Finally, I reached the safety of my small apartment, locking the door behind me. Breathless, I collapsed onto the couch, the folder still clutched in my hand. As I opened it, a newspaper clipping slipped out. "Prominent Scientists Vanish: Sophia and James Blackwood's Disappearance Remains a Mystery." Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes.
I spent the next few hours pouring over the research, my mind reeling with the implications. The Eclipse Project had the potential to revolutionize energy production, but at what cost? As night fell, exhaustion claimed me. I drifted off to sleep, the folder still open beside me. But my rest was short-lived. A knock at the door jolted me awake. My heart racing, I cautiously approached the peephole.
Dr. Rachel Lee stood outside, her expression worried. "Ethan, I've been trying to reach you. What's going on?" I hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. But something in her eyes told me I could trust her.
"Come in," I said, opening the door. Rachel's gaze swept the room, taking in the scattered papers and notes. "What have you found?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
