Chapitre 14: Second Step [3]

With the sun sitting comfortably in the sky, the spars continued. And during these spars, I got to see a lot of interesting things.

A green-haired archer whose nimble feet allowed him to dance around the battlefield, almost toying with the woman named Fatima whose axes never reached him. At least not before her body looked more similar to a porcupine with all the arrows sticking out of it. Luckily for her, Jacob hadn't been allowed to aim at any of her vital spots, and, from the looks of it, the arrows were modified to minimize damage.

Our class appeared to have a pretty diverse cast of people in terms of which classes they had awakened. Swordsmen, axe-wielders, an archer, and different kinds of mages from the earth-conjuring Samuel to a girl able to create and manipulate water as she wished.

Of course, we also had Ken who used a Bō, as well as other classmates who all fought using pretty unique techniques. But...

'They are all doing some cool stuff... but it's still so slow...'

It couldn't be helped. No matter how much I forced myself to indulge in the scenery in front of me, I just couldn't find it particularly exciting, even more so as most spars included a ranged fighter or mage and a melee combatant. And that specific dynamic wasn't fun to look at, though I was a bit intrigued to try it myself.

I could imagine that if I found myself fighting someone who wanted to keep a distance away from me, it could be very exciting to find ways to close the distance and find the opportunity to launch a strong attack that could limit their mobility.

'A liver punch... no, maybe it would be better to simply go for the K.O? Maybe try to find an opening by using jabs, and then if their defense crumbles I could go for a one-two combo into a left hook...'

At least their spars allowed me to learn a lot, as I could not only see the different ways they thought, but I could also begin to theorize their possible weaknesses. Sadly, that only mattered if I was strong enough to stand a chance to begin with.

"Good fight. Take a rest."

Soon enough we had come down to only four combatants remaining, four people who hadn't gotten the chance to spar yet. In reality, the spars had all been very short, as our teacher had made sure to stop them as soon as he saw the risk of someone getting seriously hurt or even losing their life.

So it made a lot of sense that you needed to get permission from a teacher if you wanted to spar.

Which did make me wonder if that was truly all there was to it. Because Wyll had certainly not hesitated while trying to punch me in the assembly hall. Granted he was pretty riled up, so it could have been him simply having a bad temper, but he also didn't appear to be scared of any consequences.

"Celine Phish and Rose Solder, come forward!"

Snapping me out of my thoughts, Mr. Folm called for two of my classmates who would be going up against each other in a spar. Although it was a stretch to say that I knew Celine, I at least knew of her. Rose, on the other hand, wasn't someone I had paid any particular attention to.

Just like Cerus, Celine had also picked a longsword from the weapon rack while Rose on the other hand held a wooden staff in her hands, looking more like a cane rather than a weapon of war.

'Guess she is also some kind of mage. But... I like that look in her eyes.'

Even a girl like Rose who looked to be everything but intimidating could still be a powerhouse in this world, and that did intrigue. One of the most important parts of seeing all the fights was the fact that they were quite a big help in getting rid of my earlier preconceptions about who was strong and who was weak.

A woman in this world didn't seem to have an inherent disadvantage when it came to their physical strength, and they also didn't appear to have grown up in environments that dissuaded them from fighting.

That meant that I had no idea what to expect from the two women who had now found their positions, with Celine holding her sword readied in front of her and Rose Grasping her staff tightly.

Now all that was left was to wait for Mr. Folm to start the fight, which he spared no time in doing.

"Are you two ready?"

"Yes, sir."

"Mm..."

His arm was yet again raised to the skies only to fall down, signaling the start of the spar.

"Alright, then... fight!"

"Hupp!"

As soon as our teacher had finished, Celine dashed forward, her face devoid of hesitation. And I kind of liked her approach.

Even if it could be said to be reckless as she didn't know what Rose was capable of, she made a bet thinking that coming close would be the key to winning the fight.

Celine was also really fast compared to our other classmates, with the exception of Jacob, and it took less than a second for her to reach Rose. As a result, Rose appeared to have some trouble figuring out how she should deal with the sudden charge coming at her. Or at least that's how it must've looked to us who spectated the fight. In reality, however, this was not the case.

Rose already had a plan, a plan that she was more than ready to act upon at a second's notice. Raising her staff into the air, just as Celine was about to swing her sword, Rose opened her mouth, instantly putting an end to the fight with a slightly smug look on her face.

"I surrender."

"Haaaaah?!"

Celine's face said it all, summarizing everyone's feelings on Rose's actions, her mouth opening enough to swallow a melon in disbelief. There hadn't been anyone who saw this coming, including me.

'What the fuck... She just gave up?! Without even trying?!'

Just as my blood was starting to heat up in frustration at what I had just witnessed, a somewhat soft male voice echoed out from another spectator. It was Jacob, who was currently standing next to Cerus, seemingly a bit embarrassed as he scratched the back of his head.

"Man... I knew she would do this..."

"What do you mean? Has she done this before?"

It wasn't just me who was listening to Cerus' and Jacob's conversation, everyone in the class was eager to hear what Jacob had to say about the pink-haired girl, wanting to get an explanation that could settle our roaring emotions.

"Well, it's not necessarily that she does this often... It would be more accurate to say that she isn't particularly suited for sparring. You see, Rose... is a healer."

Instantly, Cerus' face changed, visibly showing that he understood the situation.

"Ah, a healer you say? Then it makes sense that she isn't suited for fighting."

"...I'm right here, you know?"

Neither of the two had noticed that both Celine and Rose had already returned from their match, with Rose now staring daggers at her gossiping green-haired friend. A friend who was now desperate to smooth things over.

"Ah, Rose! Good... fight? I mean, you did your... best?"

"...Jacob."

"...sorry."

Still, Rose didn't seem to be all too upset, she honestly seemed mostly annoyed at Jacob's verbal clumsiness more than embarrassed that she had surrendered.

There were two people, however, that was quite upset, one of which was now taking out her frustrations on Cerus.

"Damn it! I didn't even get to fight! This is unfair, I also wanted to show what I am capable of!"

"Yes, yes. But you will get more chances in the future, maybe even today. It's not like it's time for lunch yet, so maybe you could ask the teacher for another spar?"

"But I wanted to spar now! Damn it!"

The brown-haired childish beauty was rightfully upset, and I completely understood her feelings. Which in turn brings us to the other person who was upset.

Me.

'Who the fuck cares if you are a healer?! Then don't start the spar in the first place! Shit!'

It took the might of a hundred men not to scream out loud in frustration, and the might of a thousand not to stomp the ground in anger. To me this was equal to someone putting out a large bowl of delicious food on the table, only to take it away as soon as I went for a bite.

Unfortunately, or maybe it was fortunate, Mr. Folm didn't care about my inner turmoil as he simply just continued with the lecture.

"Next up is Cerus and Evan! Step forward!"

It was finally time. It was time for the champion to step forward, to once again defend the belt hanging on his shoulder. The challenger was Evan, a man with long, black hair who was holding a spear in his hands.

'He looks strong...'

Evan was one of the students that I had eyed every now and then, as he looked like everything but a pushover to me. His build was similar to Cerus, albeit a bit smaller when it came to the size of his shoulders and arms.

As both of them took off the black uniform jackets and rolled up the white sleeves of their dress shirts, I had a feeling that this fight would be everything but boring to me.
