Lucy's smile faltered for a brief moment. But she quickly forced it back, not wanting her daughter to notice the slight change in her expression.
"That's a wonderful drawing, baby," she managed to say.
She took a deep breath, telling herself to calm down. Lucy focused on her daughter, whose eyes sparkled and oblivious to the truth.
"My sweetheart is such a talented artist. Maybe someday, you'll draw something for mommy to hang on my bedroom wall."
The little girl liked her idea. "I'll draw one tomorrow! But… mommy,"
Lucy watched as her daughter's smile turned downward. "What's wrong, baby?"
"Can we go to the park tomorrow?" the little girl looked at her with an expectant look.
What Lucy wouldn't do to give whatever her daughter wanted. But Lucy had to swallow hard as she replied, "Mommy won't be home for a bit, baby. Wait till I come back and I'll take you to wherever you want."
"But I want you here now."
