Onix (Sunburst Island Variant)
Type: Steel, Ice
Category: Rock Snake Pokémon
Ability: Water Storage
Hidden Ability: Dry Skin
Dry Skin: Pokémon with this ability are immune to Water-type moves.
When hit by a Water-type move, the Pokémon recovers one-fourth of its maximum HP.
In rainy weather, it restores one-eighth of its maximum HP per turn. However, it takes 1.25x damage from Fire-type moves.
Strength: Silver level
"Is this... a Regional Variant?" Ash muttered, his eyes narrowing as he examined the system's data. The information confirmed it—this Onix was unlike any he had seen before.
The unique qualities of the Crystal Onix were undeniable. Unlike the typical Onix, it wasn't weak to Water-type moves, rendering it almost impervious to common counters.
Grass and Ice-type moves were also ineffective against it.
However, its weaknesses were equally significant. With Steel and Ice typing, it was highly vulnerable to Fighting and Fire-type attacks. Moreover, its Dry Skin ability made it even more susceptible to Fire moves.
Despite these drawbacks, Ash recognized its potential. "This Pokémon could be a game-changer in battle," he thought.
"This... this is the Crystal Onix that my grandfather saw, isn't it?!" Ali gasped, his voice trembling with excitement. His wide eyes reflected his awe.
"It's so beautiful," Misty murmured, unable to look away. The Onix's crystalline body refracted light in every direction, creating a stunning rainbow glow in the dim cave.
Tracey, however, was too engrossed to speak. He hastily pulled out his sketchpad, determined to document every detail. Being the first to observe and record the Crystal Onix would make him famous.
"I have to capture it!" Mateo finally declared, snapping out of his daze. He grabbed a Poké Ball, his hands shaking slightly. "Go, Cloyster!"
Ali released his Pokémon—a Cloyster he had trained specifically for moments like this.
Cloyster
Type: Water, Ice
Category: Bivalve Pokémon
Ability: Shell Armor or Skill Link
Hidden Ability: Overcoat
Shell Armor: Prevents critical hits.
Strength: Silver level
"Cloyster, use, Water Gun!" Mateo commanded, his voice filled with determination.
Cloyster obeyed, gathering Water-type energy. A powerful stream of water shot from its shell, heading straight for the Crystal Onix.
But Onix didn't flinch. The Water Gun struck its crystalline body without leaving so much as a scratch.
"What?!" Mateo was stunned, his confidence wavering.
"This isn't an ordinary Onix," Ash explained, his tone calm yet firm. "It's a Regional Variant, like Alola's Raticate or Galar's Weezing. You can't approach it with conventional strategies."
Mateo's face contorted with confusion. As a glass craftsman, he wasn't familiar with the intricacies of Pokémon Regional Variants.
Before Mateo could process Ash's words, Onix made its move. Steel-type energy surged through its tail, which glowed with a metallic sheen. With a deafening roar, the Crystal Onix lashed out with Iron Tail.
The attack hit Cloyster head-on, sending it crashing into the cave wall with a sickening thud. Cloyster slumped into the crater it created, fainted.
"Unbelievable," Misty whispered. "It defeated Cloyster with one hit."
"Onixxx!" Onix roared, its piercing eyes turning toward the group. Its anger was palpable. These intruders had attacked without provocation—it wouldn't forgive them.
Mateo clenched his teeth, recalling Cloyster into its Poké Ball. He reached for his second—and last—Poké Ball. "Charmeleon, it's up to you!"
He released his second Pokémon. Charmeleon stood ready, flames flickering at the tip of its tail.
Charmeleon
Type: Fire
Category: Flame Pokémon
Strength: Silver level
"Charmeleon?" Misty blinked in surprise. "That's not the best choice against an Rock-type Pokémon."
Tracey nodded in agreement. "It's going to be an uphill battle for sure."
But Ash disagreed. "No, Charmeleon's the perfect counter for this Onix," he said, his voice steady with conviction.
Onix seemed to hesitate as it locked eyes with Charmeleon. The hesitation was subtle, but it didn't escape Tracey's sharp gaze.
"Is it... afraid of Charmeleon?" Tracey murmured, noting how Onix's movements caused ripples in the lake.
"Haven't you figured it out yet?" Ash asked, glancing at Tracey. "Cloyster shouldn't have been defeated so easily, even if it was at a disadvantage."
"That's true," Tracey realized, his eyes widening. "That Iron Tail wasn't normal—it got a Same-Type Attack Bonus."
"Exactly," Ash said. "This Onix has Steel typing."
"Steel typing?" Misty exclaimed, stunned. "Then that means Fire moves will be super effective against it!"
Mateo's confidence surged at this revelation. "Charmeleon, use Flamethrower!"
Charmeleon opened its jaws, releasing a powerful stream of flames. The cave lit up as the fire roared toward Onix, illuminating the Pokémon's crystalline body and revealing a flicker of fear in its eyes.
Ash watched closely, his suspicions confirmed. "This Onix really is a unique Regional Variant," he thought, already analyzing its potential for future battles.
