by accident."

"Spider Miles," the merchant said, spitting on the ground. "That's what this place is called. Industrial wasteland, home to crooks, criminals, and anyone who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty."

Kaden frowned. "Spider Miles... doesn't sound like the kind of place that welcomes visitors."

"It doesn't," the merchant replied bluntly. "You're lucky I'm even talking to you. Most folks around here would rather stab you in the back than give you directions."

Geralt stepped forward, his voice low and commanding. "We're not looking for trouble. Just supplies and information."

The merchant eyed Geralt's sword warily, then nodded. "Supplies, I can help you with. Information... that'll cost extra."

Kaden glanced at the merchant's stall. "What do you know about this island?"

The merchant chuckled darkly. "More than I care to. This place used to be an industrial hub—factories, workshops, shipyards. But that was a long time ago. Now it's just a dumping ground for scum and people trying to make a quick buck. If you're looking for anything illegal, this is the place to find it."

"Illegal?" Kaden asked, raising an eyebrow.

The merchant smirked. "Weapons, stolen goods, black market treasures... you name it, Spider Miles has it. But you didn't hear that from me."

Kaden and Geralt exchanged a glance. This wasn't the kind of place they wanted to stay for long, but they didn't have much choice. They needed supplies and information, and it seemed Spider Miles was the only place where they could find both.

"Where can we get maps and navigation tools?" Kaden asked.

The merchant scratched his beard. "There's a guy on the other side of town. Deals in maps, log poses, and the like. Be careful with him, though—he's not the most trustworthy sort. Name's Barto."

"Thanks for the tip," Kaden said, tossing a small coin onto the stall.

The merchant caught it with a grin. "Good luck, strangers. You'll need it around here."

They moved away from the marketplace, heading deeper into the city. The buildings became more run-down the further they went, and the streets were filled with more shady characters. Kaden could feel eyes on them as they walked—watching, waiting.

"Spider Miles, huh?" Kaden muttered. "Doesn't seem like the friendliest place."

"It's not," Geralt replied, his voice low. "But it's exactly the kind of place we can find what we need. Just stay sharp."

They continued through the twisting streets, the sounds of machinery and distant shouting echoing around them. The island was like nothing Kaden had ever seen—cold, industrial, and filled with danger at every corner. But it was also a place where they could find information. And right now, information was exactly what they needed.

As they rounded a corner, a group of rough-looking thugs appeared ahead, blocking their path. Kaden tensed, his hand moving to the hilt of his sword. The lead thug, a bulky man with a scar across his face, sneered as he looked Kaden and Geralt up and down.

"Well, well," the thug said, his voice dripping with arrogance. "Looks like we've got some fresh meat. You boys lost?"

Kaden sighed. "We're not looking for trouble."

The thug laughed, stepping closer. "You don't have to look for it. Trouble finds you here."

Geralt's hand tightened on his sword. "Last chance. Move, or we make you move."

The thug's grin widened. "Oh, I like this one. Let's see if you can back up that talk."

Kaden exchanged a quick glance with Geralt, then drew his sword. It looked like Spider Miles wasn't going to let them pass without a fight.
