Seeing Ash's success gave Gary both pressure and excitement. He, too, wanted to accomplish the same feat—to prove to Ash that he was just as strong.
After Ash's victory, a reporter waited at the entrance, hoping for an interview.
"Hello, Ash! Could I have a few words?" The reporter smiled as Ash approached, and Pikachu, perched on his shoulder, looked at the camera with wide, curious eyes. The sight melted the hearts of many in the audience, especially the young girls.
The reporter, smiling warmly, started, "Ash, according to your profile, you've only been a Trainer for a year, right?"
Ash nodded. "Yes, that's right."
Viewers were intrigued by this; while impressive, Ash's short time as a Trainer didn't yet make him legendary.
Then the reporter brought up something unexpected. "Your Trainer level isn't the official ranking, but Poké Ball level. Can you tell us more about that?"
Ash nodded again. "Actually, it's no big deal. I just happened to ruin one of Team Rocket's schemes." His casual tone startled the audience, as Team Rocket's infamy as a criminal organization was widely known.
"Ruin…Team Rocket's plan?" The reporter was stunned. A Rookie Trainer who could thwart Team Rocket? It was clearly no accident.
"And finally, what's your goal for the Indigo Plateau Conference?" she asked, eager for a strong finish.
"My goal? Only one: to win!" Ash replied with firm resolve. He wasn't worried about arrogance—he was here to compete, and winning was his only aim.
"Thank you, Ash. We'll look forward to seeing more from you," she finished, waving as he turned toward the passageway.
On the other side, Gary watched Ash's interview intently, his gaze hardening. Determined not to let Ash steal all the attention, he resolved to prove his strength as well.
When his turn came, Gary strode out confidently, releasing his Arcanine. In the challenging terrain of the Rock Field, Gary's Arcanine dominated, darting through with Extreme Speed and securing Gary's own one-on-three victory with flair. Afterward, Gary also faced the media.
"Gary, with so many strong trainers here, do you have any rivals you're focused on?" the reporter asked.
"Only one," Gary replied firmly, "and that's Ash." His response surprised the reporter and even more so the audience, many of whom didn't yet know who Ash was.
Realizing the potential story, the media quickly gathered information on the two young Trainers. As the camera panned back, the reporter shared her findings.
"Our research shows that Gary is Professor Oak's grandson, while Ash, also from Pallet Town, was another of Professor Oak's students.
The two registered as Trainers on the same day, and both achieved one-on-three victories in the first round. It's clear that they're fierce rivals!"
The audience buzzed with excitement. Online forums filled with debates over who was stronger, and fans worldwide began to speculate about a showdown between the two.
In the post-match review, footage of Ash and Gary's battles was replayed, and their rivalry became the talk of the tournament.
Fans from across regions took note, including a young girl in the Kalos Region. As she watched Ash's profile picture flash across the screen, her eyes sparkled with excitement.
