Chapitre 45: Chapter 45: Loot

The girl who screamed earlier was now pushing her way through the crowd until she was stopped by the man referred to as Uncle Quentin.

Impatiently, she said to Quentin, "Let's hurry up and leave. It's raining so heavily, and my clothes are all soaked. Hey, you're the one who crashed into us, so we're not paying for this bike."

The latter part was directed at Logan. The girl appeared to be around Logan's age, with flawless pale skin. Although she had attractive features, her current expression of annoyance spoiled her beauty.

Logan waved his hand and said apologetically, "No, no. It's my fault; I shouldn't have been riding so fast. If this gentleman is hurt, I can go home and get some money to cover medical expenses."

After eight years of struggling to survive in the post-apocalyptic world, Logan prided himself on his acting skills, perfectly playing the role of an ordinary young man.

The middle-aged man called Uncle Qiu gave Logan a long, hard look before pulling the girl behind him and stepping aside to clear the way. He said to Logan, "Ride slower next time; going that fast isn't safe."

The others also stepped aside, making way. Logan grinned, a simple and innocent smile, and replied, "Got it, thanks, Uncle."

He then hopped on his bike and rode past the group. It wasn't until he had ridden several hundred meters and turned a corner that the prickling feeling of being watched finally disappeared.

Only then did Logan realize that cold sweat had formed on his back. Those people had given him a dangerous feeling, especially the middle-aged man, who had exerted the most pressure on him.

Had there been a conflict earlier, even with his space abilities to catch them off guard, he wasn't sure he could have won. Fortunately, the situation passed without incident.

Logan didn't care who those people were or what they were planning. He was only out to scavenge for supplies and had no desire to get involved in unnecessary trouble.

After the earlier encounter, Logan slowed down a bit. Once he reached the main road, he saw that the streets were lined with derelict vehicles. Unlike in his previous life, where cars had crashed into each other in massive pileups, these vehicles were neatly parked along the roadside.

There were a few people on the streets, some hurrying along, others carrying bulging bags, returning from their own scavenging trips. The entire city was now without power and cut off from any outside information. Some people were already aware of the need to stock up on supplies, while others clung to the hope that the power outage was just a local issue and would soon be fixed.

But when people finally realized that the electricity would never come back, that their everyday electronics would no longer function, and that the worsening conditions would lead to unreported deaths, they would understand that this city had become a place where anything goes.

By then, those who were still buying supplies would likely resort to looting. Logan intended to loot ahead of them. While most people would flock to supermarkets, his target was the shipping containers at the port.

An hour later, Logan arrived at the southern port of South City. The port was filled with countless shipping containers, cranes, and neatly docked cargo ships. There were even more ships than Logan had anticipated. If the authorities had ordered cars to stop running, they might have also told the ships to dock temporarily. Maybe that post he had shared wasn't in vain after all and had made a difference.

After surveying the area to ensure no one was watching, Logan stored his bicycle in his space. Normally, this port would have a lot of staff, but after the solar flare, operations had ceased, and many workers fled home in fear. Even if there were still guards, there wouldn't be many.

With the security cameras now disabled, as long as Logan was careful, he was unlikely to be discovered. The only sound at the port was the rain falling on the containers.

Logan approached one of the containers and placed his hand on it. With a thought, the contents inside were transferred to his space. From the outside, the container remained intact, but it was now empty. Only Logan could carry out such a seamless theft.

The first container he emptied contained watermelons—a promising start. A faint smile appeared on Logan's face. The fruits of South City were known for their ample sunshine and sweetness, and this container of watermelons would last him a long time.

He moved on to the next container, which also contained fruit, this time coconuts. After clearing out six containers of fruit, Logan headed toward a different section. Unfortunately, the next three containers were empty. He soon noticed a pattern: the containers with locks generally had goods inside, while the unlocked ones were empty. The containers with goods were also stored separately from the empty ones.

With this in mind, Logan bypassed the unlocked containers and made his way to another stack. This time, he acquired a container full of clothes, though they were all short-sleeved. After storing one container of clothes, Logan decided not to take any more.

He suddenly remembered that South City had a year-round summer climate, meaning that most residents' wardrobes were likely full of summer clothes, with only a few spring or autumn items. When the extreme cold arrived, who knew how many locals would freeze to death? Perhaps even more than in Harbor City.

Logan continued, collecting three containers of snacks, four of frozen seafood, and two of household items. In one container, he discovered several imported cars, each worth hundreds of thousands or even millions. The metal containers had provided some protection from the electromagnetic pulse, so these cars might still be functional, or they might not. Either way, Logan had plenty of space, so he took them all.

He found all sorts of items: electronics, crafts, household goods, food, and industrial supplies. With nearly ten thousand containers at the port, Logan felt like he was opening mystery boxes as he moved from one to the next, storing the contents in his space.

However, it wasn't long before an unwelcome group arrived at the southern port.

"Kane, are you sure we won't get into trouble for this?"

Five young men, around twenty-five or twenty-six years old, swaggered toward the port. The speaker, a bald-headed young man, looked around nervously as if afraid of being caught.

Kane smacked the bald man's head hard, looking annoyed. "What's there to be afraid of? Didn't I tell you? The whole city's power is out, so the security cameras are down too. There are so many containers here; we can empty one without anyone noticing!"

It turned out that these guys also landed their eyes on the containers!
